CLASS NOTES:
What you intend in your heart is what you truly intend.
There are three types of Hijra:
The first type: (‫)هجرة المكان‬
The first type of Hijra is from the UK to a Muslim country.
The second type: (‫)هجرة العمل‬
The second type of Hijra is when you abandon an action for Allah.
The third type: (‫)هجرة العامل‬
The third type of Hijra is when you abandon someone who exposes their sin or from a person due
to their action.

COMMENTARY
- This hadith addresses the importance of sincere intention in one’s worship.
- A person’s intention should be pure at the beginning of every action.
- The title of reward for an action depends on a person's intention for performing that action.
- If an action is carried out with sincerity, it is rewarded by Allah, otherwise it is useless.
- The reason why Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ )
mentioned the importance of correcting intentions is because there was once
a man in Makkah who asked a lady by the name of Umm Qais for her hand in marriage.
- Umm Qais put a condition that in order to get married to
me you will have to leave your city and migrate to Madinah.
- The man fulfilled the condition and migrated and they got married.
- The man that migrated became known to the people as Muhaajir Umm Qais.
- Migration in those days had a great reward and Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) wanted to
emphasise that whatever action we do the intention needs to be for Allah’s sake.
- However, hadith scholars consider this to be an unconfirmed opinion.
- Niyya means to intend, desire or will something.
- Niyya is a function of the heart and not the tongue.
- Through Niyya, a person differentiates the nature of the action he is to perform.
- For example, an optional or make-up fast.
- It also differentiates its purpose such as spending to show off to others
or spending to please Allah and spread His religion.
- Actions are only according to intentions refers to how an action
can only be considered religiously valid if done with a sound intention.
- For instance, a person’s fast which includes avoiding food, drink, and sexual intercourse from dawn to
sunset, will only be considered valid if he had intended to fast for the sake of fasting and not, for
instance, because he did not have the time to eat during a busy work day.
- A person receives only what he has intended refers to the
reward a person will gain for a soundly intended action.
- With regard to intention, an action done purely for Allah's sake is superior to one
that is coupled with a desire to gain something worldly.
- For example, a pilgrim who makes the pilgrimage for Allah’s sake
but also intends to trade while in Makkah [a permissible action].
- However, if the reason for performing an act of worship is mixed with braggingness,
even to the slightest degree, then the action will not be accepted by Allah.
- As for unexpected praise a person receives on some accomplishment,
it is not sinful even if one feels happiness about it.
- Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬
َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬
َ described this praise and honour as:
“Advanced glad tidings [from Allah] for the believer” (Muslim).

What happens if an action is started with a pure intention, but the opinion of bragging occurs afterwards?
If it is a short opinion and does not stay in one’s heart then it will not cause any harm. However, if it is entertained and allowed to rest in one’s heart, then
there are two opinions. Imam Ahmad and Hasan al-Basri have expressed hope that the person will still be rewarded based on his initial intention in spite of
the entry of braggingness while performing the action. However, Ibn Jarir al-Tabari explains that it depends on the type of action. For example, if it is a broad
action, such as salat, fasting, or pilgrimage, which requires an initial intention, and if its requirements are met, then the action is considered complete, then
braggingness creeping in the middle of this action will not harm it. If, however, the action is not of this type but rather a separate action not consisting of
requirements, such as recitation of the Qur'an, remembrance of Allah, or teaching, then the intention will have to remain pure and free from bragging
throughout the action in order to be valid. Hence, actions require a renewal of the intention in order for them to gain reward.

CLASS NOTES: Nasiha is

when you want good for the one you are advising.
The best of the religion is to advise people.
You can’t follow deen without seeking advice.
Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬َ said
‘The religion of Islam is sincerity’ three times.
The companions said ‘To whom O’ Messenger of Allah’.
Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّلم‬ َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬َ replied:
‘To Allah, to his book, to his messenger, to the Imams,
to the leaders of the Muslim community and to their common people.

