INFORMATION SHEET:

INPUT DEVICES
1. What are Input Devices?
Input devices are hardware components used to enter data and instructions into a computer
system. They allow users to interact with the computer by providing information that is
processed by the system.
2. Functions of Input Devices
 Accept data from the external environment.
 Convert data into computer-readable form.
 Transfer data to the Central Processing Unit (CPU) for processing.
3. Classification of Input Devices
Input devices can be classified into two main categories:
A. Standard Input Devices
1. Keyboard
 The most commonly used input device.
 Resembles a typewriter and is used to enter data into the computer.
 Contains alphabetic, numeric, function, and special keys.
 Types:
 General-purpose keyboard (101 keys, used in personal computers).
 Special-purpose keyboard (used in ATMs, POS systems, etc.).
2. Pointing Devices
 Devices used to control the movement of the pointer on the screen.
 Examples:
 Mouse: A small hand-held device used for navigation and selection.
 Functions: Point, Click, Double Click, Drag.
 Types: Mechanical, Optical, Wireless.
 Trackball: Similar to a mouse but with a rolling ball.
 Joystick: Used mainly for gaming and simulations.
 Light Pen: A pen-like device used to draw or interact directly on the
screen.
 Touch Screen: Allows users to interact directly by touching the display.
B. Special Input Devices
1. Microphone
 Captures audio and converts it into digital signals.
 Used in voice recognition systems and communication applications.
2. Scanner
 Converts physical documents into digital formats.
 Types: Flatbed scanner, Handheld scanner, Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
scanner.
3. Camera
 Captures images and videos for input into the computer.
 Used in video conferencing, photography, and security systems.
4. Summary
 Input devices facilitate data entry into a computer system.
 Standard input devices include keyboards, mice, and touchscreens.
 Special input devices include microphones, scanners, and cameras.
 Understanding input devices helps in effective computer usage and interaction.
