The Old Woman’s Luck
There was once an old woman. She made a small amount of money by helping
the farmers' wives in her village. She didn’t earn much. Sometimes, she would
get a plate of meat at one house and sometimes she would get a cup of tea
at another. Yet, the old woman always looked cheerful.
Late one evening as she was walking home, the old woman found a big,
black pot lying by the side of the road. “I would love to have that pot but
I have nothing to put in it,” she said. “Who could have left it here?” She looked
around for the person it belonged to but there was no one there.
“Maybe it will have a hole in it,” she said thoughtfully. “Yes, that
will be why they've left it lying here. Even if it does have a hole in
it, it will make a wonderful pot for a flower on the windowsill. I
think I'll take it home anyway.” She bent her stiff, old back and
lifted the lid to look inside.
“Goodness me!” she cried, jumping back to the other side of the
road. “It is filled to the top with gold pieces!”
