PART 2: READING COMPREHENSION
READING 1 (5 points)
Read carefully the paragraph and answer the following questions. Then let’s shadowing the content and
making a video
A. Introduction and Definitions
All around the world, there are international students at institutions of higher education. The definition
of an international student is “ a post-secondary student from another country.” The meaning of post-
secondary is “after high school.” Another phrase for international students is “foreign students.” The word
foreign means “of a different country or culture.” Even so, some people don’t like the word foreign. Instead,
they use the phrase “international students.” For an institution of higher education, they say “university,”
“college,” or “school.”
1. What kinds of students are there in the institutions of higher education?
2. What is the definition of an International Student?
3. What are some of the meanings of some words and phrases in international higher education?
4. Can you define the characteristics of an International Student?
5. How to become an International Student?

B. Where International Students Attend School
International students leave their home countries. They go to school abroad. One meaning of the word
abroad is “in a foreign place.” Probably, the country with the most students from abroad is the United State,
Canada, Great Britain, and some other European countries also have a lot of students from other countries.
But more and more, international students attend colleges and universities in the developing nations of Latin
America, Asia, and Africa. Developing nations are countries without a high level of industrialization or
technology.
1. What is the definition of “school abroad” ?
2. Where do most international students go to school? If you study abroad, what country do you want
to go? Give reasons for your answer?
3. What types of information are important to go abroad?
4. What is the definition of “developing nation” ?
5. If you are an international student, what subjects or activities are you interesting in the school and in
that country?
Notes: Submit your answers in Word then make a videos for your answers
C. Why Students Attend School Abroad
Why do high school and college graduates go to colleges and universities far from their home?
Undergraduates are postsecondary students without college degrees. Often, undergraduates want experience
of life in new countries. Maybe they want to learn another language well. These subjects are not always
available in their home countries. Some governments and companies send their best graduate students and
workers to other countries for new knowledge and skills. And some international students from expensive
private schools at home save money through study abroad programs, especially in developing nations.
1. Why do students attend colleges and universities far from their home?
2. What is the definition of “undergraduate” ?
3. Who are international students?
4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad?

5. When should you start preparing if you want to study abroad?
6. What should I prepare for studying abroad?
7. How do I prepare for a study abroad trip?
Notes: Submit your answers in Word then make a videos for your answers
D. Why Universities wants Foreign Students
Why do institutions of higher education want international students? Students from other countries and
cultures bring internationalism to the classroom and campus. They bring different languages, customs, ideas,
and opinions from many places. Also, educational institutions need money. Tuition is the fee or charge for
instruction. Private schools are colleges and universities not supported by government money. They charge
high tuition. International students are not citizens or immigrants. (One definition of citizens and immigrants
is “legal members of a nation or country.) International students pay full tuition and fees to state or
government schools. And all students away from home have to spend money for housing, food, recreation,
and other things. For these reasons, many schools and groups of schools want students from other countries.
1. Why do institutions of higher education want international students?
2. Why do many nations want or need foreign students at their colleges and universities?
3. Does your school want or need international students on campus? Give facts and reason for your
answer.
4. How can universities attract more international students?
5. What subject do you want to introduce with your international students? Give facts and reason for
your answer.
6. You have a talk to introduce the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh city,
how can you attract more international students to come with you?

usually teach large undergraduate classes with formal lectures. Students listen and write things down. Then
students may attend discussion groups with teaching assistants. In graduate seminars, small groups of students
discuss information and ideas with their professor and classmates.
Finally, another type of class takes place off campus. Distance learning and online students do most of their
work individually in other places. But they sometimes go to a campus for group meetings.

To explain how understanding context and culture relate to academic success, Barone talked about the
word participation.
Barone explained that for students in some parts of the world, participation means to listen carefully, while in
other parts of the world it may mean to speak quickly, often without waiting for others to speak first. She said
that sometimes a student's expectation for participation is not the same as a professor's expectation.
Dr. Barone said, "it's such a relative term. It's relative to each instructor. Each student will have their own
understanding of what that means. How do they read the specific context for what the participation
expectation is?"
Additionally, she said another difficulty for some international students is understanding idiomatic and
conversational English used by American students. At Vanderbilt University, she noted that it is difficult even
for international students with very high levels of academic English.

So, what can international students do to better prepare before they arrive in the U.S.?
Barone suggested that students think about all areas of their language ability beyond academic language. For
example, students should pay attention to how well they can speak and understand daily conversations
compared to how well they can write academic papers.
Knowing their abilities, students can look for help once they are in the U.S. Support services exist at both
large public universities and smaller, private colleges. Since large public universities usually have more
international students, it can be more difficult for them to provide individualized training, such as tutoring, to
all international students.
Barone added that international students should also learn vocabulary, expressions and writing that are
common in their field of study. For example, engineering students would communicate differently than those
who study literature. Similarly, daily conversations involving sports or food will have their common language.
