FOREWORD
The BINUS BUSINESS SCHOOL (BBS) MM Program Thesis Guideline provides information regarding the
objectives, types, and procedures in thesis writing process. Furthermore, this guideline also includes
detailed instructions of the thesis formatting.
As part of our spirit for continuous improvement, several changes are made within this revised
guideline. The main change would be the addition of two new thesis types, which are Consulting Project
and Business Model Creation Project, alongside with the Research type. The thesis assessment criteria
are also provided in the guideline describing how the thesis will be assessed, as a benchmark of the
expected quality from the thesis. We emphasize the importance of avoiding plagiarism in any way
within the overall thesis writing process.
We expect that this Thesis Guideline could be beneficial for helping students in their thesis writing
process.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
In the BINUS Business School (BBS) Magister Manajemen (MM) program curriculum, thesis is the final
compulsory course. Unlike other courses in the curriculum, thesis is not a taught-course. It is a student
independent work, which is supervised by a faculty member. It aims to evaluate the students’ ability to
innovatively apply what they have studied in the taught courses on a specific issue. In line with the BBS
MM program objective, the innovation aspects (inventiveness, ingenuity, and inventiveness) would be
the major element of the thesis.
Upon the completion of thesis, students are expected to independently be able to:
• Critically review theories learned in the taught-courses
• Creatively synthesize theories learned in a perspective of an ingenuity issue of their interests
• Compose a scientific written report
• Confidently present the report
In the curriculum, thesis takes (worth) 6 SCU. MM Professional students are expected to finish their
thesis in 2 terms; MM Young Professional students are expected to finish their thesis in 1 term. There is
one of BBS faculty member (lecturer) assigned as a supervisor of the thesis process. At the end of thesis
period, students are evaluated individually by the board of examiners.
This guideline provides general explanation of the thesis process. It explains the research types and their
objectives, the policy and procedures, the written report formats, and thesis assessment criteria.

CHAPTER II
THESIS TYPES
There are three types of thesis that are available for the BBS MM program students. They are:
(i) Research
(ii) Consulting Project
(iii) Business Model Creation (BMC)
2.1. Research
Research type is a thesis based on an academic research. The general objective of this thesis
type is to provide a scientific evidence and contribution to the body of knowledge. This involves the
innovation aspects of the thesis. Students and supervisors are open to choose quantitative
(explanatory), qualitative (exploratory, descriptive), or mixed approaches to the research. For the
quantitative approach, hypotheses need to be formulated before being analyzed using any inferential
statistical methods. No hypothesis need to be formulated for the qualitative approach. It is expected
that BBS MM students conduct applied management research.
Upon the completion of the thesis with research, students are expected to be able to:
• Demonstrate the originality of research problems
• Critically review the relevant and competing theories
• Demonstrate the aptness of research design to the chosen research approach
This thesis type requires students to work and be assessed individually. One supervisor will be
assigned to each student. The board of examiners consists of three (3) faculty members.
Consulting type is a thesis based on a real company observation project. The general objective
of this thesis type is to provide a better and innovative business recommendation to the observed
company. This thesis type involves activities of identifying real business problems in the observed
company and formulating relevant, innovative, feasible scientific recommendations, which can be
implemented by the company. Therefore, a cost and benefit analysis need to be provided for any
proposed solutions, which should be able to answer practical questions from the company.
BINUS UNIVERSITY 5
Version : 4 Revision Date : October 29, 2021
Revision : 2 Effective From : October 29, 2021
Students choosing this type should be aware from the beginning that they should have a reliable
access to the company. It is strongly suggested that during the thesis process, there is a company liaison
available to discuss the process with students and thesis supervisors.
Upon the completion of consulting project thesis, students are expected to be able to:
• Identify the real business problems in the observed companies
• Demonstrate an ability to link the applied theories to the consulting process
• Provide the innovative and feasible recommendations
This thesis type requires students to work in a group of two (2). A supervisor would be assigned
to the group. The board of examiners consists of two (2) faculty members and one (1) company
representative. The company representative will assess the innovative and feasibility aspects of the
recommendations.
BMC is a thesis type based on a project. The general objective of the project is to develop an
innovative business model or to fill the opportunities gap an existing model. The business model need
Business model is defined as the rationale of how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value
(Osterwalder and Pigneur, 2010). Developing a business model involves activities, such as idea
generation, conversion, and diffusion.
Students choosing this thesis type should be aware that although the focus of the project is the
creativity of the invention, the project process should be conducted systematically. Scientific
justifications should be performed for every alternative chosen in the project. The expected output of
the project is a business plan and prototype.
Upon the completion of the BMC thesis, students are expected to be able to:
• Demonstrate a creative idea generation
• Demonstrate a methodological and scientific process
• Demonstrate the feasibility model
This thesis type requires students to work in a group of three (3). A supervisor would be
assigned to the group. The board of examiners consists of two (2) faculty members and one (1) business
person. The business will assess the innovative, attractiveness, and feasibility aspects of the project

