KNOCKDOWN FURNITURE
MAKING PROCESS: INTRODUCTION:
PLANNING: (2D AUTOCAD, Knockdown furniture is a type of furniture designed to be easily assembled and disassembled, usually
without the need for tools, using interlocking parts or fasteners. It is flat-packed for convenient storage and
VIEWS) transport.A small knockdown furniture piece, likely a stool, small side table, or decorative stand, made from
plywood or laminated board. Let me break down its features and design elements:
1. Materials Used
Plywood Board:
Likely 12–18mm thick.
Plywood is chosen for its strength-to-weight ratio and dimensional stability.
The layered edges reveal the cross-grain lamination typical of plywood, making it more resistant to
warping.
Surface Finish:
Appears to have a veneer or wood stain on the exposed surfaces.
The finish is minimal, possibly DIY, with a slightly rough edge, suggesting it may be a prototype or
handmade unit.
2. Joinery and Assembly Method
DRAWING ON PLYWOOD: This furniture uses a knockdown slot-fitting technique:
Slot or Cross-Lap Joint:
Two vertical pieces are cut with halfway slots so they slide into each other to form a stable cross
(X).
This gives it torsional strength without any nails or screws.
Groove-Fit for Top and Bottom Panels:
The circular top and bottom may have grooves or slots where the X-support structure slides in.
Alternatively, they might be press-fit or friction-fit using CNC precision cuts.
Tool-Free Assembly:
No nails, screws, or adhesives.
Ideal for flat-pack packaging and shipping.
LASERCUTTING:
3. Dimensions (Estimated)
Given the proportion relative to the plastic water bottle in the background:
Height: ~30–40 cm
Diameter of Base/Top: ~25–30 cm
Panel Thickness: ~12–15 mm plywood
4. Manufacturing Process
This could be easily manufactured using:
CNC Router Cutting: For high precision slot joints.
RESEMBLANCE: Laser Cutting (for thinner MDF versions).
Manual Jigsaw or Bandsaw: For prototyping or one-offs.
Each part is designed to be cut from flat stock, making it ideal for bulk production and quick
assembly.
5. Design Considerations
Ergonomics: If used as a stool, the hourglass shape gives leg room and center weight distribution.
Strength: The intersecting planes distribute vertical loads well.
Storage: Can be disassembled into 4 flat pieces.
Aesthetics: Minimalist, modern, somewhat rustic due to visible wood layers.
FINAL PRODUCT: 6. Use Cases
Side stool
Plant stand
Bedside table
Exhibition piece
Temporary furniture for events or small apartments
Educational/demo model for teaching furniture design and assembly
Stability- Add non-slip rubber pads or felt fee
