Rational Numbers

Workbook
Can You Cut It?

168 + 100.8 + 28.8 + 114 + 744 + 225 + 240 + 288 + 396 = 2304.
Congratulations! You just graduated from cooking school and are preparing for your first catering event!
The host has selected the following menu:

Starter – Green Salad

Main – Lasagna
Dessert – Tiramisu

Luckily, you have a great supplier of Tiramisu so you don’t have to make that from scratch but you do
need to purchase the ingredients and prepare the starter and main course.

The following is the ingredient list for 12 servings:

Salad:
4 heads of lettuce
2 red peppers
½ red onion
500 g of plum tomatoes

Lasagna
2 kg ground beef
1.5 L pasta sauce
1 kg mozzarella cheese
48 lasagna noodles
6 g Italian seasoning

There are two main types of Rational Numbers:

• Decimals (Repeating or Terminating); and
• Fractions
Notice that the amounts of each item listed above not only have different units, but they are also
written using both decimals and fractions. Choosing which one to use is important when solving
the problems throughout this project!
Part 1
a. Research to determine the cost of each ingredient. You can do this by opening a flyer in your local
newspaper, riding your bike down to the corner store, or even looking at your family's grocery
receipts! You choose!

Salad Cost Lasagna Cost

Lettuce Ground Beef

$3.5 ¥15.5 / 500g
Red Pepper Pasta Sauce
$4.2 $12.5 / L
Red Onion Mozzarella Cheese
$4.8 $2 / 100g
Plum Tomatoes Lasagna Noodles
$1.9/ 100g $0.5
Italian Seasoning
$5.5 / g

b. What is the cost of food for 12 people? Be sure to show all calculations!

4 heads of lettuce 4 * 3.5 * 12 = 168

2 red peppers 2 * 4.2 * 12 = 100.8
½ red onion 1/2 * 4.8 * 12 = 28.8
500 g of plum tomatoes (5 * 1.9) * 12 = 114
2 kg ground beef (4 * 15.5) * 12 = 744
1.5 L pasta sauce (1.5 * 12.5) * 12 = 225
1 kg mozzarella cheese (2 * 10) * 12 = 240
48 lasagna noodles 48 * 0.5 * 12 = 288
6 g Italian seasoning 5.5 * 6 * 12 =396

168 + 100.8 + 28.8 + 114 + 744 + 225 + 240 + 288 + 396 = 2304.60
c. What is the cost per person?

2304.6 / 12 = 192.05

d. Suppose you are asked to prepare this meal for 30 people. How much of each ingredient would be
required? What is the new cost?

4 * 3.5 * 30 = 420
2 * 4.2 * 30 = 252
1/2 * 4.8 * 30 = 72
(5 * 1.9) * 30 = 285
(4 * 15.5) * 30 = 1860
(1.5 * 12.5) * 30 = 562.5
(2 * 10) * 30 = 600
48 * 0.5 * 30 = 720
5.5 * 6 * 30 = 990

420 + 252 + 72 + 285 + 1860 + 562.5 + 600 + 720 + 990 = 5761.50

e. Suppose you are asked to cater a small gathering of 8 people. Determine the quantity of each
ingredient, in fraction form, and the total cost to the nearest cent.

12x = 8
x = 2/3

8/3 heads of lettuce total cost for 12 people: 2304.60

4/3 red peppers total cost for 8 people: 2304.6 * 2/3 = 1536.40
2/5 red onion
1/3 kg of plum tomatoes
4/3 kg ground beef
1 L pasta sauce
2/3 kg mozzarella cheese
32 lasagna noodles
4 g Italian seasoning

f. Your business is becoming popular and you are having a difficult time handling it all yourself so
you hire your cousin to help out. She’s not going to do you any favours though, and will only work
if you pay her $15/hour! Assume you hire her for 5 hours. Considering the cost of food for the
party of 12, how much should you charge the host so you will make twice as much as your cousin if
you work the same number of hours?

2306.6 + (1 + 2) * (15 * 5)
= 2511.60

g. Your cousin is going to help plate the food so you need to teach her how to do it properly. In
cooking school you learned that the lasagna should take up 1/3 of the plate and the salad the
other 2/3. If the plates are circular and have a diameter of 30 cm, determine the total area of the
plate in cm2 that the lasagna and salad should take up. Give answers accurate to one decimal place.

15^2 * 3.14 = 706.5

lasagna: 706 * 1/3 = 235.3 cm2
salad: 470.6 cm2
Part 2

Your turn! Now it’s time to crack open your family’s cookbooks and find your favorite recipe.

Note: in order for this to work and to be reasonable we ask that you stick to a baking recipe, either
something along the lines of a baked square or cookies.

Once you’ve found your favorite recipe. Record it here. You can either take a picture and upload or write
out the required ingredients.

salt: 8g
Olive oil: 12g
dried spaghetti: 170g
onion: 40g
garlic: 15g
cheese: 4g
marina sauce: 80gfround beef: 60g

Approximately how many servings does this recipe make?

2
What is the cost associated with the ingredients in your recipe? You will need to complete some work
similar to what you completed in Part 1. Do some research to find out what it costs to buy the ingredients,
and then apply your mathematical skills to find out the precise cost of each ingredient with respect to
your needs for your recipe.

cheese: 2$
ground beef: 8$
marina sauce: 8$
onion: 1$
garlic: 2$
olive oil: 1.2$
salt: 0.2 $
spaghetti: 15$

15 + 0.2 + 1.2 + 2 + 9 + 8 + 2 = 38.4

Now, choose 1 of the following 2 scenarios:

Scenario 1 Scenario 2
If your recipe makes 12 or less servings: If your recipe makes more than 12 servings:

Double it! How much of each ingredient will you Half the recipe, now how much of each ingredient
need? will you need?

spaghetti 30$
salt:0.4$
olive oil 2.4$
garlic 4$
onion 2$
ground beef 18$
marina sauce 16$
cheese 4$

Based on your above calculations in your chosen scenario, what is the new cost to producing your recipe?

38.4 *2 = 70.8$
Now – make it! And by make it, I mean create your new and improved recipe. Take some pictures and
show us your magical work!
Reflection Questions

1. How did it turn out? Did your calculations and measurements result in an excellent tasting final product?
Or did something go wrong? Explain your experience.

the calculations are all correct

2. Was it a good decision to double or half your recipe? Explain.

my opinion is that evn thought you double or half your recipe, you still get the same
recult at the end, because you are doubling or taking half of all the food out.
3. What other areas could you apply the idea of rational numbers to? Give 2 or 3 examples and explain
your reasoning behind choosing them.

1. you can calculate the price of oil or gas in the gas station when you fill your car.
2. you can calculate the price and sum of products you buy in supermarket.
