Dear Mrs.

Brown,
My name is Daniel, and I am a student in Class 11E. I am writing to you about the food in
our school cafeteria. The food tastes great, but I and the other students do not feel good when
we eat it every day. Since you are our school’s principal, we think you are the best person to
talk to about this problem.
In science class, we learned that if you eat processed food every day, you become unhealthy.
However, all of the meat and cheese served in our school cafeteria is highly processed. We
would prefer to have more fish, beans, and nuts on our lunch menu because these foods are
much healthier.
We also learned that our bodies get energy from carbohydrates. We leamed that carbs can
come from foods like pasta and bread. Our cafeteria serves bread every day. This seems like
a good option, but the carbs in white bread come from highly processed grains. Whole grain
bread tastes better, and it contains more vitamins, so it is much better for our health.
Finally, many students at our school are trying to avoid unhealthy snacks. The snack store at
school only sells candy, chocolate, and potato chips, which are high in sugar and salt. Please,
can we add some fruit to the snack store?
Thank you very much for reading my letter. I hope you can improve our school’s cafeteria
and help us grow strong and healthy.
Daniel Jones, Class 11E

You can find international fast food restaurant chains in almost

every country in the world. Many countries have local fast food
chains as well. There is one thing that these restaurants have in
common: they serve unhealthy food.
1. In America, one out of every four people eats fast food every day.
Americans spend over $115 billion on fast food every year and the rest of
the world has developed a taste for it as well. But why is this fact so
alarming to health experts?
2. Your body needs a certain amount of fat, calories, sugar and salt
every day, but you should get them from nutritious meals spread out
over an entire day. For instance, doctors suggest no more than 2.3
grams of sodium per day, which is about one teaspoon of table salt. Many
burgers at fast food restaurants have far more than this. If you add a
large order of chips to your meal, then you could be eating ten times the
recommended daily amount of sodium! On top of this, many people drink
cola with their meals. But a single can of cola contains over ten teaspoons
of sugar! This sugar is full of empty calories (calories which contain no
nutrients) and is therefore bad for your health.
3. Too much fat and too many calories can lead to being overweight.
This can cause lots of health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart
attacks and strokes. In order to stay healthy, doctors recommend that
people avoid fast food and eat fresh, home-cooked meals instead. These
provide proper nutrition and contain fewer calories than fast food. In
addition, doctors advise people to exercise frequently. This keeps the
body in good condition and improves a person’s mood and concentration
levels. So, with a healthy diet and regular exercise, you can look and feel
your very best!

Don't know how to create a healthy diet? I had the same problem. I knew what food tasted
good, but not what was good for my body. Then, I discovered the Healthy Eating Plate*, and
everything became easy! Check out these super simple tips.
Eat lots of fruit and vegetables. They look good, taste great, and have all the vitamins to
protect your body from diseases and heal from injuries. I add fruit on my breakfast cereal
each morning. It's delicious!
Choose good carbs from whole grains. Grains are seeds used to make foods like bread, pasta,
and rice. Be careful with processed grains, though, like in pasta. They provide about the
same amount of carbs as whole grains but have fewer vitamins. This was a problem for me
because I love pasta, and freshly baked French bread smells so good! But, now I try to eat
brown bread and rice instead of white. I haven't eaten processed carbs for two months. I look
better and feel much healthier.
Look for healthy protein. Sausages smell amazing and are full of protein. They might
HEALTHY seem to be a healthy option, but they contain highly processed meat which you
should really stay away from. Don't worry, you can find protein in many other foods, even in
plants. Beans, nuts, some whole grains, and some vegetables have protein.
Limit dairy products, salts, fats, added sugar, and oils. Choose healthy fats like vegetable
oils, nuts, seeds, and fish. Finally, don't forget to drink lots of water and stay active with
plenty of exercise.
See? I told you it was easy! Just follow the tips of the Healthy Eating Plate.
Tips for a Healthy Diet

Nowadays, many people are trying to eat a healthier diet. Eating

healthy meals is not hard to do. Here are some easy ways to eat better:
- Take the time to prepare delicious dishes that are also good for you.
Food you make at home is usually healthier than food from a restaurant
or cafeteria.

- Eat dishes with healthy ingredients, such as vegetables, and ones

without much sugar or salt.

In many places, fresh food is available at farmers' markets. Farmers

bring a variety of crops 10 these markets, including many kinds of fruits
and vegetables.

Although most of your meals should be healthy, it is fine to enjoy some

ice cream or cookies on special occasions like your birthday.
