SECTION 16114
CABLE TRAYS

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

To be read in conjunction with Division - General Requirements, and Conditions of Contract.

1.2 DESCRIPTION

A. DESIGN CRITERIA:

Select the correct grade of cable tray to meet the Specification and MEW
Regulations.

B. RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE:

Wires and Cables : Section 16120


Electrical Distribution System : Section 16425,16300
LV structured cabling : Section 16740 and others.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 CABLE TRAYS:

A. CABLE TRAYS:

Perforated, heavy duty, Returned flanged type, not less than 1.6mm thick , in 2.5m
lengths HOT DIP galvanized after completion of bending and drilling, complete with all
necessary purpose made bends, tees, supports and the like. Width shall be such as
to permit adequate access for installation and maintenance of cables.

All the cable tray sizes are subject to the Number of cables in each cable trays with
minimum distances between adjacent cables and complying to MEW regulations for
Cable tray sizes requirement, as refer to the cable routing drawings.

B. CABLE FIXINGS:

1. Cables shall be tied to trays with approved nonferrous straps, (such as PVC
sheathed aluminum), profiled to hold cables to tray.
2. Cable cleats, saddles and straps shall comply with cable manufacturer's
recommendations and shall be compatible with the cable tray finish and cable
sheathing.
3. All the cable tray accessories such ac bends, joints, couplers etc shall be
factory fabricated and from single source supply only.
4. All the cable tray supporting channels, Angles, Bolt nuts etc. should be hot dip
galvanized only.
5. All the exposed Cable trays shall be provided with Hot dip galvanized Sun
shade covers, as per Mew regulations.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSTALLATION:

A. GENERALLY:

1. Leave a minimum 25mm space behind installed runs of cable trays.


2. Install trays to give direct support to cables without the use of cleats or
saddles.
3. Do not install vertical runs of tray along the line of vertical expansion joints in
structure.
4. Coordinate layout of cable tray with other services to ensure that there is
no conflict.

B. JOINTING:

1. Joint cable tray and accessories in accordance with manufacturer's


recommendations.
2. Joint with mushroom head roofing bolts, nuts and washers.
3. Joint galvanized trays with galvanized or sheradized steel bolts, nuts and
washers. Do not use brass.
4. If manufacturer's recommendations preclude the use of bolts, obtain approval
of jointing method before ordering.
5. Where horizontal runs cross expansion joints, cut the tray at the joint and joint
with bolts nuts and washers in elongated holes allowing 10mm minimum
lateral movement.
6. Avoid mid span joints.

C. SUPPORTING:

Install fixings and supports:

a) At 1200mm centres.
b) 150mm from bends, tees, intersections and risers.
c) As close as practicable to joints.
d) Each side of expansion joints.
E) All the supports to the cable trays shall be Hot dip galvanized only.

D. EARTHING:

1. Cable trays and accessories shall be:

a) Electrically and mechanically continuous throughout their length; and


b) Bonded to earth continuity system.

2. Bond trays carrying MV cables to earth with 25 x 3mm tinned copper tape.

3.2 CLEANING AND ADJUSTMENT:

A. MAKING GOOD:

Galvanized trays: make good with a zinc rich epoxy or other approved material.
