G Reading: Referencing
Six sentences are missing from this text. Choose the correct sentence for each gap. There are

Our food and our planet
More and more people are realizing that we need to change the way we live
because the Earth cannot support it. For example, the distance food travels
before it reaches our plates matters because it contributes to global warming.
Imported food usually starts the trip on a boat or a plane. 1 From there, it
often travels to our kitchens by car. This, of course, means using even more
fuel.
Distance does not tell the whole story, however. We also have to consider
methods of transport. 2 For example, airplanes damage the environment
50 times more than ships. Therefore, bananas transported from Colombia
over the ocean have much less of an impact than avocados flown in from
Mexico.
This is why some recommend buying food that is grown nearby. They say that
buying local food is often a much better use of resources. 3 The fresher the
product, the better the quality and in many cases the more environmentally
friendly it is.
However, depending on where you are, things may be a little more
complicated than that. 4 For example, to grow non-native fruit and
vegetables in northern Europe, farmers use greenhouses. These require lights
and heating because there is not enough sun to grow those plants. This
means that food grown further away can sometimes have less impact.
Until now, many customers have not been aware of the environmental impact
of their food because food labels have not given this information. 5 This
may change, as brands have started including more details.
In the meantime, however, scientists at the United Nations have identified
another problem. According to a report they published, we should all reduce
the amount of meat in our diets. 6 Growing food to feed animals to feed
people uses more resources than growing food to feed people.
It is clear that our food system is slowly destroying the planet. This is a
problem we must try to solve immediately.
A Sometimes production methods may affect the environment more than distance.
B This kind of food is tastier because it spends less time travelling.
C This does not cause any serious problems for our health.
D This is because intensive animal farming is also contributing to climate change.
E Then it continues to our supermarkets by lorry or by train.
F These usually say where a product comes from, but that is all.
G In many countries, these vehicles are banned.
H Some of these have a greater impact than others.

J Writing: Expanding main points
Six sentences are missing from this email. Choose the correct sentence for each gap. There

From: Yasemin
To: Aisha
Subject: My news
Hi Aisha,
Great to get your email – glad you had a lovely holiday! I’ve been so busy over the last few
weeks with my studies. 1 I hope I finish it on time – it’s taken me ages to write.
So, what else have I been doing? Well, learning to cook lots of new recipes. I got some great
vegetarian recipes online, and my cousin gave me a cookbook. I’ve been practising them. A lot.
Yes, that’s right, I’ve decided to become a vegetarian. 2 I’m really glad I have. Although
everything I eat now is plant-based, it’s not actually that difficult. I thought it might be a bit more
limited, but there are lots of delicious things you can do with vegetables, when you get it right!
The last thing I made was a tomato and mushroom loaf. It was meant to be really easy. I mixed
all the ingredients, and kept checking it while it was baking to make sure it didn’t burn. But when
I took it out it looked terrible and tasted worse! 3 So, that might be where I went wrong!
I think that the biggest problem for me is that I just don’t like following recipes! 4 Mum says
that when I opened the oven door it changed the temperature, and that’s why it didn’t work.
I’ve got a lot to learn!!!
Actually, I’ve got a suggestion, do you fancy coming with me to my local vegetarian cafe on
Friday? They have a cookery class that looks really interesting. I’ve read about it on their
website. It would be great if I had someone to go with. The classes are really good value for
money. 5 It’s always good to save a bit of cash. Oh, and you get half-price cake and coffee
after the class.
Anyway, let me know what you think about my idea. I’ve asked Beth and Jenny if they want to
come, too. You know how much they love trying out new things! Even if we don’t make anything
nice, at least we’ll all have a good time. 6 And if we don’t, the cake is sure to be good!
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Bye for now,
Yasemin
A Another is that I have to learn how to wait.
B I’m still working on an essay for my English class.
C I’m fairly sure that everyone will enjoy it.
D School starts again on Monday morning.
E Having said that, I did change a few things.
F It’s something I’ve thought about doing for a while.
G In fact, they even do discounts for students.
H We definitely paid less on average.
