The Election
- On the Tuesday following the first Monday in November
- When citizens cast votes for presidential and vice presidential candidates, they are
selecting their state's electors ( đại cử tri). These electors as a group are called the
Eletoral college ( đại cử tri đoàn)
- The president and vice president are not actually chosen by how many people vote
for them (the popular vote) (phiếu phổ thông). they are chosen by elatoral votes
- 538 electoral votes; it takes 270 (a maiority) to win
The Inauguration ( lễ nhậm chức)
- on January 20
- The president move to the White House, appoints members of the cabinet
The Constitution
- the legislative branch ( Lập pháp) – Congress (Quốc hội)
+ makes laws:
a bill must be approved by 1/2 of the members of each house of Congress
and by the president
OR 2/3 of the members of each house of Congress if the president
disapproves)
+ the Senate (thượng viện):
100 senators (thượng nghị sĩ) - 2 senators from each state
Six-year terms
Every two years,one-third of all senators face reelection
+ the House of Representatives (hạ viện)
435 congressmen (hạ nghị sĩ) determined by that states population
Two-year terms
Every two years, all 435 congressmen face reelection
- the executive branch (hành pháp)
+ approves & enforces laws
+ the president: read laws; decide foreign policy; appoint judges of the federal
court, ambassadorsand other consular heads
+ the vice president: be elected only; become president upon the death,
resignation, or disability of the president
+ the cabinet: 14 departments; advice the president
- the ludicial branch ( tư pháp)
+ determine what laws mean and whether they are constitution (vi hiến)
+ consists of the federal courts
 Federal laws are controlled or affected by all three branches
