T
he random name tables in Xanathar's Guide are a very
useful addition, but if you were confused or frustrated
to see that it includes hundreds of first names from a
dozen distinct human cultures, but not even a single
surname for any of them, then this document is for
you!
Where possible I sourced real names from era-
appopriate data, but many ancient cultures just didn't use anything
we would equate with a surname. In those cases I either used
modern surnames from the region, or included something
approximate to a surname, so there is at least one additional table
for each human culture listed in Xanathar's Guide to Everything.
While researching this document it became apparent that the
"Polynesian" table needed to be expanded, to better represent the
vast area and variety of peoples the region covers.

Arabic Nisba
Arabic names are traditionally composed from five distinct elements; The nisba can be derived from a persons place of birth, origin,
the ism, kunya, nasab, laqab, and nisba. residence, religious sect, tribe, family, or other affiliation. Also
A name usually consists of an ism, and one or more of the other occasionally from a trade or profession.
elements, any or all of which may be used to refer to a person, A nisba is almost always preceded by the definite article, eg: al-
depending on the situation. For example: Khabaz; "the baker", al-Tahiri; "of (the tribe) Tahir", al-Isfahani; "of

Nura Tawll bint Jalal ibn Fayez

A person may have more than one nisba, in which case the order

Ism prefix it with "al-", eg: al-Khabaz; "the baker", al-Tajir; "the merchant",
al-Bahar; "the sailor", etc.
The ism is the name given at birth, usually an Arabic word whose
meaning signals the hoped-for character of the person. eg: Nura; Location Nisba: Prefix the names of cities and regions in your
campaign setting with "al-" and add an "i" to the end, eg; al-Calimporti,
"light", Jalal; "greatness", Fayez; "victory". al-Ormpuri, al-Shaari, al-Mirabari, etc.

34 al-Hawajiri
The kunya is often the name of a person's first-born child, prefixed by 35 al-Hilali
Abu (father) or Umm (mother), eg: Umm Ahmad; "the mother of 1 al-Abbasi
36 al-Humaydahi
Ahmad", and is used as a sign of respect or reverence. 2 al-Ajmani
However it can also be a metaphorical or ironic byname, eg: Abu 3 al-Amelai
37 al-Jabari
al-Fayez; "the father of victory;" (the victorious), Umm al-Dawaniq; 38 al-Jaidi
"the mother of pennies" (the miserly). Abu Bakr; "the father of the 4 al-Anazahi
camel foal" (kind to camels). 5 al-Aqeeli
39 al-Jalafi
When used as part of a person's full name, the kunya precedes the 6 al-Asadi
40 al-Jiburi
ism. 41 al-Judhami
7 al-Atiyahi
Either roll on the Arabic name table in Xanathar's Guide, or translate an
42 al-Jumahi
8 al-Awazemi
English word into Arabic, and prefix the result with Abu or Umm, as 43 al-Jushami
9 al-Baggarai
appropriate. 44 al-Kaabi
10 al-Bahilai
45 al-Karimi
Nasab 11 al-Balawii
46 al-Kathiri
The nasab is a list of a persons male ancestors, usually just the 12 al-Balharethi
47 al-Kendahi
father and grandfather, but it could be a long chain of names for 13 al-Bariqi
someone in an important family. 14 al-Buainaini
48 al-Khalidi
They are all prefixed by ibn (son), except for women, who add the 49 al-Khashami
prefix bint (daughter) to just their fathers name, eg: bint Jalal ibn 15 al-Darodi
Fayez; "the daughter of Jalal who was the son of Fayez". 16 al-Dawasiri
50 al-Khawlani
The nasab follows the ism. 51 al-Khazraji
17 al-Dhafeeri
52 al-Kinanahi
Roll on the Arabic male name table in Xanathar's Guide as many times 18 al-Dhubyani
53 al-Lakhmi
as the person's importance dictates, and prefix each name with ibn (or 19 al-Fahami
bint for a womans father). 54 al-Maadeedi
20 al-Farahidi
55 al-Makhzumi
21 al-Fazarai
Laqab 56 al-Maliki
22 al-Gaini
The laqab is a byname, usually descriptive of some quality the person 57 al-Manaseeri
has (or would like to have), eg: al-Rashid; "the rightly-guided", al- 23 al-Gashaami
Tawll; "the tall", al-Basil; "the brave". 24 al-Ghaithi
58 al-Mehrii
These laqab follow the ism and precede the nasab. 59 al-Mukhtari
There is also a religious form of laqab which is "Abd" (servant of) 25 al-Ghamidi
60 al-Murrahi
plus one of the 99 names of God, eg; Abd al-Rahman; "the servant of 26 al-Ghassani
the Merciful". The feminine form of this laqab is "Amat", eg; Amat al- 27 al-Ghifari
61 al-Mustafai
Rahman; "the (female) servant of the Merciful". These laqab are used 62 al-Mutayri
in the place of an ism, eg; Abd al-Rahman ibn Idris ibn Sinan. 28 al-Hakami
63 al-Nabhani
29 al-Hakli
It wont be grammatically correct, but to make your own laqab 64 al-Nadiri
30 al-Hamidai
bynames, it's probably easiest to just translate an English word into 65 al-Najjari
31 al-Hammyari
Arabic, then prefix it with "al-". eg; al-Rashid; "the rightly-guided", al- 66 al-Nawfali
Tawll; "the tall", al-Basil; "the brave". 32 al-Harithi
