 History of the College

Sourashtra College was started in the year 1967 with donations

from the philanthropists by the Sourashtra College Council. The
College Started functioning from June 1967 with Pre-University
Courses.
The members of the Sourashtra College Council raised the
magnificent buildings at the foothill of Pasumalai hill in 1972. B.A.
English, B.B.A., and B.Com., the three Under Graduate courses were
introduced and the college began to function from July 1972 onwards.
In 1975 B.Sc. Mathematics Course was introduced. Subsequently in
the years to come two more courses B.Sc. Physics and B.Sc. Chemistry
were introduced. Later in the year 1984 B.Com. Corporate secretaryship
course was introduced. B.Sc., Computer science was started in the
year 1987.
The college introduced Post Graduate courses M.Com. in 1981
and M.A. English in 1982. M.Sc. Mathematics was started in the year
1986.
The College Council in its commitment to provide education to
the girls, started admitting girl students in 1984. It is functioning as a
Linguistic Minority Co-educational Institution.
With a vision of elevating the college into Research centre,
M.Phil. programme was introduced in the department of Commerce and
English. As a milestone in the history of the college, the department of
commerce was made a Research centre by introducing Ph.D.
The College was Awarded Autonomous status by the University
Grants Commission from the Academic year 2011-2012 and it was
conferred by the Madurai Kamaraj University.
Our college management runs 16 buses to facilitate Girl
Students and staff members.
Mineral water facilities are provided by Management.
The college provides uninterrupted power supply to the students
and staff by establishing powerful generators.

The College is managed by the Sourashtra College Council,
Madurai, registered on 24.09.1966. The Managing Committee consists
of 9 members including the office bearers, the University Nominee and
the Principal.
The College Started functioning on June 22, 1967 and was
formally inaugurated on 7th September, 1967.

Attendance and Leave of Absence:
1. All the students should attend the college regularly and punctually.
2. Attendance will be taken every hour.
3. Students seeking leave of absence should submit an application in
the prescribed form duly signed, to the principal through their
respective HODs.
4. In case of sudden illness, a medical certificate also should be
produced along with leave application, if the duration of leave
exceeds 3 days.
5. No student will be permitted to absent himself/herself with leave on
the following periods: a) In the opening week of a term; b) Before or
after special holidays; c) Before examination.
6. Each month’s fine list will be put up on the Office Notice Board.
The fine should be paid within a fortnight.
7. The name of the student who absents himself / herself without leave
application for a period of TEN days will be removed from the
college nominal roll.
8. Attendance Certificate can be withheld in the case of the student who
fail to attend at least 75% of the lecture or practical classes in any

 RULES AND REGULATION
INSIDE THE CAMPUS
RAGGING AND EVE TEASING ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED.
THEY ARE OFFENCES AND PUNISHABLE UNDER
PROHIBTION OF RAGGING ACT 1997.
1. All students must wear identity cards, when they are inside the
college campus.
2. Students shall enter the classes on time and late-comers will lose
attendance. However, they will be allowed to attend the classes
with the permission of the HOD.
3. Students shall not make noise while leaving
4. The first hour of each day will start with prayer.
5. Students are expected to give due respect to teachers when they
enter the class room.
6. Loitering and making noise in the corridors during class hours must
be avoided.
7. Students shall maintain order inside the class rooms even in the
absence of the teacher.
8. Severe punishment will be given to those students who cause
damage to the college property. Therefore, students shall handle
electrical fittings, laboratory equipment, computers, library books
and other college properties carefully.
9. No visitor (friend or family member) is allowed to meet the student
during class hours without the permission of the HOD
10. Whistling and hooting are serious offences. Students must avoid
these practices inside the campus especially during college
functions.
11. Students are not allowed to take part in the social / family functions
of their classmates during working hours.
12. Students are allowed to go tours / one day trips only after getting
the permission from the parents, the HOD and the Principal.
13. Students found smoking, using drugs or alcohol inside the campus
or during functions will be expelled from the college.
14. Students should not bring mobile phones to the college.