COMMENTARY
- Nasiha means to act with sincerity or to give good advice or to direct towards good.
- Nasihah to Allah means that you should have correct
belief in Allah and reject associating anything with Him.
- You should constantly try to purify the relationship with Him.
- You should do what is required and sustain from what is prohibited.
- You must know how to implement the shariah of Allah in your life.
- Nasiha is so important that it is the job of the messengers because they were sent to warn their people
from the punishment of Allah and to call them to the worship of Allah alone.
- Nasihah to His Book means believing that the Quran is the Speech of Allah,
that it was sent down as Revelation, and that there is
no similarity between the Speech of Allah and the speech of mankind.
- To be pure and sincere in your relationship with the Quran
requires that you have the utmost respect to the Quran.
- You call the Quran with respectful names, such as the Noble Quran and the Glorious Quran.
- You have to act on and respect the content of the Book,
by carrying out its commands and staying away from its prohibitions.
- Explaining the Quran to others, helping people understand the beauty of the Quran and defending the
Quran against attacks is part of giving nasiha to Allah’s Book.
- Part of giving Nasihah to Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬ َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬َ is knowing him, understanding his life
and the struggles he went through and relating his struggles to your daily life.
- Loving Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬ َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬َ more than anything else and loving him more than yourself
is part of giving nasihah to Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬ َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬َ .
- Obeying Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬ ‫و‬
َ َ ْ َ ُ ِ
‫ه‬ ‫ي‬‫ل‬َ ‫ع‬ ‫هلّلا‬ ‫ى‬ َّ
‫ل‬ ‫ص‬
َ , rejecting those who had hatred towards him, honouring
him, and following his manners and sunnah are all important aspects of giving nasihah to Prophet
Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬
َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬
َ .
- Giving nasihah to the leaders of the Muslims involves making dua for them that Allah guides them,
protects them and makes them able to carry out their responsibilities.
- Another way of giving nasiha to the leaders of the Muslims is to know them,
interact with them, get involved in their efforts in a constructive way and
not to sit back and criticise what they are doing without trying to help them.
- Giving nasihah to the Muslims in general means giving them advice.
- The Prophet (sas) said, “The rights of a believer over a believer are six”.
- He mentioned that among them is "if he asks you for advice you have to give him advice.”
- Giving nasiha involves guiding them towards that
which will correct their affairs in both this life and the next.
- It involves protecting them from harm, helping them in times of need, providing what is beneficial for
them, encouraging them to do good and forbidding them from evil with kindness and sincerity, and
showing mercy towards them.

CLASS NOTES:
A person can make dua to Allah when hopes are cut off.
There are four types of Dua.
The first type of Dua is Dua Fardh.
E.g. Allah commanded Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬
َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬
َ
to make Dua for the destruction of the nation.
The second type of Dua is Dua wajib. E.g. Dua Qunoot.
The third type of Dua is Dua sunnah. E.g. Dua after Tashahhud.
The fourth type of Dua is Dua ibaadah. E.g. General Dua.

COMMENTARY
— Supplication has been called the essence of worship for two main reasons.
— First, by supplicating to Allah, a person fulfils his obligation of calling on Allah.
— This is understood from the verse
“And your Lord says, ‘Call on Me, I will answer you (your prayer) (Qur'an 40:60).
— This is worship in its purest form.
— Second, by calling on Allah, one realises that only He can fulfil one’s needs.
— It is when a person abandons hope in everything else.
— It is when he turns his full attention to Allah and humbles himself in front of Him.
— This is the essence of worship.
— Another desired result of worship is to attain reward from Allah.
— Because there is such great reward in supplication, it has been called the essence of worship.
- Allah has commanded us to call upon Him and He has promised to respond to our call.
- When making the Dua, it is acceptable to ask for good in this worldly life and in the hereafter. - A
person making Dua should not hold back, but ask
Allah to grant both the largest and smallest requests.

COMMENTARY
— Hadith narrations mention that there are more than seventy branches of faith.
— Of these, haya (modesty, bashfulness, shyness) is specifically mentioned.
— It is one of the most important branches.
- Modesty is a part of faith because the modest person is urged by
his modesty to stay away from sins and to perform religious obligations.
— Haya is an important means of restraining oneself from sin.
— The type of haya referred to in this hadith is the modesty that
comes from faith and not the natural shyness in a person.
— Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud relates that one day Prophet Muhammad said:
— “Be shy of Allah Most High as much as is His due.”
—. The Companions present said, “All praise to Allah, we are shy of Him.”
— Prophet Muhammad said:
— “That is not the point. Whoever is shy of Allah as much as is His due,
he should protect his head and that which it comprises (mind, mouth, ears),
his stomach and that which is adjoining it (preserve it from unlawful wealth and protect the private
parts from the unlawful) and he should remember death and that which is to come after it and whoever
desires the Hereafter should abandon the adornments of this world. Whoever fulfils these duties has
been shy of Allah as much as is His due”.