THESIS PROCESS
3. Thesis Procedures
These are the steps need to be followed by students in the thesis process for all thesis types:
• Thesis Briefing
• Thesis Workshop
• Development and Submission of the Thesis Outline
• Conducting the Thesis
• Thesis Proposal Seminar
• Continuing the Thesis
• Submission of the Final Draft of Thesis
• Thesis Final Defense
• Submission of the Final (revised if any) Thesis
Thesis Briefing is an introduction seminar conducted in order to explain the overview and ground
rules for thesis writing process in BINUS BUSINESS SCHOOL. The topics covered will include explanation
of the learning objective, the overview for the available thesis types and the assessment criteria.
Thesis Workshop is conducted in order to provide detailed and comprehensive guideline for thesis
writing technique to student, according to the type chosen.
WORKSHOP IMPLEMENTATION
1. The workshop is divided into 3 groups according to the types, which are Research Group,
Consulting Project Group and BMC Group
2. Each workshop is conducted once (the workshop schedule will be informed further)
3. The workshop is mandatory for all thesis student (as one of the requirement for the thesis
defense)
4. Students attend the workshop according to the selected type
Students select the thesis topic accordingly with their interest, based on the topics that they have
been studied in BINUS BUSINESS SCHOOL. After selecting a topic, students continue to develop their
Thesis Outline, which describes these following chapters in general: introduction, problem statement,
the importance of the study, objective and benefit, and scope of the study. Thesis Outline consists of 2-3
pages and should be submitted to the Information Service as scheduled. The Thesis Outline will be
evaluated by the Head of School/Head of Program in order to determine the most suitable Supervisor.
The Thesis Outline constructed by preliminary ideas, thus it is subject to change according to the
Supervisor suggestions.

Students who will start the thesis writing process should register at the Information Service by
submitting the title or topic of the study that already been approved by the Thesis Committee. All
required forms for the thesis registration process are available at the Information Service. The
registration process is also including Supervisor Selection. Students propose 3 (three) Supervisor
candidates by completing the Supervisor Submission Form in accordance with the selected topic. The
Supervisor will be assigned by Head of School/Head of Program based on the Supervisor expertise
relevancy with the topic.
After the Supervisor and consultation schedule has been assigned, students could start to conduct
the study and write the thesis according to the selected research type. Thesis writing should follows to
the format of thesis writing guideline published by BINUS BUSINESS SCHOOL BINUS UNIVERSITY (refer to
Chapter 4). Thesis can be written either in Indonesian or English accordingly to the policy from Head of
School.
Consultation schedules for students from a study program that is applying 1 term consultation
period system, the consultations are conducted as a 6 times meeting within the whole effective term,
with maximal absences no more than 2 times. After the third consultation, student should submit the
Thesis Proposal and attend the Thesis Proposal Seminar.
For the 2 term consultation periods system, the consultation is divided into two phases, which are
Thesis 1 on the effective term and continue by Thesis 2 on the next term. The Thesis 1 consultations are
conducted 4 times in total, which conducted once every two weeks, where the students are obliged to
fill the attendance form. Maximal absence is no more than 1 (once) from the 4 (four) times of
scheduled consultations. Would if the student could not fulfilled the minimal consultations required,
therefore that student should extent the Thesis 1 period on the next term. By the end of Thesis 1, the
student is expected to complete the Thesis Proposal. On the end of the Thesis 1 period, student obliged
to join the Thesis Proposal Seminar.
For the Thesis 2 consultations period, the maximal absences is no more than twice (2) from the 6
(six) times of scheduled consultations. Besides the consultation schedules, student could ask for
additional consultations from their Supervisor. Would if the student could not fulfilled the minimal
consultations required, therefore that student should extent the Thesis 2 period on the next term.
Need to be acknowledged that thesis is students’ scientific work guided by Supervisor. Therefore,
students have to be fully responsible of the content and the completion time of their own thesis.
The Thesis Proposal Seminar is an open seminar where the students will present their Thesis
Proposal to the examiner team. The examiner team will evaluate the feasibility of the proposal and
recommend several revisions. The recommendation could either be a minor or a major revision.

