Marking Scheme

An unexpected journey

Question 1:

(a) She was preparing for her exam.

(b) Carefree, laid back, easy going, casual, relaxed (any word from these words) (with explanation of the quote)

(c) i. Sara couldn’t ignore the sacrifices her parents had made to send her to university
ii. the weight of that responsibility made it hard for her to take a break.

(d) i. She kicked off her sandals


ii. flopped into the armchair

(e) It captures a very specific and intense experience. It refers to intense pressure of exams. Exams are stressful.
Last minute studying amplifies that pressure. The phrase also refers to a lack of control over time, with chance to
pause. Time went by quickly and reality seemed distorted.

(f) i. the ticket machine only accepted credit cards not cash
ii. they had to join a long cue at the ticket office

(g) i. the train was slow and made frequent stops picking up more and more passengers along the way
ii. Sara found herself pressed against standing passengers, feeling uneasy about the pickpockets.

(h) The crowded train, the rucksack disaster, the frantic rush to make it to the train (this text to be explained in their
own words)

Question 2:

(a) Zara felt embarrassed/ashamed about the miscalculation she had made about time.

(b) It creates a powerful effect of juxtaposing/ two contrasting emotions/ conflict and tension

Frustrated: feeling of being worn down in a difficult situation

Determined: however, conveys a strong will, resilience, and a refusal to give up.

A clear picture of oneself facing challenges with a resilient spirit, creating a sense of both vulnerability and
strength.

(c) Zara could not believe Sara giving such a reply/ it also shows they came from poor or middle-class families/
they could not afford taxis.

(d) Sara wanted to be quick at the same time she was being helpful to Zara
She didn’t want to miss the next train.

(e) Example: he sped off weaving recklessly through the traffic, narrowly avoiding pedestrians and parked cars