who loves a group of people, but is unable to join them?”
- ‘A group of people’ : learned or righteous people.
- ‘Unable to join them’ : A person who is unable to gain their company or
achieve the same status as them in knowledge and action.
- To this Prophet Muhammad ‫سلَّ َم‬َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬

COMMENTARY
- When under the influence of alcohol the mind does not stay in sense,
it makes the person commits such sin that he is not even aware of it.
- Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar states:
“Alcohol is the root of all shameless acts, and one of the biggest sins.
He who drinks alcohol it is as though he has committed adultery
with his mother, his paternal and maternal aunt.”
- Drinking alcohol leads many people to do things that they regret afterward.
- ‘There is a saying that a person was once called to prostrate

He was then invited to commit adultery, but refused. However, when he was
offered alcohol he accepted and he then committed all of the other sins”.

COMMENTARY
- Haste: excessive speed of movement or action.
- When starting any form of worship or work for deen, one should hurry in starting it.
- However, rushing through ibadah is from shaytaan.
- For example, rushing towards praying salah, one should
hurry towards starting the worship but not during the salah.
- Shaytan likes us to rush so that we make mistakes.
- He does not like things to be good and perfect.
- He wants us to make lots of mistakes and have regrets.
- Allah likes you to be free of errors and be perfect so that you can have more time to worship him and so
that you can have peace of heart and mind with which you can worship him. - How many times
does it happen that you have done some work or completed a task and because you
have rushed it, your teachers or parents have said to you: “You could have done
better”. - A person is encouraged to
conduct his daily activities with calmness and patience. - This is because acting in haste
often leads to spoiling one’s actions. - However, when it comes to worship, a
person is encouraged to hasten towards good. - A person should start good acts with
determination and eagerness and then complete them with calmness, concentration
and devotion. - For example, it is disliked for one
to run to join the prayer, but it is admirable to perform the ablution (wudu) at home
and set out for the prayer early.

COMMENTARY
— This hadith describes the contrast between two types of people.
— The first type is a true believer who avoids the affairs of this world.
— He occupies himself with making provisions for the next world.
— At times, this type of person may be tricked in his worldly affairs, not out of ignorance,
but because of his generous and noble character and lack of concern for the
material objects of this world and he is free of doubt towards others.
— The second type of person is a transgressor or an unrighteous
person who is knowledgeable with the methods of falsehood.
— He never allows himself to be tricked but continually tricks others.
— He is ungenerous in nature.
— This type of person has been characterised by Prophet Muhammad ‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ
as ignoble and his nature contrary to that of a true believer.
- A true believer is simple and upright in his dealings with people.
- There is no hypocrisy or conflict in the way he conducts his affairs.
- A true believer is one who is always in worry in the life of the
hereafter and keeps this in the forefront of his mind in all dealings
and forgives everyone, the matter is the opposite of the transgressor.
- They do not forgive and think only of revenge.
- This is because they do everything only for the
life of this world, without a thought for the hereafter.
- Their ultimate goal is the life and luxury of this world and for this
they are willing to do whatever it takes, even if it means deceiving people.

Prophet Muhammad (‫س َّل َم‬
َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) said:
Oppression will be darkness on the Day of Judgment (Bukhari).

COMMENTARY
— Righteous deeds will be a source of light on the Day of Judgment.
— “Darknesses” : a symbolic reference to the hardships and torments of the Day of Judgment.
— Zulm can be upon oneself - the worst of which is ascribing
partners with Allah (shirk), followed by the major and minor sins.
— Or it can be related to others such as wrongfully taking another's honour, life or property.
- Oppression will turn into darkness on the Day of Resurrection.
- The reason for this is when someone oppresses another,
he turns the life of another person into darkness.
- For instance, if one steals someone’s £100,000,
he changes that person’s life into difficulties and gloominess.
- So on the Day of Judgment, Allah will darken the life of the oppressor for what he did.
- On the Day of Judgment, one will have to cross a bridge in order to gain entry into Paradise.
- The person’s good deeds will act as a light so that
he may cross and bridge and enter into Paradise.
- If someone oppresses, or is a disbeliever, a hypocrite, or a Muslim with very few
good deeds, then they will not receive this necessary brightness to cross the bridge.