15. Organising and participating in unauthorised meetings / function,
relating to our college inside the campus is punishable.
16. Students asked to receive their marksheet from the respective HOD
with their parents.
OFF CAMPUS
Students are expected to behave decently in public places like
bus stands, bus stops and during bus travel. Any incident detrimental to
the interest of the college will be viewed seriously.
Crowding and indulging in undesirable activities near the
college main entrance, causing nuisance to the public will be seriously
dealt with.
DRESS CODE
Every student of the college shall follow the following dress code.
a. Wear modest, decent and acceptable dress.
b. Wearing T. Shirts and Black shirts are not permitted.
c. Girls are expected to wear sarees or chudithar with dupatta properly
pinned.
Under the Educational Rules of the Government, the Principal
has full powers to impose fine, suspend or expel the students from the
college, for the violation of any one of these rules.

ATTENDANCE
1. Attendance will be marked at the beginning of every hour.
2. No Student will be allowed to absent himself or herself from the
college without submitting leave letter. He/she must apply for leave
in advance, stating explicitly the reasons for his/her absence. In cases
where absence is due to unforeseen circumstances, application for
leave should be submitted on the first day of return to the College.
3. All leave letters should be countersigned by the parent or guardian in
the case of day scholars and in the case of resident students, by the
deputy warden concerned.
4. No student shall abstain himself/ herself from internal tests without
the prior permission of the Head of the Department concerned.

5. Students should take tests seriously. No student will be permitted to
leave the hall before 10 minutes.
SPECIFIC RULE:
The name of the student who is continuously absent for fifteen
days will be removed from roll and he / she will be permitted to attend
the classes only after meeting the Principal with parents.
EXAMINATIONS
1. In every semester, two centralised internal assessment tests will be
conducted and 3rd test will be decentralised for P.G. Courses.
2. Semester examinations will be held in November and April for the
odd and even Semesters respectively
3. Application for the semester examinations will be issued to the
students from the Office of the Controller of Examinations.
4. Students should verify the details in the application such as photo,
name, Register number and title of the papers and their codes.
5. Students should pay the examination fees in the college office.
6. The application, signed by the student and forwarded by the Head of
the Department, must be submitted to the Office of the Controller of
the Examinations on or before the due date.
7. Late application will not be accepted on any circumstances.
8. Hall Tickets will be issued to the students by the college office on
production of the “No Dues” Certificates.
9. It is mandatory for the students to bring the Hall Ticket and Identity
Card for all examinations.
10. Indulging in copying, malpractice and exchange of answer sheets
will be viewed seriously.

Laboratory Rules:
 Students should do only the specified experiments given in the cycle.
 The interference of any students into other’s work is prohibited and
punishable.
 Student should handle the apparatus with care.
 The difficulty felt during the practical work should be brought
immediately to the notice of the Staff Member.
 Any article or apparatus broken by students must be replaced. In
fixing up charge, decision of the HOD shall be final.
 Each student should provide himself/herself with two note books. On
any account loose- sheets of paper should not be used for record
observations. Students should obtain the note book supplied in the
laboratory.
 Students should have completed 80% of practical to appear for the
summative practical examinations.

 The bonafide certificate for practical work required as per the
University regulation will not be granted unless the attendance and
the performance of the student in the laboratory is satisfactory.
Library Rules and Regulations:
 Each aided course students will be given three tickets to borrow
three books for UG Student. PG Students will be given four ticket to
borrow four books.
 Books of reference should not be taken out of library.
 The students are required to bring the identity card positively. A
students shall use the book for 15 days and renewal can be made for
three times.
 Any marking, underlings, clipping of annotating in books is
forbidden.
 Books should be returned on or before the last date stamped on the
date – slip.
 A student who fails to return the book within the prescribed time
shall be fined Rs. 1/- for each college working day of default.
Library fine shall be paid to the librarian.
 If a book is lost the student has to pay three times of the current price
of the book.
 Neither the Hall Ticket nor the Transfer Certificate and conduct
certificate will be issued to those who fail to surrender their library
books.
 Staff and students while entering the library are requested to enter
their details.
 Books issue time 10.00 A.M. to 3.55 P.M. only.

