(ADM) Module on Sports Officiating: Basketball!

used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create

II. Content/Topic Sports Officiating: Basketball

This module introduces you to the world of sports officiating; its basics which include
both personal and professional qualities that a sports official should possess. This
will encourage you to learn and question the sport-related practices that will help
you improve your fitness, management skills and productive behavior like fairness,
teamwork, discipline, good judgment and truthfulness.

Hand signals from basketball referees can seem complicated because there
are so many. Whether you are a referee, parent, player, commentator or just a game
student, this referee's hand signaling guide will help you understand better the hand
signals that referees use at the basketball court (Hull, 2013).

What is It

Basketball Official

An official in basketball is a person responsible for spotting any rule violations


and enforcing the appropriate penalties in basketball. Officials are vitally important
to any basketball game, as they help to ensure a level playing field that prevents
either team from having an unfair advantage. As in most sporting competitions,
basketball employs officials to control the flow of the game and enforce the rules
(Wikipedia, 2020).

Qualities of an Officiating Official:

An official's role in any sports is very crucial. He determines the failure


performance of a given physical activity. Therefore, aspiring officials must possess a
few qualities to fulfill the aim of making a satisfactory, complain-free, unbiased, and
productive game.

This is the QUALITIES OF AN OFFICIATING OFFICIALS must have:


1. Physical Qualities- Physical fitness is the capacity of an individual to perform
his or her daily tasks without undue fatigue and still has extra energy to
recreation and emergency.
2. Emotional Qualities -Emotional attributes that an officiating official should
possess include confidence. It is having belief in oneself.
3. Mental Qualities- Mental toughness is the term used to refer to all of the
qualities pertaining to one’s mental preparations in officiating a game.
4. Social Qualities- Social qualities refer to the ability to deal with others at any
given situations.
Referees Hand Signals for Basketball:

The role of the official of basketball is not only to make judgment calls on what
happens during the game, but also to make sure that players, coaches, and
scorekeepers understand what those calls are. That's why referees in basketball use
hand signals to signify such fouls or violations. Understanding these hand signals
can also help viewers understand what's happening during the game

Time Management Signals


These officiating basketball hand signals are used to communicate between
the referee and the timekeeper in order to notify the starting and stopping of the
clock.

Start Clock – Beginning with one hand raised
above head, the start of the clock is indicated by
dropping the raised hand directly towards the
floor.

Jump Ball – When both players have control over the


ball at the same time, it is indicated by both thumbs
pointing upwards with arms extended.

Substitution – If a substitute player wishes to enter


the game it is indicated by having one hand facing the
timekeeper, raised in a “stop” manner, and the other
hand waving the substitute player into the game.

Basketball Foul Signals


When a player commits a personal foul, the referee will give a specific signal
to indicate the type of foul and which player has committed the foul.

Blocking – If a defensive player commits a blocking


foul the official will have both hands, in fists,
touching his hips, and his elbows in tight against his
body.

Holding – The holding signal is made by having one


arm extended upwards in front of the face, and the
other hand grabbing the wrist.

Intentional Foul – When a player commits an
intentional foul, the official will put both arms above
his head and cross them

Technical Foul – To signal a technical foul has
occurred the referee will place both his hands in front
of him and put them in the formation of a letter “T”.

Basketball Foul Signals


Double Foul – If two players have committed a foul
at the same time, the referee will put both hands, in
fists, extending out towards the sides.

Illegal Hand Use – An illegal hand use foul is signaled


by the official putting both of his hands in front of him,
at waist level, and grabbing one of his wrists with the
other hand.

Pushing – To signal a pushing foul, the official will


have both hands extended straight in front of him, with
his palms facing outward.

Basketball Violation Hand Signals
A violation is a rule which is broken, but it does not result in a player picking
up a personal foul. The other team is awarded possession of the ball.

Traveling – When a player has committed a traveling


violation, the official will signal it by placing both of his
hands in front of him and moving them in a circle.

Double Dribble – The official will signal a double


dribble violation has been committed by putting both
of his hands in front of him, with palms down, and
alternating them up and down, as if dribbling a
basketball.

Carrying or Palming – In order to signal a palming


or carrying violation, the referee will have one hand at
the side, flipped over from palm up to palm down.

Kicking the Ball – When a player kicks the ball, the


referee will have one foot raised in front.

Five-Seconds – In order to signal a five-second


violation, the official will have five fingers raised with
arm extended upward.

What I Have Learned

1. Basketball an official (usually called a referee) enforces the rules and


maintains order in the game.
2. The role of an official is very crucial in a sporting endeavor. He defines the
success of failure of a certain physical activity.
3. The qualities of an officiating officials are physical, emotional, menta, and
social.
4. Basketball official’s job is not only to make judgment calls on what
happens during the game but also to make sure players, coaches and the
scorekeepers understand what those calls are. That’s why basketball