- Pride is one of the greatest sins and in order to cleanse the heart
from it, regular repentance must be established for its forgiveness.

The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever.
(Muslim, Tirmidhi).

COMMENTARY
- This world is a prison for the believer in comparison to the
bounties and rewards prepared for him in the next world.
- It is a paradise for a disbeliever in comparison to the
punishment awaiting him in the next world.
- A true believer's desire is to leave this world and meet Allah (hence, a prison),
whereas an unbeliever’s desire is to live in this world forever (hence, a paradise).
- A believer is mindful of Allah and is not free to do what they please.
- This is why this world feels like a prison to them.
- However a person who is not mindful of Allah does whatever
they feel or whatever they think they can get away with.
- There are many things that can be enjoyed in this world.
- A person who is not looking forward to meeting their Lord
would spend every moment trying to maximise their enjoyment here.
- The non - believer can find this world to be a Paradise.
- The believer knows that no happiness is everlasting and that
they are always in danger of falling into the hands of Shaytaan.
- They long to get out of the exam that this world is and into the safety of the grave.

The tooth stick cleans the mouth and pleases the Lord.

COMMENTARY
- The tooth-stick cleans the mouth from dirt, foul odours and other harmful things.
- The Sunnah practice of using the tooth-stick is achieved by brushing with anything that cleans the
teeth, such as the toothbrush and toothpaste, and any other cleaner.
- Using the tooth-stick has many benefits, including that it gives a pleasant smell to the mouth, firms the
gums, sharpens the eyesight, conforms to the Sunnah, delights the angels, pleases the Lord, increases
good deeds and heals the stomach.
- A person should start from the right side, and use a side-to-side
motion rather than up-and-down as it may harm the gums.

(Bukhari, Muslim).

COMMENTARY
- It is the position of giving something to someone that is superior to taking from someone.
- The upper hand is one that gives.
- The lower hand is one that takes.
- The upper hand refers to those who can comfortably support
themselves as well as their dependents and needy relatives.
- The person who spends and gives his wealth in charity and similar
acts of obedience is better than the one who asks people for money.

TRANSLATION
Prophet Muhammad (‫س َّل َم‬

Backbiting is worse than unlawful intercourse.

CLASS NOTES:
Talking behind someone’s back is very common,
not only with words, it can also be actions.
When one backbites, one should seek istighfaar.
The first way is by one asking the person to forgive them
without them saying that they have backbited.
The second way is by one going to the same place they have backbited
about them and they speak well about them.
If the person doesn’t accept the forgiveness, they should ask Allah for forgiveness.
The person that gets backbited about, takes the good deeds of the backbiter.

COMMENTARY
— This narration continues with the Companions asking
Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬
َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬
َ why backbiting is more severe.
— Prophet Muhammad ‫س َّل َم‬ َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬
َ replied that:
— “The person who fornicates is forgiven by Allah if he sincerely repents, but the one who backbites is
not forgiven until the person he transgressed against forgives him.”
— Another reason for this is that unlawful intercourse is normally recognized by the fornicator as a
serious sin; hence, there is a greater chance of him turning to Allah and repenting.
— On the other hand, a person who backbites does not normally realise the
seriousness of his sin and takes it lightly; hence, he does not stop and repent.

TRANSLATION
Prophet Muhammad (‫س َّل َم‬َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) said:
Purity is half of faith (Muslim).

CLASS NOTES
A lot of Ibaadah is about purification.
Imaan is incomplete without purification.
Cleaning after oneself is the basics and the bare minimum.

