Text 1
Zoey was still in bed when a gentle beep registered an incoming call. A muttered command made the small
screen beside her bed come to life. It showed Patrick’s face. ‘Still in bed? So, the fire alarm didn’t wake
you up?’ ‘What fire alarm?’ She must have looked confused because a moment later his face faded away, to be
replaced by some news footage: Early this morning, the systems detected a possible fault in the electrical
installation in Precinct 39B on Level 245. Robots have immediately sealed off the endangered area …
Patrick came back on the screen. ‘It’s the media library, just two blocks away from your flat. But don’t worry,’
he added quickly, mistaking her total lack of interest for concern, ‘They say there’s no real danger to the
residential area around it. Still, the park near the library has been closed, so we can’t go skating there as
we’d planned.’ He sounded a bit annoyed. ‘I don’t care,’ Zoey said offhandedly. ‘Patrick, you once mentioned
your dad had taken you to level 40. I’d like to go there today.’ ‘The street market?’ Patrick looked dismayed.
‘It’s a really wretched place, swarming with strange and dangerous people. We could be mugged, for God’s
sake! Why would you even want to go there?’ ‘Well, I want to buy something artistic, not one of those
computer-made models, but a real piece of art.’ She hoped she’d sounded convincing enough. ‘But it’ll take us
a long time to get there,’ Patrick was definitely trying his best to put her off the idea. ‘The trans-module
moving sidewalks will be crowded. And what about the security guards at the module exits? They’ll insist on us
turning back. ‘They can’t stop us. It’s not illegal to go there. As yet, that is.’ Zoey sounded really determined.
‘Still, I don’t want to waste the whole Saturday morning. Look, why don’t we just go to one of those lovely
dome cafés, have a chat and enjoy the view?’ Patrick suggested. ‘We’ve done that so many times,’ Zoey said
angrily. ‘We’ve tried everything here, we’ve been to every nook and cranny in the top levels. It’s all so
unbearably perfect, automatic, safe and regulated. I want to see those parts of the city where people still live
like they did in the old days. ‘You’re crazy!’ said Patrick, a hint of resignation in his voice. ‘Meet you in about
20 minutes.’ Zoey got out of bed and went to the wall. She unwittingly pressed a button, and the wall turned
into a huge window. A few miles away she could see the Sundome, a huge twin skyscraper city rising from the
surface of the sea. The sea looked beautifully calm today. She started wondering what it would be like to be
out there, on one of the ships people used to sail on in the past, when the oceans and seas were not dotted
with skyscrapers.

Text 2
If you’ve seen the film Dredd, you might recall what life looks like in the Megacity, where huge skyscrapers are
in fact cities in their own right, seemingly providing their inhabitants with everything they need. The floors are
modelled on streets, and it’s usually the case that the higher the level, the higher the standard of living.
But is this somewhat gloomy vision of the future really so unrealistic? Well, when asked about possible
solutions to overpopulation, a lot of futurists agree that unless humanity learns to colonise outer space, the
construction of gigantic buildings, containing a whole city, might be the only real way ahead. Studies into the
feasibility leave no doubt: we possess all the necessary know-how to turn this science-fiction idea into reality.
A lot still remains unclear, however, about any skyscraper cities of the future and whether they should be

allowed to come into existence. While most experts agree that such cities will be self-sufficient, independent in
terms of power, labour and food supplies, the futurists’ visions of life in them range from a dreary one,
with slums and acute class divisions, to a seemingly idyllic setting, fully automated and regulated to an almost
absurd degree of safety, where everyone knows their place. Which of these visions is more likely?

I’ve recently seen the film Dredd and couldn't help wondering what life’s going to be like in the future. The film
features 1 _________________________, which are actually whole cities capable of providing their residents
with everything they need. I’ve also read a story which is set in a similar place. What struck me was a scene
when Zoey, bored with her life ‘upstairs’, asks Patrick to take a trip to a marketplace on level 40. Patrick finds
the whole idea 2 _________________________ and tries to talk Zoey out of it. He argues that the security
officers will try to stop them from going there. Still, Zoey’s determined to go and see a part of the city where
people might still be living as they did in the past.
It may seem that the idea of such structures could be a sensible way to deal with the problem of
overpopulation on Earth until we possess the technology to 3 _________________________, but what would
life actually look like in such a city? Just like in the story I’ve mentioned, there might be strong class divisions,
meaning that the 4 _________________________, the better your social position is. And what about the
people living in the lowest levels, ‘the slums’? It doesn’t look like much of a ‘brave new world’, does it?
