hand lay track when I was five years old and I developed my About the Great Central Railway
skills from there. The Great Central is a Class 2 railway operating during the
1960’s. It runs in the northeast corner of Maine connecting
with the Maine Central at Guilfoyle Junction in the south and
with the Canadian Pacific Railway at Inwood on the US/Cana-
dian border in the north.
The GCR has three branch lines as well, including the
Abbie Springs branch that connects at Inwood and runs down
to the coast. This is the section of the Great Central that I
model. Because of the light rail and the weight restrictions on
bridges, the GCR has a fleet of GE 70 ton diesels that handle
this line.
The engine house for this branch is at Inwood, and on a
good day you will see the 70 Tonners plus GCRs and CPRs
GP-9s. This makes for some very interesting railfanning. On
any given day during the week there are three trains that han-

The Great Central Railway has been, and still
is, a fun layout to build and operate in the space I
have to model in. Although I said at the start of
the article that the layout is about 90% complete,
as we all know layouts are never complete and
there are always changes. If you had chance to
see the article in the March 2003 issue of Rail-

there have been changes on my layout. The
motive power has changed, the SW, GP and RS
units are gone and have been replaced by three
GE 70 ton diesels made by RY Models. These
are excellent models and fit more to the operation
of the layout. Also, the paint scheme has had a
change. The logo has been replaced with a cigar

These three photos are from Andy Romano’s now defunct
Ironbound RR. Andy says the Ironbound was, “... an experiment
to see just how small a functioning O Scale pike could be made.
It was a folding, three-section, switching pike mounted on legs
and wheels for easy movement. The center section was
approximately 2' x 5' with fold-down ‘wings’ hinged to each end
of the central section. So, when opened fully, it was 2' x 15' and
folded down to no more than 2' x 51⁄2'. Small enough to fit in
anyone’s garage, apartment or spare room.”
