WEEK 2 CONFLICT RESOLUTION

At the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to.


• Define conflict resolution
• Suggest non-violent methods of resolving conflicts.
• State the reasons why resolution of conflict.
• State how we can enhance national peaceful co-existence.
• Mention attributes required for conflicts resolution.

Conflict resolution can be defined as the informal or formal process that two or
more parties use to find a peaceful solution to their dispute. It is also a means of
settling a conflict or dispute that has long started through dialogue bringing together
the parties involved to know who is wrong or right. The peace makers will be called
children of God.
WAYS OF RESOLVING CONFLICTS
• Negotiation: This is a situation where two parties involved in the conflict
initiating and facilitating the settlement. It is back-and-forth
communication between the parties of the conflict with the goal of trying to find
a solution.
• Reconciliation: Reconciliation happens after Negotiation where the parties
have forgiven and accepted each other, this will facilitate restoration of failed
relationship
• Mediation: Mediation is a conflict resolution process in which a neutral
mediator assists the parties through constructive discussion and
negotiation of their issues to reach a mutually acceptable resolution.
• Arbitration: This happen when matter is handed over to an independent
body to act as judge and agree to agree with whatever decision on the
body. Sometimes UNO and AU impose their verdicts on the parties in conflict.
Arbitration is the submission of a disputed matter to an impartial person (the
arbitrator) for decision. The Process: Arbitration is typically an out-of-court
method for resolving a dispute. The arbitrator controls the process, while
listen to both sides and decide.
• Litigation: This has to do with going to a court for settlement when the
above methods of resolution do not work. At this point any ruling or
decision by the judge in a law court must be obeyed and is final.
Other ways of resolving conflicts are.
• Dialogue/Discussion, through police intervention, government intervention,
family or village head, conflict can be managed by declaring war

EFFECTS OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION ON NATIONAL PEACEFUL
COEXISTENCE
Conflict resolution is very important for many reasons, among which are the
following.
• Happiness
• Technological advancement
• Development plans are easily implemented.
• Harmonious working relationship
• World peace
• Creativity (new ideas will enhance personal and society productivity and
development)
• Peace of mind.
• Population growth
• Safety from danger
• Opportunity to relate with others.

b. Active Listening Skills
c. Empathy/understanding/compassion
d. Facilitation
e. Mediation Skills
• (Focus on the problem. Rather than blaming individuals, identify the issues
at stake, and invite others to join you in thinking about solutions.
• Engage in joint problem solving.
• Promote effective feedback.
• Mutual understanding
f. Respect for rule of Law
g. Tolerance
h. Self-control
i. Be a problem solver.
j. Accountability.
CONCLUSION
Conflicts are normal and a constant process everywhere. We should learn to manage
our differences.
