Television programs contribute to societal violence by glorifying criminals, showcasing excessive gore, and revealing the methods behind criminal acts. This portrayal leads viewers to idolize criminals, become desensitized to violence, and potentially emulate criminal behavior. The influence is particularly pronounced among young audiences, who are more susceptible to these harmful messages.

Television programs are one of the major causes of violence in society

Cause 1

Glorifying criminals in documentaries and shows

Cause 2

Shows having too much uncensored gore

Cause 3

Displaying the inner workings of a criminal mind and how they commit crimes

Effect 1

People watching start putting these criminals on a pedestal and envy the glory that comes with
it

Effect 2

People become desensitized to gore, blood and other inhumane acts

Effect 3

Young audiences may learn and/or take inspiration from how these criminals act

Essay
TV is a source of information, learning and exposure especially for young audiences who are
easily influenced and thus, it has a large role in the spiking of violence lately. Criminals are often
glorified in media, painting their image as genius masterminds carrying out all these terrifying
and horrendous tasks. For example, the American serial killer Ted Bundy was portrayed as
conventionally attractive and charming which led to him having many admirers. The people
witnessing such cases notice the fame tied to these criminals and envy the popularity.
Moreover, TV shows have concerning amounts of uncensored gore, killing and violence making
the audience desensitized. What was once disgusting has become the norm. Consequently,
violence in real life doesn’t faze anyone either. Additionally, there are TV shows based on
famous criminals which show their life and how they plan and carry out their crimes. These
crimes are well-developed storylines which may lead to the audience being inspired. Those who
desire violence but are inexperienced or unaware become informed.
