The Greek City States
Just as the city states fought each other, so different political ideas were fought over
within the city states. Each was ruled in a different way. People talked about different
sorts of government and argued over which was the best, so Greek city states often
changed the person who was in charge and the way the state was run. Among the
different methods were aristocracy, and democracy.

The Ancient Greeks lived in many different city states. Each state traded with its neighbors,
and many distant countries. The two most powerful alliances were the Athenian League
and the Spartan Alliances. Just as the city states fought each other, so different political
ideas were fought over within the city states. Each was ruled in a different way.
Laws decided by citizens votes. No full time army, trade with other city states and countries.
The city is more important than the individual. Intelligence, thought and ideas are best. All

males from 7-30 serve in the army all year round. Trade forbidden, strict laws made by the
kings. The other was landlocked, inward looking, nervous. The other was near the sea,
outward looking adventurous.