COMMENTARY
— Some scholars have taken imaan (faith) to mean prayer (salat) in this context.
— Hence, purity becomes half of prayer because
it is the most important duty of the prayer.
— Another explanation is that just as entering into faith removes one’s major
and minor sins, the performing of ablution removes one’s minor sins.
— This hadith can also be taken as a general encouragement
towards purity in all one’s states and actions.
— It is important to note that purity is different from cleanliness.
— It means to be free from physical impurities like blood, urine, or stool and
from the state of ritual impurity while the later means to appear outwardly clean.
— Though this hadith speaks of purity in particular.
— Muslims should be both pure and clean as it was
the practice of Prophet Muhammad ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ .
— The hadith refers to the inward and outward purity.
— The purity of the body is achieved by keeping away
from filth and removing the state of ritual impurity.
— The purity of the heart is to be free from polytheism and diseases of the heart.

HADITH SEVENTEEN

َ ) said:
The Qur’an will either be evidence for you or against you (Muslim).

CLASS NOTES
The more a person recites the Qur’an, the more a person
will be able to understand it and ponder about it.
The Quran can be an evidence against the person if they abandon it.
If the person reads the Quran and does not act upon it,
then the Quran would work against them.
It should be an inherent part of a routine to recite the Quran.

COMMENTARY
— The Qur'an will be “evidence” for one on the Day
of Judgment if he acts upon its commandments.
— Otherwise, it will be a proof against him.
— It is related from ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud that the Qur’an will appear on the Day of Judgment
and will intercede for the one who read it and will then guide him into Paradise.
— On the contrary, the Qur'an will bear witness against the
one who neglected it and will then drive him into the Hellfire.
— If a person acts upon the commandments in the Quran
by following its guidance, it will benefit him.
— If he does not follow it’s guidance then it will be against him.

COMMENTARY
— This hadith comes from the idea that their ringing distracts
a person’s attention from the remembrance of Allah.
— The word ‫ َمزَا ِمي ُر‬has been used here in the plural
to relate to the constant ringing sound of a bell.
— Bells that are hung on animals are one of the musical instruments of Satan whereby he
distracts people from the purpose for which they were created.
— As for the bells used for alerting people such as the bells used in houses, schools and the like are
permissible unless they involve something prohibited, like being similar to church bells or producing a
musical sound in which case they would be prohibited.

Women are the traps of Shaytaan.

CLASS NOTES
When a woman leaves her house, even if she is the most unattractive woman,
Shaytaan will make her look attractive to men outside.
This is similar to how a fisherman uses bait to catch fish.
Shaytaan beautifies everything that is haram in order to trap women.

COMMENTARY
— Men have been commanded to lower their gazes.
Women have been commanded to follow a modest dress code.
— These are safety measures for both sexes - if a man does not lower his gaze, the modest dress of
women will prevent him from realising any of his sinful behaviour and vice versa.
— Shaytan uses them to misguide men who are slaves to their desires.

The grateful eater is like the patient fasting person.

CLASS NOTES
The person who eats and drinks while thanking Allah,
his reward will be like the reward of a person who fasted and is patient.

COMMENTARY
- The one who eats is “thankful” in that he begins with
the Name of Allah and ends with praise of Him.
- The one who fasts is “patient” in that he abstains from doing anything that breaks the fast.
- The point of similarity between the two is that both acts are deserving of reward,
even though the reward of the fasting person is surely greater.
- The status of a person who eats and is grateful is
the same as a person who is patient while he fasts.
- Eating is an action and fasting is self-control.
- The one who eats food comes to His Lord with gratitude.
- The one who fasts and abstains from food comes to Him with patience.
- The bare minimum of gratitude is that he mentions Allah’s name
when he begins eating and praises Him when he finishes.
- The bare minimum of patience is that he stops
himself from the things which would invalidate his fast.

Moderation in spending is half of one’s livelihood.
Moderation in spending is half of [one’s] sustenance

CLASS NOTES
A person should be moderate in everything they do.
They should not spend on unnecessary things.
A person will be held accountable for everything they have.
Moderation is to think about spending carefully.

COMMENTARY
- “Moderation in spending...” is best understood by the verse of the Qur'an:
“Those who, when they spend, are not extravagant and not miserly,
but hold a just balance between the two” (Qur'an 25:67).
- What one spends his wealth on provides half the answer of the stability in one’s livelihood.
- The Quran has called the Muslims a middle nation.
- Islam encourages the principle of moderation in every walk of life.
- A person should not be stingy with spending nor should he be extravagant with spending.
- Stinginess is one who does not spend on himself and his family according to his means.
- He does not spend on any charitable purpose.
- Extravagance is spending wealth on unlawful things such as gambling and
drinking or excessive spending on lawful things that is beyond one’s means.
- If people are moderate, they will never be dependent on others.
- Over spending more than one’s income leads to
debt which brings disgrace, worry and frustration.

