INDUSTRY AND COMPANY PROFILE

INDUSTRY & PRODUCT AND USES

The promoters M/S Kunnathan Polymer Private Limited, a company registered under
the Indian Companies Act, 1956, propose for an expansion of the unit for manufacturing
Formalin and Resin it at Assamanoor, near to Perumbavoor

The unit has two division for manufacturing of formalin from Methanol and another
division for manufacturing of Resin using Formalin. The project report sets out the proposals
for setting up of the unit and analyses the results

PRODUCT AND USES

The product which are proposed to be manufacturing on setting up of the unit are
Formalin and Resin. The first product Formalin is a raw material as well as finished product
which has innumerable uses in industry. The main use of Formalin is as the solvent for the
paint industry. Formalin is used for the manufacture the base for the paint in which colour
pigments are added and mixed using laser technology to get the different coloured paints.
Another use is the raw material for resin industry. The main use of resin is in the plywood
industry. Resin used to bind the different layers of veneer and compressed with the help of
hot press plywood. They are Urea formaldehyde synthetic resin, phenol formaldehyde
synthetic resin, Melamine formaldehyde and CNS liquid resin.

Formalin as such is used as a preservative medium for medical for medical, bio-
technological and scientific purpose such is as preservation of dead bodies, fossils and

6
specimens etc. Another use of formalin is as the raw material of manufacturing colour dyes.
There are so many cottage industries using formalin as the raw material for the production of
organic and aromatic compounds for industrial purposes. The formalin division will supply
the necessary formalin to the resin division for the production of resin. The surplus
production in the formalin division if any, will be sold outside. The widespread development
of industries, offices, banks, colleges, schools, hospitals, show rooms and sales counters has
increased the demand for ply wood as a cheaper and almost an equivalent substitute for
natural wood. There are so many ply wood industries running in Kerala which requires resin
as a raw material in their manufacturing units.

THE PRODUCTION

FORMALIN

The process of manufacturing formalin consists of mixing Methanol, water and air and
then reacting over silver granule catalyst bed in a particular method. The reaction starts when
the temperature reaches at 75’e and then the temperature is gradually increased to 600’c to

7
700’c. The exit gas from the reactor outlet containing formaldehyde and un-reacted methanol
are lead to absorption tower where formaldehyde and methanol are dissolved in water
forming a solution of formaldehyde which is know as formalin is taken to final storage tank.

UREA FORMALDEHYDE SYNTHETIC RESIN

Formalin is mixed with Urea in the reaction vessel and heated in presence of catalysts.
Excess water in the vessel is distilled over by external heating as a result of which the final
product of 50% solids is obtained. The resin formation is the result of two different chemical
reactions. Addition of formaldehyde in formalin with urea to from a simple compound
product to from a polymer which results the formation of synthetic resin. These reaction
mixture. The main catalysts are citric acid and caustic soda

The know how of production Is available. The suppliers of machinery are also expected
to impart the know how and training in the operation while trail running the plant. Further,
the connections through whom the products are to sold will also pass on their technical
specifications to maintain quality of the product. Technically qualified and skilled hands will
operate the machinery and supervise all stages of the production process which will ensure

analyze data for the purpose of finding answers to research questions. Research methodology
encompasses various aspects of research design, data collection, data analysis, and
interpretation of results. There are several types of research methodologies, including

to understand the experiences and perspectives of individuals. It is usually conducted
through interviews, Focus groups, and observation

2. Quantitative research : Quantitative research is focused on the collection and analysis

of numerical data, It is often conducted through surveys, experiments, and statistical
analysis

3. Mixed methods research : Mixed methods research combines both qualitative and
quantitative approaches, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the
research problem

RESEARCH DESIGN

15
“A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and analysis of data
in a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in
procedure”.
The researcher used Descriptive research design, because it helps to describe a
particular situation prevailing within a company. Descriptive study was necessary to ensure
the complete interpretation of the situation and to ensure minimum bias in the collection of
data.

UNIVERSE OF THE STUDY

In any statistical investigation the researcher will study the various characteristics of
individual or items of a particular group. This group of individual under study is known as
the population or universe. Therefore universe or population is the set of all items in any field
of enquiry.

SAMPLING METHOD
Simple Random sampling is used for the process of data collection. It is the basic
sampling technique where we select a group of subject (a sampling) for the study from a large
group (a population). Each individual is chosen being included in the sample. Every possible
sample given size has the same chance of selection

SAMPLING PERIOD
The time taken to complete the project is the sampling period. In this study the
sampling period is one month.

SAMPLE SIZE
For a research study to be perfect the sample size selected should be optimal i.e. it
should neither be excessively large nor too small. Hence the sample size selected for the
study was 50 employees of “Kunnathan Polymers Pvt. Ltd’’.

DATA COLLECTION
Tools Used
The main tool used for data collection is structured questionnaire.
Sources of Data

for this study is collected from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data are those

16
who are collected for the first time. The secondary data are those which have already been
passed through statistic
Primary Data
This data are collected a fresh and for the first time and thus happen to be original in
character. Primary data can be collected through interview, questionnaire, schedule, etc., for
this study the primary data collected through questionnaire.
Secondary Data
Secondary data means data that are already available they refer to data which have
already been collected and analyzed by someone else. When the researcher analyzed
secondary data the researcher has to look into various sources. Here the secondary data are
collected through journals, text books, magazines, etc.
Data Analysis
The collected data is presented into pie diagrams, and bar diagrams. In pie diagram in
order to plot the respective pie chart, firstly data is grouped under their respective categories
and was then converted into percentage in case of pie chart. Percentages are often used in
data presentation for simplifying numbers, reducing all of them to 0 to 100 ranges.
