Urinary System

The urinary system, also known as the renal system, is essential for waste elimination and maintaining the body's internal balance. It includes organs such as the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, each with specific functions in filtering blood, transporting urine, and regulating fluid balance. The system also plays a role in hormone production and consists of processes like filtration, reabsorption, secretion, and excretion.

What is Urinary System?
-The urinary system, also known as the renal system or urinary tract, is a vital
part of the human body that plays a crucial role in eliminating waste and
maintaining the body's balance.
FUNCTION:
-The primary function of the urinary system is to filter waste products and
excess water from the blood, forming urine, and then eliminating this urine
from the body.
HOMEOSTASIS:
-The urinary system plays a vital role in maintaining the body's internal balance
(homeostasis) by regulating blood volume, blood pressure, electrolyte levels, and
blood pH.
EXCRETORY SYSTEM:
-The urinary system is also called the excretory system because it eliminates
waste products like urea and uric acid.
Urinary function is
vital for overall
health and
homeostasis.
It regulates fluid balance and waste
removal.
URINARY ANATOMY
-refers to the structures that make up the urinary system.
URINARY ANATOMY

Kidneys-remove wastes and extra fluid

from your body.
Ureter-transport urine from the renal
pelvis to the bladder.

Bladder-a reservoir and active

excretory organ for urine.

Urethra-allows urine to pass outside

the body.
KIDNEY FUNCTION:
-The kidneys are the primary filtration organs, containing numerous nephrons, the
functional units that filter blood and produce urine.

URETER FUNCTION:
-The ureters use smooth muscle contractions (peristalsis) to propel urine from
the kidneys to the bladder.
BLADDER FUNTION:
-The bladder can expand and contract to store and release urine, with the help of
sphincter muscles that control urine flow.
URETHRA FUNTION:

-The urethra is longer in males than in females, which can have implications for urinar
tract infections.
HORMONAL FUNTION:
-The kidneys also play a role in hormone production, such as erythropoietin,
which stimulates red blood cell production.
WASTE REMOVAL FOLLOWS THE FOLLOWING:

1.) FILTRATION

-The mass movement of water and solutes from plasma to the renal tubule that
occurs in the renal corpuscles.
2.) REABSORPTION

- The movement of water and solutes from tubule back into the plasma.

3.) SECRETION

-The continuous secretion of additional substances into the tubular fluid, and
4.) EXCRETION

-It is what goes to the urine.