activities within this step would include the data collection, data analysis and summarizing the finding of
the study.
In order to advance to the Thesis Final Defense process, students need to submit the Final Draft of
Thesis to the Information Service as scheduled. The Final Draft of Thesis should be bind in softcover
(black color for both sides) and submitted as 4 copies (1 original and 3 copy).
Students who completed the thesis writing and already attended the Proposal Seminars at least
twice, obligated to participate in Thesis Defense. Thesis defense conducted as an open seminar, where
the students present their study result in front of the Examiner Team. There is no specific dress code,
however students should dress in a professional and formal manner.
For the Consulting Project type thesis defense, the Examiners Team consists of two faculty member
examiners and the company’s representative equal to Director. The Thesis Defense schedule that has
been approved by the Supervisor and representation from the company must be given by students to
the Academic Operations by completing the thesis defense form at Information Services (1 st floor).
Whereas for the other types, Thesis Defense schedule will be arranged by Academic Operations. Thesis
defense will be held in BINUS BUSINESS SCHOOL campus according to the available office hour.
Passing grade is authorized by the Examiner Team. Students are not allowed to disapprove the
evaluation result or the passing grades. If there is a mistake within the evaluation process, Examiner
could only revise it during the Thesis Defense, and obliged to put initials on the revision on the
evaluation document.
Would the student PASS the Thesis Defense, before the whole thesis is bound with hardcover, thesis
must be revised by referring to the revision suggestions from the Examiner Team. The time duration for
the revision is set by the Examiner Team. In case the student fails to conduct the revision during the
time given, Examiner Team could reduce the passing grade that already been set on the Thesis Defense.
The revised thesis that already includes the recommendations (Revision Note) from the Examiner Team
should be submitted to the Information Services.

CHAPTER IV
THESIS CONTENTS
Each thesis type has compulsory contents should be satisfied in the thesis.
4.1. Research
This thesis type is based on the academic research; therefore all elements of academic research should
be included in the thesis. The research elements should be included are:
1. The importance of the research
2. Research problem(s)
3. Theoretical framework
4. Research design
5. Data analysis and discussion
6. Conclusion
7. Research limitation
8. Possible future research
The importance of the research: explains the reasons why the research should be conducted. The
reasons should be based on the facts, therefore hard data as evidence should be presented.
Research problem(s): describes the research focus. As an academic research, good research problems
(research questions) are derived from literature gap. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that sufficient
literature review should be conducted prior to research problems identification.
Theoretical framework: is a theory as basis for conducting the research. It should be derived from good
literature review. The framework should reflect the research variables will be employed in the research.
For quantitative research, theoretical framework will be tested using the research data. For qualitative
research, theoretical framework is used.
Research design: describes the general plans and approaches that will be undertaken in order to carry
out the research project, mainly explaining about the research variables, strategies, approaches and
time horizons.
Data analysis and discussion: data analysis explains the problem solving technique based on the
literature review and the model. While the discussion chapter defines the result of the research/project.
It should only consist of summary of the essential results from the study.
Conclusion: explains general conclusion of the study result concisely. Avoid discussing anything outside
of the study result.
Research limitation: explains the scope of the study, includes the topic that is covered and what is not
covered, as well as the depth of the study.

