Superlative Adjectives in English

Superlative adjectives are used to compare three or more things, indicating the highest or lowest
degree of a quality. In English, superlatives are formed in different ways depending on the
adjective’s length.
Formation of Superlatives
1. One-syllable adjectives: Add -est
Tall → The tallest (He is the tallest player on the team.)
Fast → The fastest (This is the fastest car in the race.)

2. Two-syllable adjectives ending in -y: Change -y to -iest


Happy → The happiest (She is the happiest person I know.)
Easy → The easiest (This is the easiest test of the year.)

3. Adjectives with two or more syllables: Use the most before the adjective
Beautiful → The most beautiful (This is the most beautiful city in the country.)
Expensive → The most expensive (That hotel is the most expensive in town.)

4. Irregular superlatives:
Good → The best (This is the best restaurant in the area.)
Bad → The worst (That was the worst day of my life.)
Far → The farthest / The furthest (This is the farthest I have ever traveled.)
