Hupp Motor Car Corporation Detroit, Mich. 24 HUPMOBILE MAINTENANCE MANUAL NOVEMBER. 1925 ONE FRONT TIRE WEARS RAPTDLY SERIES R When 2 cor is operated axtensively with only the driver, due to the uneven distribotion of weight, the right front tire is apt to wear more rapidly than the left one. Check front wheel toe in, should not be aver 3/16 of one inch under these conditions. Interchange right and left front tires. Check air pressurs. See thet it ie up to standard and examine ateering Imuckles and front arle for being bent. Check steering Imuckle arms to determine if they are in their correct positions when wheela are streight. These should be ghecked by comparing them with new knuckles, or with kruckles on another car, The wheel alignment in the straight positicn may be correct but on & turn a bent arm causes rapid weer. The outer wheel must operate on a different radius. NOIST REAR AXLE Cars Under R-160,397. Tn some cases the noise seemingly in rear axle, is caused entirely by the action of tires on road pavement. This can be checked by installing, a5 a test, four rib cord tires. 1. Check lubricant of differential and pinion for proper emount and being frea from dirt. 2. See that wheel bearings. pinion bearings and differential bearings are in good condition. 3. Inspect ring gear and pinion gear: Finion shaft should have .006 to .010 of one inch end play. 4, Do not shift adjustment of gear or zinion unless cer kes been driven over 3000 miles. Thay are 3-1/2% nickle, very hard and may require this amount of service to wear in. 6. Free Wheeling Hupmobile’s Free Wheeling is a separate unit attached to the rear of the transmission and controlled by a push-pull control on the dash. When this control is “in” the car is in Free Wheeling in all forward gears. When the control is “oul,” the car is in conventional gear. To shift from Free Wheeling to conven- tional, release the clutch, depress push button in center of control knob with thumb, pull out knob. To shift from conventional to Free Wheeling. take foot off accelerator, depress push button in center of control knob and push knob all the way in.