National Service Scheme
Students are eligible to become member of the National Service
Scheme. Those students who are desirous of joining the NSS have to
enroll their names with the Programme Officers. The main objectives of
the NSS are services to the community. It is sought to arouse the social
conscience of students and provide them with the opportunity to work
with the people around the educational institution.
NSS Programmes cover four aspects:
1. Institutional work: The students may be place in selected welfare
agencies outside the campus to work as volunteers.
2. Institutional Project: Improvement of campuses, Construction of play
fields, Swimming pools etc.
3. Eradication illiteracy, Minor irrigation work, Agricultural operation,
Health, Hygienic sanitation, Development of rural co-operatives,
saving drive, Construction of Rural roads etc., (Preferably by
adopting a village within the reach of the college.)

4. Urban Project: Adult Education, Welfare of slum dwellers, training
in civil defence, setting up first-aid, Hospital Work etc.

National Cadet Corps

National Cadet Corps training will be imparted to willing
students in the degree classes. Those students who are willing to join
N.C.C. have to enrol their names with the N.C.C. officer.
The Aims of the N.C.C. are:
1. To develop qualities of character, courage, comradeship, discipline,
leadership, secular outlook, spirit of adventure and sportsmanship
and ideals of selfless service among the youth to make them useful
citizens.
2. To create a human resource of organised, trained and motivated
youth to provide leadership in all walks of life including the Armed
Forces and always available for the service of nation.
3. To create suitable environment to motivate the youth to take up a
career in the Armed Forces.
Social Service League & W.U.S. to develop the Personality:
The Social Service League and World University Service
League of the College devote their attention to the students and
community.
Students’ Aid Fund:
Each student of the college will be asked to pay Rs.3/- every
academic year at the time of admission. The contribution from the
students towards this fund is purely voluntary.
The amount paid by the student will not be refunded under any
circumstances.
The amount thus collected from the students and Government
grants shall be deposited in a separate Bank account and shall be
operated upon by the principal.
The objective of this fund is to render financial assistance to
poor and deserving students to meet their tuition fees or examination
fees or to purchase books or similar other expenses. Limited assistance

may be given to the students to meet their hostel mess, clothing or
medical expenses, if their needs are considered genuine, interest free
loans may also be granted to deserving students from the Students Aid
Fund subject to a maximum of 50%. No scholarship or stipend will be
given from this fund.
The financial assistance shall be cancelled or forfeited at the
discretion of the Principal for misconduct, irregularity in attendance or
failure to make satisfactory progress.
The fund shall not be utilized for giving prizes, rewards etc., to
students.
Unspent balance, if any, may be carried forward to the next year
and utilised for the purpose mentioned above.
The quantum of assistance to each student shall be determined
by the Students’ Aid Fund Committee.
The said committee shall consist of a chairman and two other
members.
The principal shall be Ex- officio Chairman of the committee.
One member from the teaching staff and one from the students shall be
nominated by the principal.
The principal is empowered to frame, alter, supplement rules
and conditions as and when necessary subject to the instructions
received from the University Grants Commission.
Contribution to the Students’ Aid Fund by the management is
not permissible. The members of the Managing Committee of the

The accounts of students’ Aid Fund shall be audited by a
qualified chartered accountant and fees or related expenditure shall not
be met from the Students’ Aid Fund.
The decision of the Chairman of the Fund regarding the awards
of financial assistance and interpretation of the rules and conditions of
the fund shall be final.
Scholarships:
Scholarships of various categories are awarded by State and
Central Governments on the basis of the income of the parents as well
as the merit of applicants. Details can be had from the office.

Notice: Any scholarships or fee remission may be cancelled by the
College Council at any time for unsatisfactory conduct for the reason
that the student does not maintain that standard of work which is
expected.