Friendliness towards people is half one’s intelligence.

CLASS NOTES
If a person is friendly to people then people will be friendly back.
A person should not expect anything back from others.
If a person is truly intelligent then the person would know the importance of friendships.
Friendliness represents our deen.
Friendliness benefits the Dunya and Aakhirah as a person will be rewarded.

COMMENTARY
- “Friendliness toward people...” means that a person's intelligence is perfected through interaction with
others in that the collaboration of two minds is better than one.
- If one is friendly to people there will be greater collaboration
and harmony between them, one would learn from people who he is
collaborating with and the chances of success are greatly increased.

One who repents from sin is like one who has no sin.

COMMENTARY
- This hadith refers to one who repents sincerely.
- The similarity between the two people is in terms of accountability.
- Just as the person who did not commit any sins does not have to give account, the one
who has repented will no longer have to give account for the sins he repented from.
- As for who is the better of the two, there is a difference of opinion among the scholars.
- The superior view, according to Mulla ‘Ali al-Qari, is in favour of the one
who did not sin at all, since his state is closer to that of the prophets and angels.
- If a person commits a sin, then repents sincerely from it,
gives it up, regrets having done it, prays for forgiveness and does not go back to it,
Allah will accept his repentance and treat him like one who did not sin.
- He will turn his bad deeds into good deeds, and He will love him and make him one of His pious slaves,
because he repented to his Lord, turned to Him because of his love for Allah, his keenness to please Him,
and his fear of Him and these are the characteristics of the pious.

COMMENTARY
- The intelligent one is the one who realises the reality of this world as being temporary.
- He understands that death is approaching and realises the weakness of his nafs.
- He is aware of the traps of Shaytan and he regularly engages in self evaluation.
- He fears Allah and works on getting close to Him.
- The weak one is the one who follows the desires of this world.
- He expects Allah to forgive him without striving towards any good.

- Meeting with others in a sociable manner encourages others to do the same.

[Songs make hypocrisy grow in the heart just as water makes crops grow.]

COMMENTARY
- Some sins have an effect of leading a person onto sin further.
- Where there is music, there is generally dancing, intermingling, women, intoxicants and zina.
- Abundant sinning without repentance can eventually lead one out of the fold of Islam.
- Therefore, the more one engages in music, the closer he gets to hypocrisy.
- Singing has specific characteristics that affect the heart, instilling hypocrisy
in the heart and causing it to grow, just as water causes plants to grow.
- Music changes the mind and it puts a person into a different mood.
- It creates an effect on the heart and shaytaan uses this tool to attract us into haram.

Traders will be gathered on the day of Judgement as transgressors except the one
who fears Allah and is righteous and truthful.

COMMENTARY
- Traders can often be deceitful and dishonest in promoting their merchandise.
- Therefore, prophet Muhammad warned them that they would be raised as transgressors.
- He then excluded those who fear Allah in their dealings and speak the truth.
- He said that they would be blessed with the company of the prophets.
- Traders include all types of business men and brokers.
- Scholars mention that the word ‘trader’ should be taken in a more general meaning
whereby everybody involved in any sort of transaction would fall in this category.
- If you sell products or services, directly to the
consumer or indirectly this hadith would apply to you.
- For example, doctors are transgressors if they are not honest with their patients.
- Engineers are transgressors if they are not honest about the status of their projects.
- Salesmen are transgressors if they are not honest about their product.
- Anybody who gets a full salary but slacks off at work is a transgressor.
- According to a hadith about marketplaces:
Abu Huraira (RA) reported: Prophet Muhammad ‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ said,
“The most beloved of places to Allah are the mosques,
and the most hated places to Allah are the markets.”
- Market places are places of deception, greed, lies
and unfair treatment and therefore are hated by Allah.

