Isoline Method
Isolines are lines joining places of equal value. This value may be in the form of quantity,
intensity or density. Isopleth is a method of construction of isolines. The term isopleth has been
derived from Greek word Isos meaning same and Plethron meaning measure. Few examples of
isopleths are: Isohyet, Isobar, Isotherm, Isohaline, Isoneph etc. Isopleths are used in climatic
data to show areas with the same temperature, pressure, rainfall etc. Isopleths are also used in
population or production data to show similarities between one area and another. Isopleth
lines are independent of political boundaries and best suited to show the natural pattern of
distribution of an element. But is it is confusing and time consuming when there are a large
number of dots or points.
Exercise 1: Prepare an Isohyet map on the basis of given rainfall values in cm.
Exercise 2: Prepare an Isobar map of India showing different pressure zones on the basis of
given pressure values in mb.