Revision : 2 Effective From : October 29, 2021
Possible future research: defines the future research need to be added based on the current study
result.
This thesis type is based on a real company observation project; therefore this thesis type mainly
consists of basic consultation project approaches, which should include:
1. The importance of the project (should use the company data)
2. Company problem identification
3. Project method
4. Data analysis and discussion
5. Recommendation and Feasibility
The importance of the project: explains the reasons in selecting specific issue from the company as well
as the importance and relevancy of the chosen issue in order to help the company. The reasons should
be based on the facts, therefore hard data as evidence should be presented.
Company problem identification: defines the main issue chosen for the project. As the nature of any
consultation project, the issue should be based on facts and permitted by the company. It is crucial to
involve the company in identifying the issue that need to be studied.
Project method: explains in details all the approaches and techniques applied in order to help solving
the existing problem.
Data analysis and discussion: data analysis explains the problem solving technique applied for the
project. While the discussion chapter defines the result of the research/project. It should only consist of
summary of the essential results from the study.
Recommendation and its feasibility: explains the practical implication of the result which feasible to be
applied; therefore suggestion should be directed towards the party which benefited from the study.
Elements:
1. Business environment analysis
2. Idea generation (Value proposition)
3. Business model design (building blocks of biz model)
4. Business model comparison analysis
5. Feasibility
Business environment analysis is an essential part of the project. Students may choose any relevant
business environment analysis. This part should lead the project into the new idea generation (new
value proposition)
BINUS UNIVERSITY 12
Version : 4 Revision Date : October 29, 2021
Revision : 2 Effective From : October 29, 2021
Idea generation (Value proposition) is a process of formulating the new idea of product/service/value to
the business stakeholders. The new idea should be related and relevant to the business environment
analysis.
Business model design is a process of shaping up the model that offers new value proposition. It consists
of several steps to develop the business model building blocks. Students may choose any relevant
business model design. It is strongly suggested that students choose the business model design process
based on the literature. For example, business model design proposed by Osterwalter & Pique (2010)
that develops 9 building blocks for a business model. The model blocks are:
1. The value proposition of what is offered to the market
2. The segment(s) of clients that are addressed by the value proposition
3. The communication and distribution channels to reach clients and offer them the value
proposition
4. The relationships established with clients
5. The key resources needed to make the business model possible
6. The key activities necessary to implement the business model
7. The key partners and their motivations to participate in the business model
8. The revenue streams generated by the business model (constituting the revenue model)
9. The cost structure resulting from the business model
Business model comparison analysis is required to test the robustness of proposed business model. It
should demonstrate the advantages of the proposed model compared to the existing ones.

CHAPTER V
THESIS ASSESSEMENT
Thesis assessment will be divided into two (2) formal assessments. The first assessment is a thesis
proposal (project progress) seminar. This is a formative assessment that is purported for evaluating the
thesis progress and providing feedback to the research (project). At the end of the seminar, there will
be no thesis grades generated, instead a list of feedbacks would be provided. It will be conducted
approximately in the middle of the research period.
The second assessment is conducted after students submit thesis final draft. This is a summative
assessment in which students should present their thesis and are examined individually. The thesis
grades will be given by the examiners on the assessment day; however, the final marks will be
announced later on.

CHAPTER VII
PLAGIARISM

work without acknowledging the original author. Some of the most common forms of plagiarism are as
follow:
- Stealing material from another source and passing it off as your own.
- Submitting a paper written by someone else and passing it off as your own.
- Copying sections of material from one or more source texts.
- Paraphrasing material from one or more source texts without supplying appropriate
documentation.
BINUS BUSINESS SCHOOL obliges a mandatory check for plagiarism to be conducted by the
entire faculty members upon receiving the Final Draft of Thesis from students. Clear of plagiarism
condition would be required by the students before their Thesis Defense date could be scheduled.