COMMENTARY
- This hadith shows the great excellence of a merchant who possesses these qualities.
- He will be honoured with a high position by him being with the Prophets,
the honest men, and the martyrs on the Day of Resurrection.
- The meaning of honesty and trustworthiness in trading is giving the information regarding
the occurring trade and an explanation about the fault of the traded merchandise if it has any.
- This attitude is what brings blessing and goodness in trading,
as the saying of Prophet Muhammad ‫سلَّ َم‬َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬

“If they (sellers and buyers) are honest and they explain

The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, when he makes a promise
he breaks it, and when he is trusted he betrays the trust.

COMMENTARY
- Prophet Muhammad ‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ taught us
that a hypocrite can be identified by three signs.
- Firstly, they are known to lie when they speak.
- Secondly, they make promises but do not keep them.
- Lastly, if someone trusts them with something important then they will betray that trust.
- These traits are the opposite of what a true believer should have.
- A true believer has honesty in speech and action and is trustworthy and reliable in all matters. - It is
important to remember these teachings so that we can identify hypocrites
in our lives and avoid associating with them or taking their advice seriously.
- You should be honest in speech and action.
- You should be trustworthy and reliable in all matters.
- You should avoid associating with hypocrites or taking their advice seriously.
- You should avoid lying, breaking promises and betraying trust.

disobeying parents, killing a soul and a false oath.

COMMENTARY
- The first major sin is "associating partners with Allah".
- This is the disbelief in Allah such that a person worships
others along with Him and denies the worship of his Lord alone.
- The second is disobeying your parents.
- This is to disobey one or both parents by disrespecting them, cursing them, and
failing to attend to them and take care of them when they are in need of their child.
- The second is killing a soul.
- This is to kill without a right such as killing someone out of injustice or aggression.
- If the person deserves to be killed then this is not included in the meaning of this Hadīth.
- The fourth is taking a false oath.
- This is to take a false oath intentionally.

Righteousness is good character and sin is what causes uneasiness in your heart and
what you dislike people to become aware of.

- Dealing with others in a good way is essential to good manners.

- There are 3 dimensions to manners.
- With Allah: By fulfilling His right to be worshipped.
- With humans and the environment: By being good to them and not harming them.
- With yourself: By not hurting yourself physically or mentally.
- Good manners are not just with actions but are in the inner self and being in a good state.
- The purpose of the heart is to differentiate right from wrong, so we should constantly purify it. - Being
righteous is linked to having good manners so it is important to
perfect your manners so that you may be from the righteous.
- Righteousness, as mentioned in the second Hadīth, could be defined as whatever one’s
soul feels at ease with and it usually feels at ease with good deeds and sayings.
- On the other hand, sinfulness is whatever one’s soul feels uneasy with.
- It is like recurring doubt in the heart that one should avoid
out of piety and for fear of committing what is prohibited.
- Piety is leaving them all and going only for what one’s heart feels relaxed with.
- Whatever one’s heart feels uneasy with is sinful, even if people say otherwise.

COMMENTARY
- This hadith encourages kindness to all of God’s creation.
- Kindness involves trying to understand others rather
than believing everything we hear about them.
- Muslims should be kind to people of other faiths
because they are also part of Allah’s creation.
- The hadith applies to both human as well as non-human beings, including animals,

COMMENTARY
- A Muslim is someone who does not harm other Muslims with their words or actions.
- A Muhajir is someone who stops himself from doing what Allah has forbidden.
- The Muslim is the one from whose tongue the Muslims are safe, so he does not insult, curse,
or backbite them, nor does he seek to sow any type of evil or corruption among them.
- They are safe from his hand, so he does not assault them,
take their property without right, or do anything of that nature.

COMMENTARY
- You need to become someone who keeps good company.
- The company that you keep will transform who you are.
- Just as by looking at a mirror, one sees all the spots and blemishes on their face.
- In the same way, a Muslim must perfect their actions,

- Just as a person recognises their faults by looking at a mirror,
in the same way, a Muslim should be such that by looking at their qualities,
others become mindful of their own weaknesses.

Believers are like one body of a person; if the eye is sore, the whole body aches,
and if the head aches, the whole body aches. (Muslim)

COMMENTARY
- Islam teaches that all believers are one body and when one
part of the body is hurting, then the entire body is hurting.
- The Muslim ummah is described as one unit, existing in the world in one form.
- It explains that like one body, Muslims should be striving to take care of any
particular group of Muslims in the world who are struggling or suffering in any way.
- Muslims who are experiencing times of ease should not just feel empathy with those going through
hardship, they should actually feel the pain as if they themselves were suffering from it.

