STATEMENT OF PURPOSE FOR PHD IN THEORITICAL CONDENSED MATTER PHYSICS

I'm writing to say how interested I am in the Ph.D. program in Theoretical Quantum Condensed
Matter Systems at the University of Hamburg. I am certain that University of Hamburg is the best
place for me to further my academic and research career, and I am thrilled to be a part of your
academic community.

Curiosity about the central question in condensed matter physics, including Superconductivity, has
influenced my path towards a PhD in this field. I have a great interest in the theoretical and
experimental elements of condensed matter physics because of my academic background, which
includes a B.Sc. in Physics from Presidency University (2019–22) and an M.Sc. in Physics (2022–July
24) from Presidency University, West Bengal, India. I became very interested in high temperature
superconductors, quantum information theory, and 2D materials (graphene) throughout my
undergraduate and graduate studies because I thought these were important fields of study with a lot
of potential for societal effect.

I am attracted to the University of Hamburg because of its esteemed faculty, especially Professor Dr.
Tim O. Wehling, whose research in the field of condensed matter theory has focused on the different
aspects but I am excited about his research on LK-99 is not a superconductor, switching between Mott-
Hubbard and Hund physics and Symmetric Kondo lattice states in doped twisted Bilayer of Graphene.
I was go through the paper titled “No superconductivity in Pb9Cu1(PO4)6O found in orbital and
spin fluctuation exchange calculations” because It was in news and social media also that
Pb9Cu1(PO4)6O (aka LK-99) is room temperature superconductor. As a Physics student it is a very
exciting news for me but when I read the title of the paper it is also a disappointing and also a very
surprising thing. After reading the paper I understand that it is most probably an insulator for different
temperatures and the few similarities with Superconductors found in LK-99 is basically due to the
impurity CuS which is occurring during the synthesis process. While go through the paper I noticed in
“Discussion and Conclusion” section it is mentioned that FLEX is an approximate method which has
few shortcomings then I think that most probably this approximated method is not suitable for LK-99.
So, I am excited to do more research on LK-99 under your Supervision. I am also excited about Bilayer
Graphene. My interest about it grows when I helped one of my friend Neha Biswas in her Master’s
Thesis. Her project basically on monolayer of Graphene and how its properties changes when
impurities added to it. I think It's the ideal place for me to explore and develop my research interests
because of the collaborative atmosphere, cutting-edge research facilities, and university dedication to
innovation.

Although during my whole academic life I have no research experience but I am strongly motivated to
do research and grasp it as my career. My interest about this field has grown up when I firstly read
Superconductivity in my Bachelor’s course and my interest keep increasing about it how deeply I read
about Superconductors. I read research paper about many aspects of Physics but I have strong interest
on Superconductor and how to build a superconductor in room and higher temperature.
I am enthusiastic about the chance to interact with the varied international community in University
of Hamburg in addition to my academic and research interests. I assumed that discussing ideas and
experiences with professors and students from around the globe would broaden my understanding of
the field and aid in my personal development.

I also participated in Condensed Matter, Material Science and Statistical Physics

Symposium(CMMSSP). It is a two-day National Level Symposium which is organized by Presidency
University on 28th and 29th April. I am the member of the organizing committee. This Symposium
introduced many aspects of Condensed Matter Physics to me.

Finally, I would want to say how excited I am to start this life-changing path toward my PhD at the
University of Hamburg. I am sure that the goals and ideals of your institutions are in line with my
commitment, enthusiasm, and research potential. The chance to work with distinguished faculty
members and fellow academics to advance the fields of theoretical condensed matter systems excites
me. We will be able to make significant contributions to these fields.

I appreciate you taking a look at my application ahead of time. I'm excited about the potential to
become a part of the prestigious University of Hamburg community. Kindly reach out to me at

Yours Faithfully,
