Introduction:

*Introductory statement about mnemonics.

*The importance of memory and retention in engineering courses.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the impact of mnemonic techniques on students' learning and retention of

engineering concepts.

2. To identify which types of mnemonics are most effective for engineering students.

3. To analyze students' perceptions and experiences regarding the use of mnemonics in

their studies.

4. To recommend integrating mnemonic strategies into engineering courses to enhance

academic performance.

Introduction:

Toncheva (2024) cites the concept of mnemonics as a set of memory techniques

that help people remember information more easily. The word comes from the ancient

Greek μνημονικόν, meaning "the art of remembering," and is linked to Mnemosyne, the

Greek goddess of memory. Mnemonics were used long before writing was invented,

helping shamans recall long spells and travelers remember routes without maps.

People have different ways of memorizing information. Some find it easier to write

things down, while others prefer reading repeatedly or making associations. Mnemonics

are useful in learning because they make memorization easier and more enjoyable.

They also help students stay interested, feel more positive about studying, and stay

motivated. In today’s world, where people often struggle to process large amounts of

information, mnemonics offer a simple and effective way to organize and remember

important details. They are not only helpful in school but also in jobs like teaching,

medicine, and pharmacy, where remembering information quickly is important.

(Murashov,2021)

In addition, mnemonic techniques serve as a learning strategy that helps encode

information in a way that makes it easier to remember and recall. As stated by

Drushlyak et al. (2021), these techniques should be applied to process new information

by forming associative links using specific letters, words, or visual cues. Educators use

various mnemonic methods, such as the Consistent Associations Technique, Key

Letters Method, and Transformation Method, to enhance learning. Research has shown

that these techniques are effective in helping students retain mathematical concepts. A

strong foundation in mathematics is essential for undergraduate students, particularly

those in engineering, as many engineering principles rely heavily on mathematical skills.

Without a solid grasp of mathematics, students may struggle with other subjects,

affecting their overall academic performance. Lecturers have observed that not all

students excel in engineering mathematics (Perante, 2022). Learning mathematics

should be an enjoyable experience for students (Tukiman et al., 2021). By guiding

students to study mathematics in an organized manner, they can develop a greater

sense of achievement and enjoyment. However, various studies have highlighted the

challenges students face in mastering mathematics, including engineering mathematics

(Finesilver et al., 2022).
