Generations of wireless communication

Wireless Communication
Data communication occurs in the unguided medium when the sender and receiver are not physically
connected but use the free space as a medium for transmission using the antennas. The data
transmission either uses Radio waves or microwaves to transmit wirelessly between the devices.
We have made very huge improvements in wireless communication and have expanded the
capabilities of our wireless communication system. We all have seen various generations in our life.
Let’s discuss them one by one.
1G (1st Generation):
First-generation mobile networks relied on analogue radio systems, which meant that users could
only make phone calls and not send or receive text messages. The 1G network was first introduced in
Japan in 1979 before being rolled out in other countries, such as the USA, in 1980.

Cell towers were built around the country to make it work, meaning that signal coverage could be
obtained from greater distances. However, the network was unreliable and had some security issues.
For instance, cell coverage would often drop, it would experience interference by other radio signals,
and it could easily be hacked due to a lack of encryption.

This means that conversations can be heard and recorded with a few tools.

Features of 1G (1st Generation):

o First-time calling was introduced in mobile systems.
o It used analog signals.
o It used an FDD scheme and typically allocated a bandwidth of 25 Mhz.
o The coverage area was small.
o No roaming support between various operators.
o Low sound quality.
o Speed:- 2.4 kbps.

Drawbacks of 1G Technology
o Only the voice can be transmitted in 1G and its quality is very low.
o Mobile Phones cannot have a long life in battery usage and are very bigger which is
very difficult to carry.
2G (2nd Generation) :
The 1G network was not perfect, but it remained until 1991, when it was replaced with 2G. This new
mobile network ran on digital signal, not analogue, vastly improving its security and capacity. On
2G, users could send SMS and MMS messages (although slowly and often without success), and
when GPRS was introduced in 1997, users could receive and send emails on the move.

Features of 2G (2nd Generation):

o Shifted from analog to digital.

o It supported voice and SMS both.
o Supported all 4 sectors of the wireless industry namely Digital cellular, Mobile Data,
PCS, WLAN,
o Moderate mobile data service.
o 2G WLAN provided a high data rate & large area coverage.
o Speed:- 64 kbps.
2.5G came after 2G which used the concept of GPRS. Streaming was also introduced and mail
services too. Then came 2.75G or EDGE which was faster in providing services than 2.5G. It gave
faster internet speed up to 128kbps and also used edge connection.

Drawbacks of 2G Technology
o It needs strong network coverage for data transmission.
o Even though it helps in sending messages, it cannot handle videos for transmission.
3G (3rd Generation) :
Third-generation mobile networks are still in use, but normally, when the superior 4G signal fails.
3G revolutionized mobile connectivity and the capabilities of cell phones. Compared to 2G, 3G was
much faster and could transmit greater amounts of data. This means that users could video call, share
files, surf the internet, watch TV online, and play games on their mobiles for the first time.

Under 3G, cell phones were no longer just about calling and texting; they were the hub of social
connectivity.

Features of 3G (3rd Generation):

o The Internet system was improved.

o Better system and capacity.
o Offers high-speed wireless internet.
o The connection used was UMTS and WCMA.
o Speed:- 2mbps.

Drawbacks of 3G Technology
o The power consumption of using 3G technology is high.
o It provides a wider capacity for data transmission at a faster speed.
o The time taken to download via 3G is faster and more expensive to buy.
4G (4th Generation) :
The introduction of 4G went one step further than the revolutionary 3G.

It is five times faster than the 3G network – and can theoretically provide speeds of up to 100Mbps.
All mobile models released from 2013 onwards should support this network, which can offer
connectivity for tablets, laptops, and smartphones.

Under 4G, users can experience better latency (less buffering), higher voice quality, easy access to
instant messaging services and social media, quality streaming, and faster downloads.

Features of 4G (4th Generation):

o IP-based protocols.
o LTE (Long term evaluation) was mainly for the internet.
o Vo-LTE (Voice over LTE) is for both voice and the internet.
o Freedom and flexibility to select any desired service with reasonable QoS.
o High usability.
o Supports multimedia service at a low transmission cost.
o HD Quality Streaming.
o Speed:-100mbps.

Drawbacks of 4G technology
o It provides costlier hardware and infrastructure setup.
o Due to the high data rate speed, the battery usage is less.
5G (5th Generation) :
It is yet to come in many countries but here are some notable points about 5G.
The network has arrived and has been largely welcomed by the mobile industry. The network has
changed more than our mobile use and affects how we connect our devices to the internet. The
improved speed and the massive network capacity have developed new IoT trends, such as smart
cities, healthcare, IoT in the home or office and connected cars.

5G can theoretically have a download speed 20x faster than 4G and boasts a very low latency
compared to its predecessor. This means the time delay for online gaming, video calls, and critical
mission applications will be significantly lower.

With almost a decade of 5G development left, the technology’s full potential is yet to come. The 5G
network will revolutionize how people live and work worldwide, so expect to see exciting changes in
the coming years.

Features of 5G (5th Generation):

o Higher data rates.

o Connectivity will be more fast and more secure,
o Data Latency will be reduced to a great level.
o Massive network capacity.
o It is 30 times faster than 4G.
o There would be more flexibility in the network.

Disadvantages of 5G
o Costly infrastructure, hardware
o Expensive mobile devices compatible with 4G required
o Time-consuming deployment and upgrade
