A. NEW FEATURES

1. DRS 6.0 supports downloading of DDEC III, IV and V calibrations over an internet
connection as well as the current dialup and frame relay capability. To enable this
feature, please read the document titled “Selecting Server Connection Types in DRS 6.0”
that is contained on the DRS 6.0 CD.

2. Progressive Shift – high gear max rpm limit can be set to lower values than previously
available.

3. Complete instructions for reprogramming all DDEC/MBE ECUs are available on the
DRS 6.0 CD. It is recommended that you print all supporting documents for easy
reference.

B. MINIMUM HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR DRS 6.0


Before proceeding with the installation please verify that your PC meets or exceeds the
following minimum specifications:

Windows 2000 or XP 4x CD-ROM drive


Pentium II processor or better. An Internet connection, DDC Network
64 MB of RAM connection, or modem
40 MB of free hard disk space A functional serial communications port
Mouse or other pointing device 25-pin parallel port (printer port)

C. INSTALLING DRS VERSION 6.0 SOFTWARE

These installation instructions are written with D: as the CD-ROM drive; make certain you use
the proper drive letter designation for your computer system.

1. Insert the DRS Version 6.0 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.

2. If the CD does not begin to boot, click on “Start”, then “Run”. Enter “d:/autorun” where “d” is
your CD-ROM drive letter designation, then click the “OK” button (Figure 1).

3. After a brief moment the “Welcome to the DDEC Reprogramming System (DRS) for Windows
Version 6.0 CD-ROM Menu” screen will appear, a portion of which is displayed below (Figure 2).
Click on the “Install DRS 6.0 Now” link to begin the installation procedure.

4. Click the “Open” button on the screen displayed below (Figure 3.

5. You may receive the “Security Warning” screen displayed below. Click “Yes” to continue.

6. Read through the instructions on the “Welcome!” screen. (Figure 5) When finished, click the
Next button to proceed with the installation. After this screen, you can go back to previous screens
at any time by selecting the Back button.

7. If absolutely necessary, select the “Browse” button to select a different location where the
program will be installed, then select “ Next.” (We strongly recommend the default location.)
(Figure 6).

8. Click “Next” on the “Select Data Files Directory” screen (Figure 7).

9. Now the software is ready to begin copying files to your computer. Select “Next.” (Figure 8).

10. The DRS Software will begin to install into your computer. (Figure 9)

12. If your PC is running Windows 2000 or XP, you will receive the prompt shown below. Click
“OK” to continue. (Figure 11).

13. Click “OK” on the prompt box below to continue. Your computer will be restarted (Figure 12).

14. After rebooting, the “Comms Settings” window will appear. If you are using an older white
translator, select “Translator Box, COM X” for the Interface Hardware and set the baud rate to
“9600” (Figure 13). If you are using a Multilink translator, select “DDEC Multilink Translator,
COM X” and set the baud rate to “38,400” (Figure 14) then click the “OK” button to proceed.
DDEC V ECUs can also be programmed over the J1939 protocol if the vehicle is equipped with a
J1939 capable diagnostic connector or the ECU is being programmed on the bench (Figure 15).

15. The “Installation Completed” screen will appear after a few seconds. Click the “Finish” button to
complete the DRS software installation. (Figure 16)

F. ENTERING YOUR LOGON PARAMETERS INFORMATION.

1. Double-click on the “DDC Mainframe Communications” icon (Figure 1) on your desktop to


launch the engine calibration downloading utility associated with DRS 6.0 reprogramming
software.

2. Click on the “Update Logon Parameters” button at the bottom of the “Welcome Screen” (Figure
2).

3. The “Update Logon Parameters Dialog” will appear as below (Figure 3). If you use a standard
telephone line to dial-in to the DDC Server place a checkmark in the box labeled “Connect to
DDC Server via Dial-Up as needed” and select “DDC Dial” from the “Use the following Dial-Up
Networking connection” pull-down menu. Enter your logon parameter information into the
appropriate dialog boxes on the “Update Logon Parameters Dialog” screen. Note: if you wish to
connect to the DDC server via the internet, please read the document titled “Selecting Server
Connection Types in DRS 6.0” contained on the DRS 6.0 CD. This document provides a
procedure for testing your server connection via the internet.

4. Click the “Save” button on the “Update Logon Parameters Dialog” screen to save your logon
parameters information.

NOTE: If you are running Windows 2000 on your PC, you must follow the instructions on
the document titled “Setting up a Windows 2000 Dialup Connection” (found on the DRS
CD) in order to be able to dial-in to the DDC Enterprise Server to download calibrations.

5. The Installation of DRS 6.0 software has now been completed. Please consult the instructions
labeled “Using DDC Mainframe Communications to Download Calibrations from the DDC
Server" to download engine calibrations, or “Using Windows DRS Version 6.0 to to Reprogram
Detroit Diesel’s ECUs” for instructions on how to reprogram ECUs using this software.

G. UNINSTALLING DDEC REPROGRAMMING SYSTEM 6.0™

1. Click on “Start” then “Settings”, then “Control Panel”.


2. Double-click on the “Add/Remove Programs” icon.
3. Select “DDEC Reprogramming System” from the list of programs.
4. Click the “Add/Remove…” button.
5. Click the “Next” button in the dialog. Choose the “Automatic” option, then click “Next”
again the software will begin to uninstall.
6. Click “Yes to All” when you receive the prompt concerning removal of shared
components that are no longer in use.

H. NOTES ON KNOWN ISSUES

1. If you are installing this software on a Dell Latitude laptop, you MUST perform the
procedure described in the document titled "Optimizing Serial Port Communications with
DRS 6.0 and the DDEC Multilink Translator" which is included on the DRS 6.0 CD.

E. IF UNKNOWN ISSUES ARE ENCOUNTERED

1. Document the problem as thoroughly as possible

2. Report the issue to the DDC Software Support Team direct line at 313-592-5505,
Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST.

After business hours, weekends and holidays, please call the Customer Service Center at
313-592-5959 and request from the operator to contact the Distributor Support on-call
technician.
