Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace

Who was Ada Lovelace?

She was the first to recognize that the machine had applications beyond pure
calculation and to have published what is recognized today as the first algorithm
intended to be processed by a machine, which is why she is considered the first
computer programmer.

Who was Ada Lovelace’s greatest influence?

Ada Lovelace’s mother was a mathematician and high educated. She taught Ada
mathematics and encouraged her to pursue a career in mathematics and science.
This was in part because Lady Byron feared Ada would inherit Lord Byron’s
‘insanity’ and illogical moods.

Besides from her mother, Ada Lovelace’s biggest influence was Charles Babbage.
Charles and Ada met in 1833 due to having a mutual friend. Ada was fascinated in
Charles’ invention and development of the Difference Engine. They sent letters
back and forth as Ada wanted to help develop the machine.

What is Ada Lovelace day?

To honor and celebrate her work and contribution to mathematics, Ada Lovelace
Day is celebrated annually on the 13th of October. Suw Charman-Anderson
founded Ada Lovelace Day in 2009, to celebrate and promote the achievements of
women in STEM. It also aims to raise awareness of contributions made to
technology, science, mathematics and engineering by women in the past.
