Speaker 1
My favorite possession has to be the present my parents gave me when I passed my exams
last year. I wasn’t expecting anything, which is why it’s so precious to me, even better than
the present my boyfriend gave me. I know we shouldn’t wear jewelry to school but I wear it
under my blouse so no one can see it.

Speaker 2
My last holiday was brilliant. It was the first time I went away with friends and not with my
family and the first time I flew in an airplane. We spent a lot of time by the sea and even went
on a boat to visit the local islands. It was quite scary because the waves were huge, but it
was OK in the end.

Speaker 3
This summer my parents rented an apartment on the beach. We spent two weeks
sunbathing, swimming and basically relaxing. It was fantastic. My dad’s a really good cook,
so he prepared some great meals with locally caught fish while mum had to wash all the
dishes.

Speaker 4
I don’t think wild animals should be kept in zoos. They need space and freedom. We went on
a school trip to our local zoo last week and I got really upset when we saw the dolphins doing
a show. I know they look as if they’re enjoying themselves but I’m sure they aren’t.

Speaker 5
I really love it when my cousin David comes to visit us. He always makes my sister and me
laugh with his crazy jokes. Some of them are a bit weird but he and I have the same sense of
humor, so I spend most of my time laughing when he’s around.

1. Who gave Speaker One her favorite possession?

2. How did Speaker Two go on holiday?

3. Who did the cooking on Speaker Three’s holiday?

4. What kind of show upset Speaker Four?

5. Who has the same sense of humor as Speaker Five?

PART IV. Reading

10. Read the text about favorite possessions. Are the statements true (T), false
(F) or doesn’t say (DS)? _____/5

Favorite possessions

Maria,
When I was 12, I went to Italy to visit my grandparents. It was the first time I’d been
away on my own, so everything was really exciting. They live in Venice, so they took
me to Murano one day and they bought me a small glass bottle to remind me of my
trip. It doesn’t look very special as it’s very simple, but I love it.

Simon
I never win any prizes for my schoolwork but there is one thing I’m good at and that’s
swimming. I practice every day before school and every weekend too. Last year I
was in the national under-16 team, and we came first so my favorite possession is
the gold cup I won!

Lisa
My mother bought me a pair of red shoes a couple of years ago and I just love them.
I always wear them when I have exams, and I know it sounds crazy, but they bring
me good luck. My friends laugh at me, but I think my shoes are special.

1. Maria travelled to Italy alone. T / F / DS

2. Maria’s bottle was expensive. T / F / DS

3. Simon is the best student in his class. T / F / DS

4. Simon is 15 years old. T / F / DS
