3 Read the text “Becoming a young entrepreneur” and circle the
correct answers (a–c).
Some of the most famous and profitable businesses in the world were
set up by students. Bill Gates began Microsoft while he was studying
at Harvard University. Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook when he
was a student at Harvard University and Sergey Brin and Larry Page
started Google when they were students at the University of Stanford.
Starting a business as a young entrepreneur can be an exciting new
adventure, and it will be easier than you think. You won’t need a
business degree or a lot of money from an investor when you set up a
business, but you will need to come up with an idea, especially if you
don’t have business experience, and find out as much information
about how to run your business as possible, so that you avoid
disappointment. Here are some tips for young businesspeople.
Do what you love. In your late teens or early twenties your thinking
will be fresh and energetic. Don’t be afraid to try something new. You
won’t be successful if you choose something you hate. You should
choose a business idea that is connected to your interests, so that you
get enjoyment from what you do.
Know what you want. Will you know what to do if your business
becomes really successful? Will you leave education or will your
business be just a side project? You’ll need to make that decision
before you become successful.
Insight Elementary 1
Manage your time. When you run a business and go to school at the
same time, it can be very difficult and stressful, but don’t give up.
You’ll need to have a diary for all your appointments and organize
your time wisely.
Use school resources. It can be an advantage being a student in
business, because you’ll have free computers and the internet, and
there’ll be people who might help you, too. Make the most out of what
is on offer while you are at school.
Find a mentor. A mentor is someone who is experienced and can
help you with your business ideas. It will probably be a local business
person who will help you understand the risks and challenges of
business and discuss your business ideas with you.
Now you’ll just have to think of that brilliant business idea!
