The document is an examination paper for the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education in Physics, covering various topics including electrostatics, thermometer construction, and motion. It consists of three items that require students to explain electrostatic principles, construct a thermometer using available materials, and analyze the motion of a taxi and police car. Each item is compulsory and carries equal scores, with specific tasks and instructions provided for each scenario.

PHYSICS P510/1
END OF TERM EXAMINATIONS 2025
INSTRUCTIONS:

 All items are compulsory

 All items carry equal scores
 Start each Item on a new page

TIME: 2:30 hrs

ITEM ONE

During a Physics laboratory session at KIU High School, a student, Musa, rubs a glass rod with a silk
cloth and then brings it near a neutral metal sphere hanging from an insulating thread without
touching it. Musa observes that the metal sphere is attracted to the glass rod.

Later, Musa touches the sphere with the rod, and after separating them, the sphere is no longer
attracted but repelled by the glass rod.

Task:
Using the principles of electrostatics, explain:

(a) Why the metal sphere is attracted to the rod before contact.
(b) Why it repels the rod after contact.
(c) If Musa wants to confirm the type of charge acquired by the sphere after contact with the
glass rod. He uses a gold-leaf electroscope in the lab. Describe:
I. The procedure Musa should follow to determine the nature of the charge on the sphere
using the electroscope.
II. The observations he should expect if the sphere has acquired a positive charge.

ITEM TWO

At a village clinic, where you went for Christmas holidays, it is discovered that all the thermometers
around are not in a good working condition unfortunately, the thermometers are urgently needed
for a better prescription. Fortunately, the hospital has the following material present.

 A clear plastic bottle

 Coloured water and alcohol
 A transparent straw
 Ruler and a ream of paper
 Basin with hot water and cold water
0
The clinic management plans to provides 2 litres of hot water at 45 C at the maternity ward for
o
bathing newly born babies. The water at the clinic taps is always maintained at 10 C and according
to the doctors, a newly born baby should bath 3litres of water at exactly 30oC
TASK:
As a learner of physics,

(a) Use the available thermometer to construct a thermometer that shall be used for a mean
while at the hospital.
(a) Ascertain whether the water provided by the hospital board satisfies the doctor’s
recommendations and then advise them on the hotness of water that should be supplied to
the maternity ward

ITEM 3

An overloaded taxi traveling at a constant speed of 90 km/h overtakes a stationary traffic police car.
Two seconds later, the police car sets off in pursuit, accelerating at a uniform rate of 6 m/s². By the
time all this is happening, you’re standing on top of a building with your friends enjoying the drama
unfold.

Task

As a physics learner,

(a) Help your friends know how far does the traffic car travels before catching up with the taxi
(b) For any equations used above, show whether they are dimensionally consistent
