Volume 1 (Chapters 1–14)
Chapter 1
Mr. Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange, visits his landlord,
Heathcliff, at Wuthering Heights. Lockwood finds Heathcliff a mysterious,
brooding man and meets Joseph, a bitter old servant. The house feels dark, cold,
and unwelcoming. Lockwood is also introduced to Hareton Earnshaw, a rough but
handsome young man, and Catherine Linton, a haughty and unfriendly
woman. The relationships between them are unclear to Lockwood, who returns to
Thrushcross Grange both confused and intrigued.
Chapter 2
Lockwood returns to Wuthering Heights the next day but is caught in a snowstorm.
While seeking shelter inside, he faces more hostility. Catherine Linton, the young
woman, treats him with scorn. Hareton, despite his rough manners, seems oddly
interested in Lockwood's presence. Heathcliff, still unwelcoming, reluctantly
allows him to stay. Lockwood struggles to make sense of the relationships among
the residents, feeling as though he has walked into a place with a dark, untold
history.
Chapter 3
That night, Lockwood is given a room that Heathcliff had forbidden anyone from
entering. Inside, he finds old books with the name "Catherine Earnshaw"
scribbled in them. While sleeping, he experiences a terrifying dream of a
woman’s ghost—Catherine—scratching at the window, begging to be let in. He
screams, waking Heathcliff, who becomes distressed and pleads for Catherine’s
ghost to return to him. Lockwood, frightened and unwell, rushes back home,
more curious than ever about Wuthering Heights and its inhabitants.
Chapter 4
Back at Thrushcross Grange, Lockwood asks his housekeeper, Nelly Dean, about
the history of Wuthering Heights. Nelly begins the long story, explaining that
years ago, the Earnshaw family lived there. Mr. Earnshaw, the master of
Wuthering Heights, adopted a dark-skinned, orphaned boy from Liverpool—
Heathcliff. This angered Hindley, Earnshaw’s son, but Catherine, Earnshaw’s
daughter, quickly grew close to Heathcliff. Mr. Earnshaw favored Heathcliff,
deepening Hindley’s resentment.
Chapter 5
Mr. Earnshaw’s health declined, and he relied heavily on Heathcliff. Hindley grew
more bitter, but Catherine and Heathcliff remained inseparable. Before dying,
Mr. Earnshaw entrusted the family’s care to Hindley, who soon returned to
Wuthering Heights with his new wife, Frances.
Chapter 6
As master of Wuthering Heights, Hindley began mistreating Heathcliff, reducing
him to a servant. Meanwhile, Catherine and Heathcliff continued sneaking out
together. One night, they spied on Thrushcross Grange, where Edgar and
Isabella Linton lived. When their dog attacked Catherine, she was taken into
the Linton house, while Heathcliff was sent away like a beggar.
Chapter 7
Catherine returned weeks later, transformed into a proper lady after her stay
with the Lintons. She now enjoyed Edgar’s company, which infuriated
Heathcliff, who felt unworthy of her. Hindley continued treating Heathcliff like a
servant, making Heathcliff vow revenge.
Chapter 8
Hindley’s wife, Frances, died shortly after giving birth to their son, Hareton.
This drove Hindley into drunken despair, and Wuthering Heights began to fall
into disorder. Meanwhile, Edgar pursued Catherine, causing tension between her
and Heathcliff.
Chapter 9
Catherine confessed to Nelly that she loved Heathcliff but planned to marry
Edgar instead, believing he would secure her social status. However, Heathcliff
overheard only part of her conversation and left, heartbroken. Realizing her
mistake, Catherine fell into despair.
Chapter 10
Three years later, Heathcliff returned, mysteriously wealthy and refined, intent
on revenge. He stayed with Hindley, who was now a hopeless alcoholic.
Chapter 11
Heathcliff began courting Edgar’s sister, Isabella, knowing it would hurt Edgar
and Catherine. Catherine was furious and jealous but denied having feelings for
Heathcliff.
Chapter 12
Catherine fell into a feverish illness, growing emotionally unstable. Meanwhile,
Isabella became infatuated with Heathcliff.
Chapter 13
Edgar devoted himself to Catherine’s care, unaware that Isabella had eloped
with Heathcliff.
Chapter 14
Isabella wrote to Nelly, revealing that Heathcliff treated her cruelly, showing no
