II. Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question
SAFETY AND THE CITY
What are the factors that help us decide whether a city is a good place to live or not? It certainly should have all
the modern amenities (16) LIKE schools, hospitals, banks and entertainment facilities that you‟d expect to find
in a large urban centre. But if you have (17) EVER lived in a big city, you‟ll know that one of the most
important factors is safety. Research into safety and fear in cities (18) FOCUSES on factors such as how
frequently accidents take place as well as how high the crime rate is in order to rank them on the safe or
dangerous (19)SCALE/LEVEL . But even people who have never been the victims of crime still have feelings
of (20FEAR /TERROR in the most „dangerous‟ cities. If you find yourself (21) IN a panic every time you‟re
alone at a bus stop or when you are walking down an (22) EMPTY city street at night, then maybe you
(23NEED/ HAVEto move to a safer city. In fact, people who (24) USEDto live in fear in their hometowns have
often experienced great lifestyle changes simply by moving to a safer city. There‟s no point (25) LIVING in a
bustling city if you fear for your life when you step outside. It‟s no (26) SURPRISEthat Luxembourg, or
Geneva and Zurich in Switzerland rate among the safest cities in Europe. But given that many people (27)
ASSOCIATE Ireland with civil unrest, it is encouraging to hear that Dublin has also been named one of
Europe‟s safest cities for visitors and (28)LOCALS . This is because the Irish are thought to be among the least
likely Europeans to get (29) INVOLVED in violent crimes. So, (30) IF you are thinking about moving city, give
serious consideration to Dublin.

III. Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question
In science, a theory is a reasonable explanation of observed events that are related. A theory often involves
an imaginary model that helps scientists picture the way an observed event could be produced. A good example
of this is found in the kinetic molecular theory, in which gases are pictured as being made up of many small
particles that are in constant motion.
A useful theory, in addition to explaining past observation, helps to predict events that have not as yet been
observed. After a theory has been publicized, scientists design experiments to test the theory. If observations
confirm the scientists' predictions, the theory is supported. If observations do not confirm the predictions, the
scientists must search further. There may be a fault in the experiment, or the theory may have to be revised or
rejected.
Science involves imagination and creative thinking as well as collecting information and performing
experiments. Facts by themselves are not science. As the mathematician Jules Henri Poincare said: "Science is

Page 3/4
built with facts just as a house is built with bricks, but a collection of facts cannot be called science any more
than a pile of bricks can be called a house.
" Most scientists start an investigation by finding out what other scientists have learned about a particular
problem. After known facts have been gathered, the scientist comes to the part of the investigation that requires
considerable imagination. Possible solutions to the problem are formulated. These possible solutions are called
hypotheses. In a way, any hypothesis is a leap into the unknown. It extends the scientist's thinking beyond the
known facts. The scientist plans experiments, performs calculations, and makes observations to test hypotheses.
For without hypotheses, further investigation lacks purpose and direction. When hypotheses are confirmed, they
are incorporated into theories.