Saratchandran Weaving Mills Endowment for Vinayagar
Temple Pooja was instituted by Sri Saratchandran
Endowment Lectures:
1. Scholarship for thesis of University on Kambaramayana either in
Tamil or in English was instituted by M/s. Sitalakshmi Charities on
04.05.1976.
Scholarship will be awarded to the best student of this college for his
higher studies on the basis of thesis submitted by him on the above
subject.
The scholarship so awarded will be available to the prize winner till
he/she completes Degree Course or Post Graduate Studies or any
other research qualifying him/her for a Doctorate Degree. Lectures
on Kambaramayana by eminent scholars will be arranged.
2. Smt. Muthulakshmi Ammal Memorial Endowment:
The above Endowment instituted by Thiru. B.K.M.
Ananthapadmanabaier on 11.03.1977 and 07.05.1987 for award of
prizes to the students who stand first, second and third on the inter
collegiate competitions on Tamil Literature and also for the literary
talk by a scholar.
Scholarships:
1. Dr. Gandhi Bai Educational Fund was instituted on 08.01.1974 by
Selvi Dr. E. Gandhi Bai. This is instituted to sanction scholarships to
the poor and deserving boys and girls of the Sourashtra Community
to meet payment of fees, cost of books, hostel charges, etc., from
Degree up to any Professional or other course at the discretion of the
Managing Committee.
2. Thiru N.M.R. Subburaman Scholarship Endowment was instituted
by M/s. Sitalakshmi Trust on 31.12.1975.

5. Er. T.K. Mahendra Babu Scholarship Endowment Fund was
instituted by Er. T.K. Mahendra Babu, Singapore on 20.12.1994.
This Scholarship will be awarded to 2 or 3 poor deserving students
from U.G. to P.G. level to make payment of fees, cost of books and
the like.
6. Er. T.K. Mahendra Babu Scholarship Endowment Fund was
instituted by Er. T.K. Mahendra babu, Singapore on 25.12.1995.
This Scholarship will be awarded to 2 or 3 poor deserving students
from U.G. to P.G. level to make payment of fees, cost of books and
the like.
7. The “SOUCOM2000’ Scholarship endowment fund was instituted
by the students of Department of Commerce on 17.03.2001. This
Scholarship will be awarded to the best B.Com. student selected by
the Department of Commerce on merit-cum-means basis to pay
college tuition fees.
8. Sri Dhruvas S. Vijaylakshmi Ammal Scholarship Endownment was
instituted by Prof. D.S. Rajendran, Librarian, Sourashtra College.

Sourashtra College Alumni Association (SCAAN)
The Sourashtra College Alumni Association was started in the
year 1995 by the college staff members who are the old students of the
Sourashtra College. Old Students of the Sourashtra College are eligible
to become life members of the Association. Every year the outgoing
students of both UG and PG become the members for a period of one
year. The main objectives of the Association are services to the
student’s community.
Activities of the Association
1. Career and vocational guidance to the outgoing students.
2. Free spoken English classes, various aptitude test classes for the
benefit of the students.
3. Financial Aid to the poor meritorious students.

PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION
A Parent- Teacher Association has been formed in the interest of
the students and their parents. This Association helps to develop close
links and promote co-operation between the parents and the teachers. A
good opportunity provides to the parents for useful interaction with the
teachers to know the progress of their wards and also to represent to the
teachers and the management for furthering all round development and
welfare of the students.
This Association will be liberally allowed to go through the
student’s individual Record Book to have an updated progress of each
student.
CAREER GUIDANCE CELL
As per the direction of the Government of Tamil Nadu, a Career
Guidance Cell has been organized in our college to provide information
for the students so that the youth may be the true beneficiaries for a
prospective future.
The Main objectives of the cell are:
 To provide information available on the jobs, positions and
opportunities
 To conduct seminars, workshops, etc.,
 To assess the aptitude towards preference of jobs
 To organise awareness campaign in the College Campus and
 To mobilise resources for the needy students to apply for
jobs.
A monthly report will be sent to the Director of Collegiate
Education, Chennai on the performance of the cell.
