"The gift of blood is the gift of life"
Imagine a world where every person in need of blood transfusion receives it instantly - a world, where
no one loses their life, simply because there was not enough blood available. This is not just a dream; it
is a reality we can create, if each one of us commits to donating blood, at least, once a year.
Good morning everyone! Today, I would like to talk about one of the most important donations one can
make. That is blood donation. This is an act of kindness that has the power to save lives. By donating
blood just once a year, we can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of others.
Blood donation refers to a practice where people donate their blood to other people in need, so that it
helps them with their health problems. Blood is vital for life. You cannot live without it. If the body loses
blood in excessive amount, we can get deadly diseases and even die. But we are lucky to have blood
transfusion process that can help save the lives of the people. Blood donation, helps people to get the
blood they need through transfusion.
Every year, millions of lives are saved through blood transfusion. Every two seconds, someone in the
world needs blood. Accident victims, cancer patients, a mother undergoing childbirth, those undergoing
major surgeries and individuals with chronic illness rely on this precious resource. Donating blood saves
lives.
Donating blood is more than just an act of charity. It is a sign of humanity that unites people,
irrespective of cast, creed, religion and more. A single donation can save up to three lives. A mere act of
kindness can give hope; strength and a second chance to people you have a never even met.
However, only 3 percent of age eligible people donate blood yearly. Many people harbor
misunderstandings, that by donating blood, they might fall sick. But this is not true. Blood is
automatically regenerated by the body within a few weeks.
Furthermore, the process of donating blood is safe and quick. The entire process takes about an hour at
the benefits are long lasting. The blood donating centers follow strict protocols to ensure the safety of
both the donor and the recipient. Despite these, fear, myths or simply lack of awareness hold people
back.
There is no substitute for human blood. Blood and platelets, cannot be manufactured. Therefore, there
is no other source if the supply runs out. Also, blood cannot be stored for a long time, which is why
blood banks are in constant need of it. This makes every blood donation crucial. So it is imperative that
people, who meet the requirements, donate blood as often as possible. A person can donate blood
thrice in a year.
There are various health benefits of donating blood. It not only helps the receiver but also enhances the
health of the donor. Firstly, it offers a free health checkup to the donor which helps him to know about
his body. Blood donation, maintains a healthy iron level in the body. It also stimulates the production of
new blood cells, which improves the cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of heart diseases. So it's
a win-win situation; you take care of your health, while contributing a noble cause.
Moreover, blood donation can give you a sense of purpose and pride. It fosters a sense of community
and social responsibility. It brings people together for a common cause. This act of kindness inspires
others to do the same, creating a ripple effect that enhances the overall well, being of society. Blood
donation is so important that the world celebrates World Blood Donor day on 14 th June, every year to
raise awareness and promote blood donation.
If everyone made it a point to donate blood at least once a year, we could eliminate blood shortage
entirely. When you donate you not only give blood, you give life, hope and a second chance to someone
in need.
I would request you all, to donate blood more often. Let us all be the reason someone smiles, someone
survives and someone tribes.
Thank you.
