1. The quantity of people travelling by public transport in
Vietnam increased dramatically between 2005 and
2009, from almost 4.5 million people (MP) to nearly 8.8
MP – a huge growth of approximately two times.

8.8 MP between 2005 and 2009 (S+V, V-ing).
LINE GRAPH : 1. TRENDS //// 2. DEGREES OF CHANGES//// 3. MAKE COMPARISONS.
The line graph reveals information on the quantity of CO2 emissions per person released in
the four selected countries in Europe (The UK, Sweden, Italy and Portugal) during the 40
years 1967-2007. Units are measured in metric tonnes (MT).
From an overall perspective, there was a significant growth in the quantity of CO2
emissions in Sweden and Portugal after 40 years 1967-2007, whereas the corresponding
figures of the UK and Sweden decreased at the same time (TRENDS-OVERVIEW). By 1967,
the figure given for the UK appeared to be by far the largest one, with almost 10.8 MT
which was followed by that of Sweden and Italy. Actually, these figures were found to be
about 8.7 MT and roughly 4.2 MT, respectively. Nevertheless, Portugal seemed to be a
country having by far the lowest quantity of releasing CO2 emissions per person, with
approximately 1.3 MT.
Interestingly, the UK’s figure was consistently determined to be the highest one among the
four chosen countries in terms of CO2 emissions within 40 years 1967-2007, although there
was a substantial decrease in this figure between 1967 and 2007, to about 8.7 MT.
Conversely, the figure observed for Portugal went up dramatically across the 40 years
1967-2007, to approximately 5.5 MT – a huge growth of almost four times.
It is interesting to note that Sweden’s figure grew moderately in the first 10 years 1967-
1977, to nearly 10.2 MT but later declined dramatically in the next 30 years, to about 5.5
MT by 2007, being the same as that of Portugal (S+V, V-ing). In comparison with the
rest/remaining country, Italy’s figure rose significantly within 40 years, to about 7.8 MT by
2007, standing at the second highest country of releasing CO2 emissions per person (S+V,V-
ing)
The line graph reveals information on the
consumption of fish and three selected kinds of
TASK 1 – HOMEWORK
meat (Beef, Lamb and Chicken) in a European
country during the 25 years 1979-2004. Units
are measured in grams per person per week
(gpw).
From an overall perspective, there was a
significant increase in the consumption of
chicken across the 25 years 1979-2004, whereas
the corresponding figures of Beef, Lamb and
Fish decreased at the same time (TRENDS-
OVERVIEW SENTENCE). By the year 1979, the
figure given for Beef appeared to be by far the
largest one among the four chosen types of
food, with about 220 gpw which was followed
by that of the similar level of both Lamb and
Chicken, with almost 150 gpw. Nevertheless,
Fish seemed to be a type of food having the
lowest quantity, with roughly 65 gpw.
Surprisingly, Chicken’s increased dramatically
throughout the whole 25 years 1979-2004,
rising from about 150 gpw to nearly 250 gpw – a
huge growth of almost 1.5 times (S+V, V-ing).
Conversely, the figure recorded for Fish was
consistently determined to be the lowest one
within 25 years 1979-2004. Actually, this was
found to be well under 70 gpw, ranging from
about 50 gpw to almost 60 gpw (S+V, V-ing).
It is interesting to note that the consumption of
Beef decreased substantially in the first 5 years
1979-1984, from about 220 gpw to nearly 170
gpw but later increased slightly to about 180
gpw by the year 1989. After that, this declined
significantly to its lowest level, at about 110
gpw in 2004. In comparison with the remaining
type of food, Lamb’s figure fell considerably and
constantly within 25 years, to about 75 gpw by
2004.
IMPORTANT CONNECTING SENTENCES MUST BE USED TO DESCRIBE TWO SUBSEQUENT
TIME PERIODS:
1. The figure given for Beef decreased substantially between 1979 and 1984, from
about 220 grams per person per week (gpppw) to almost 170 gpppw. After that, it
increased slightly to almost 180 gpppw by the year 1989.
1.1. The figure given for Beef decreased substantially between 1979 and 1984,
from almost 220 gpppw to approximately 170 gpppw which was followed by a slight
increase to roughly 180 gpppw by the year 1989.
1.2. The figure given for Beef decreased substantially between 1979 and 1984,
from just 220 gpppw to about 170 gpppw but later increased slightly to almost 180
gpppw in 1989.
2. Lamb’s figure dropped considerably during the first 5 years 1979-1984, from
approximately 150 gpppw to nearly 110 gpppw. Then it continued to decline gently
to almost 105 gpppw by 1989.
2.1. Lamb’s figure dropped considerably during the first 5 years 1979-1984, from
approximately 150 gpppw to about 110 gpppw then continued its downward trend
to almost 105 gpppw by 1989.
3. The quantity of people using the Internet in Vietnam increased dramatically
between 2005 and 2015, from about 4.5 million people (MP) to just 8.8 MP. Then it
continued to rise slightly to almost 9.5 MP by 2018.
3.1. The quantity of Internet users in Vietnam increased dramatically between 2005 and
2015, from almost 4.5 MP to nearly 8.8 MP then continued its upward trend to about
9.5 MP by 2018.
4. The percentage of people watching TV in Vietnam increased dramatically between
2005 and 2012, from about 6.5 MP to nearly 10.8 MP. After that, it maintained at
this level until 2015.
Maintained at this level = remained stable at this level = remained constant at this
level = remained unchanged at this level = stabilised at this level.
A stability = a plateau.
4.1. The percentage of TV viewers in Vietnam increased dramatically throughout the
years 2005-2012, from approximately 6.5 MP to almost 10.8 MP before maintaining at
this level until 2015.
