LE2- Unit 2- Population growth and factors impacting it

Learning experience description

Learning objective-

 Recognize where and when population has changed over the

past 2,000 years. (Orientation in space and time)

 Identify changes that allowed population to increase/decrease

at certain points in history.

Inquiry Question- what are the factors leading to changes in population

over time?

Entry Ticket- Recall the factors affecting population of a region from

yesterday's class. Can you list some?

This task will help you to understand that the rate of population growth
over time has not been constant because of factors that influence where,
when, and why population size changes.

Asynchronous Engagement-

Task instructions- In this task, you will watch the World Population video to
see a graphic simulation of human population growth over time and
answer questions about why population size has changed, where these
changes occurred, and what factors may have contributed to these changes.

The task details are explained as follows-

step 1--Understand the idea-

Human population growth has not been consistent over time. In the year 1
A.D., there were approximately 170 million people - We didn’t reach one
billion people until 1804. - In the year 2018, world population approximately
reached 7.6 billion which increased to 8 billion on 15th November 2022. It
continues to increase.

Step 2- Watch the film/graphic simulation as a class on World Population.

Your teacher will help you navigate through the simulation.

(worldpopulationhistory.org)
Exit Ticket- On Sticky notes, list down any factor over time that has
impacted the population size.

Homework in notebook- Read factors impacting Population change- The

main causes of a change in population size - Internet Geography

Step 2- Watch the film/graphic simulation as a class on World Population.

Your teacher will help you navigate through the simulation.

ask 1-- 20 mins- Synchronous lesson- NANO lesson by teacher on concept

of Population Growth.

Lesson is taken using the website - World Population Growth - Our World in Data

Steps to navigate-
Choose Population Growth Rate in metric bar. Then Select choice of any one
country/continent from the left bar to observe the trend in the population growth
rate. Population growth rate takes into account birth rate, death rate and
migration flows.

Sample image shown below-

An example of Population Growth rate trends in India and Japan can be seen below-
Now change the metric bar to – Natural population growth rate’. Natural population
growth rate only takes into account Birth and Death rate and excludes
Migration. Sample has been shown below.
Question to ponder-

1. What does this natural population growth rate show?

2. Does a fall in the trend line, indicate a fall in population or is the population still
growing?

Focus of today's nano lesson- Understanding the concept of population Growth rate
as the change in the population expressed as percentage. A fall in the population
growth rate doesn’t imply that the population is decreasing instead it means that
the population continues to increase but at lesser rate. This can be understood
using mathematical explanation as given below-
Source to be used- Read the first part of the article along with the inserted video on
Japan. Seven countries with big (and small) population problems - BBC News
Prompts-

1. The discussion of Stage 5 of DTM will be incomplete without looking at different

perspectives and its implications. To start the discussion, it is important to know the
characteristics of Stage 5, DTM, which are- falling DR- Falling BR even below the DR
which lead to fall in population or negative population growth rate.
2. To discuss the impact of Stage 5, one can look from perspectives of
different stakeholders like- Young population, Government, Retired Population, Migrant
workers etc. Also see the impacts and implications/ likely consequences of the stage 5
on them.
3. The implications of the country in stage 5 of DTM, can also be seen on different systems
within a country such as implications on government's Budget Planning, Population
Policy, Migration Policy etc. Implications can be seen as SEEP- Social, Economic,
Environmental, or Political.
4. If ed puzzle doesn't work, alternatively, Watch the video on you tube as a readiness to
next lesson.
5. Population pyramids: Powerful predictors of the future - Kim Preshoff - YouTube
Task 3- Formative assessment task on quick task toddle- Criteria D- 30 mins
Write down response to the question- 'Analyse population policy of Singapore'.
conduct research to gather evidence for your responses. Consider including the points above in
your answer.
Here's how you can apply the PEEL strategy to analyze population policies or trends:

 Point: Start by introducing the specific aspect of the population policy or trend that you
want to analyze. This is the main idea you will be discussing in the paragraph. (For the
case of singapore, this will be Anti natal or Pro Natal Policies.
 Evidence: Provide evidence from relevant sources to support the point you've made.
This could include data, statistics, quotes, or examples related to the population policy
or trend.
 Explanation: Explain the significance of the evidence you've presented. How does it
relate to the point you're making? What insights does the evidence provide about the
policy's effectiveness, impact, or implications for population trends?
 Link: Connect the analysis back to the broader context. Link the point you've discussed
to the overall theme of the essay or the specific goals of your analysis. You can also
use this part to transition to the next point you'll be discussing in the following
paragraph.

L- Link the explanation to the main point

Guidance on Essay Writing-

Introduction- consisting of the topic- population policies. You may include its meaning
and need. Use a Hook to begin the essay.

Body- Discussing the success/ failures of population policies in multiple paragraphs

using CEEL strategy.

Body paragraph 1- Explain Population policies as achieving desired result using an

example. This will require you to make a point, then use an evidence/ example to support
your point. Then explain the population policies as positive by giving its positive impact/
achieving desired result. Include the implications of the policies. Finally Establish a link
back to the main point.

Body paragraph 2- repeat the same for explaining population policies as negative. This is how
you will complete discussion on population policies

Concluding paragraph- Synthesize your discussion using the points in the answer to arrive at
your understanding of the debating statement.
