ACTIVITY – 3
DEVELOPING SUSTAINABLE WATER
MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
13/12/2024-16/12/2024
ABSTRACT
Water is precious natural resource for sustaining life and environment but it is lacking in India.
Sustainable management of water resources is vital for ensuring sustainable development of our
economy and social life. In view of the vital importance of water for human and animal life, for
maintaining ecological balance and for economic and developmental activities of all kinds, and
considering its increasing scarcity, the planning and management of water resource and its
optimal, economical and equitable use has become a matter of the utmost urgency. Management
of water resources in India is of paramount importance to sustain one billion plus population.
Water management is a composite area with linkage to various sectors of Indian economy
including the agricultural, industrial, domestic and household, power, environment, fisheries and
transportation sector. The water resources management practices should be based on increasing
the water supply and managing the water demand under the stressed water availability
conditions. For maintaining the quality of freshwater, water quality management strategies are
required to be evolved and implemented. Decision support systems are required to be developed
for planning and management of the water resources project. There is interplay of various
factors that govern access and utilization of water resources and in light of the increasing demand
for water it becomes important to look for holistic and people-centered approaches for water
management. Clearly, drinking water is too fundamental and serious an issue to be left to one
institution alone. It needs the combined initiative and action of all, if at all we are serious in
socioeconomic development. Safe drinking water can be assured, provided we set our mind to
address it. The present article deals with the review of various options for sustainable water
resource management.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Water resource management is the activity of planning, developing, distributing and
managing the optimum use of water resources. It is a sub-set of water cycle management.
Water is essential for our survival. The field of water resources management will have to
continue to adapt to the current and future issues facing the allocation of water. It is likely
that ongoing climate change will lead to situations that have not been encountered. As a
result, alternative management strategies are sought for in order to avoid setbacks in the
allocation of water resources.
1.1The Importance of Water Management
Water management affects many aspects of our lives. Water is so common that we often do
not think about where it comes from or where it is managed. But bad water management can
really hit us hard. Water management is a very important issue from several angles such as
development of water bodies for future, protection of available water bodies of from
pollution and over exploitation and to prevent disputes. A paramount issue is water-its
availability, quality and management. Extensive hydrological information is necessary to
develop water resources and protect them.
Below are the some keys ways in which water management is important
1. Drinking water: Humans need to drink around 8 glasses of water a day in order get
sufficient hydration. So, clean drinking water is a necessary for us. Without water, we can
only survive for a few days at most. But, if we have water and no food, we can survive for
several weeks. This shows just how the crucial it is that we have daily access to clean water
that is suitable for drinking.
2. Washing and cleaning: We also use water to keep ourselves, our clothes and our home
clean and hygienic. A clean water supply is important for this too.

3.Agriculture: Water is used throughout the world to grow the crops such as grains and
fruits. A good water supply is needed to prevent hunger and famine.
4. Leisure and Fun: Swimming, boating and any other leisure activities involve water.
Swimming pool water needs to be managed by treating it with chlorine and regularly testing
its level of bacteria and other substances, for instance, to ensure that it is safe for people to
swim in.
5. Biodiversity: Managing water wells ensures that we do not deplete or contaminate rivers,
lakes and other important water sources which are habitats for a wide range of birds,
mammals, fish, reptiles, and amphibians as well water dwelling plants.
Below are the some reasons why water management is very important:
•Our access to water is limited.
•Water management addresses complex issues.
•Water management tackles serious challenges.
•Water management and food production are linked.
•Water scarcity affects over 40% of the world’s population.
•More than 2 billion people lack reliable water services.
•Privatizing water systems raises prices.
Semi-closed mobile wallets: These types of wallets allow consumers to make
merchant payments. The mobile wallet company usually ties up with certain specified
merchants.
Closed wallets: In these types of wallets a certain specific amount of money is locked
with the company. There is also no scope for withdrawal.

METHEDOLOGY
2.1Discussion with Teammates
We had made research on various fields that are creating problem in our present world. From
all other field we found that in present situation “Sustainable Water Management System”
is very important. So, we planned a 3-week awareness program on our village in order to
provide information of sustainable water management system.
2.2Narrowing Down to the Problem
Water is a very important need for almost all our daily work. We cannot imagine a day
without water. So, conservation of water is need of the day. When we look at the survey
made by many organizations it was found that in agriculture field the water is used more that
it is required. The different roles of the citizen may mean different responsibilities, but the
need to protect and judiciously manage various drinking water sources cannot be over
emphasized in any role. In order to develop an understanding and appreciation of safe and
clean drinking water among rural communities and to enable them to determine the quality
of drinking water. In agricultural fields in order to reduce the water consumption there are
many substitutes method which will consume very little amount of water and produce yield
equal to more than traditional method. To ultimately provide all rural households with
adequate piped safe drinking water supply within the household premises as this will relieve
women and girls, especially, from the drudgery of fetching water, address malnutrition
issues, and increase the time available for education and leisure, while also preventing
contamination likely while fetching water from a distant source So we wanted to bring an
awareness among villagers about various substitute methods and bring an awareness among
them.

CHAPTER 3
IMPLEMENTATION
The Activity began on 13/12/2024-16/12/2024. We visited houses in Paddayur village
Puttur. We interacted with the village people and collected a lot of details on their water
availability and its requirement. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire
by recall method and the target respondents were housewives. The major consumption use of
water has been for domestic purposes and irrigation with priority allocation for drinking
water purposes.
The volume of storage tanks in which households store water was assessed and the number
storage tanks of water used in different activities like bathing, clothes washing, utensil
cleaning, house cleaning, watering the lawn and pots etc. were estimated, where running tap
or piped water was used in some activities, the duration for which the tap was used was
estimated and the quantity of water delivered per minute from the tap was measured.
We presented them with a questionnaire containing the following questions.
For which of the below activities would you require large amount of water
Domestic/ agriculture/ fisheries/ power generation?
How many amount of water on an average is used by your family?
What are the main sources of water to your home and agricultural land?
Do you practice any agricultural techniques like drip irrigation, sprinkler system
Etc. which would require less water supply to your crop field?
How do you meet scarcity of water at home and agricultural land?
The combined answers from the localities were quite satisfactory with regard to importance
given to water management and did not showcase any menacing issues. Most of the residents
used water for only domestic purpose wherein a few residents also used water for
agricultural purposes. As an answer to the first question, we get the below result.

3.1 Spreading Awareness about Water Management System
After collecting literal information of various methods of agricultural we gave awareness
about water management system and purification methods.
Following are the information given by us on water management systems to the people of
village during our activity process:
Waste water systems: recycling and treating: Sewage systems help to dispose of water in a
clean and safe way. They also very often involve recycling water ad treating it so that it is
safe to be piped back in to people’s homes and used for drinking, washing and so on.
Irrigation systems: Good quality irrigation systems can be deployed to nourish crops in
drought hit areas. These systems can be managed so that water is not wasted and they can
use recycled water or rain water to avoid unnecessarily depleting water.

3.2 Water Storage Methods
The next part of the project was to visit a water storage at sajipamunnur village and to get the
information about water storage system. We visited on 04/11/2022. We were very interested
to know about water storage methods, and they also showed to have a great deal of concern
about water crisis faced in today’s world. we have discussed various drinking water sources,
merits and limitations of the sources as well as threats to these sources. We have also
discussed different water systems and various components of piped water systems. A system
is said to be sustainable if the technology, its capacity to respond to demand, required service
level, technical skills needed to operate and maintain, and cost of maintenance are all
sustainable, the present users do not forgo the availability of the system in the future. They
explained it very well they also expressed their thankfulness to us for visiting them to know
about water storage methods.