Travelling is a form of punishment. It deprives a person

COMMENTARY
- Torment is the pain resulting from hardship involved
in riding, walking and leaving behind one's habitual lifestyle.
- Travel stops one from enjoying the pleasures of life perfectly due to the hardship, suffering from heat
and cold, fear, separation from family and friends, and rough living conditions.
- That is because a traveller is usually worried, does not eat or drink his
normal food and drink as in ordinary times, and likewise is the sleep.
- So, if this is the case, then one should return to a comfortable life to
his family and country so that he could look after his family and discipline them.

COMMENTARY
— The Hadith shows the grace and favour of Allah

— Just as they are rewarded for going out to do acts of worship, they are
also rewarded when they return home after having performed them.
— Therefore, the Prophet Muhammad ‫سلَّ َم‬َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬

COMMENTARY
— Debt is a serious matter in Islam.
— It is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly or neglected.
— Islam does not prohibit debt; it recognises the fact that
people may face circumstances that necessitate borrowing.
— However, it emphasises caution, responsibility, and most
importantly, the intention and effort to repay the debt on time.
— Paying off debt is a virtue and a means of attaining Allah's reward and forgiveness.

- The first word revealed to our Prophet Muhammad was the word ‘Iqra’ - Read!
- Reading is an essential part of attaining knowledge.
- The commandment for us to read is essentially a call for us to seek knowledge, expand our
understanding, analyse God’s creation and think and reflect on the universe and our existence.
- Seeking knowledge is a means of attaining closeness to Allah in Islam.
- Muslims are encouraged to reflect on the signs of Allah in the universe
and to use their intellect to explore and understand His creation.
- This allows for a deeper appreciation and understanding of
Allah’s creation and enables recognition and appreciation of his greatness.

Prophet Muhammad (‫س َّل َم‬
َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) said:
The best among you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it.

COMMENTARY
- The best of the Muslims are those who combine between
these two properties of learning and teaching the Qur’an.
- Learning the Qur’an is one of the most honourable branches of knowledge.
- Such learning and teaching include both the words and meaning.
- Memorising the Qur’an and teaching people how to
recite and memorise the Qur’an is included in teaching.
- The second kind of learning and teaching has to do with the meanings of the Qur’an.
- Teaching the Qur’an includes teaching Qur’an interpretations
as well as informing people about the necessary rules.
- The one who learns is the one who learns the Quran with
its meaning or the bare minimum of how to read the Quran.
- It can refer to the one who knows tajweed or is advanced in its tafseer.
- He knows the morals and the etiquettes of the Quran.
- The person that knows the Nahw and Sarf.
- When it comes to teaching, teaching the Arabic letters and teaching Nahw and Sarf.
- This does not have to take place in a classroom setting,
it can take place at home or even as a lecture.
- When a person has learnt the Quran, they are not only
guided themselves but they are also guiding to help others.
- When you point towards good, you take a share of their good.
- You raise the person's rank in the Akhirah.
- When a person is teaching what they have learnt,
they get double the reward as they are learning and teaching.
- The best thing is to have someone on going.
- Prophet Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬encouraged us to learn and teach
the Quran as it contains guidance for all aspects of life.
- He wanted us to share our knowledge with others so that they can benefit from it too.
- By doing this, we can help spread peace, love, mercy, justice, kindness,
patience and other values found in Islam throughout society.
- We should strive to become better Muslims by learning more
about our religion through studying its teachings in depth.
- We should take initiative to teach others what we have
learned so that they may benefit from it as well.

Love of this world is the origin of all sin.

COMMENTARY
- When you love something, you are blinded by it; it takes over all your emotions.
- The more you give into it, the more addicted you become.
- When you don’t have it, you crave it.
- Because of this blinded love, it becomes a root for all the sins that they will commit.
- If you love status, you would love to backbite as you want to put people down.
- If you love wealth, you will participate in interest.
- If you dislike the world, you wouldn’t fall into any sin.

COMMENTARY
- Continuous charity is a beloved action to Allah.
- For them to do this is better than giving a massive amount of money all in one go.
- Reading one side of the Quran every day is a beloved action to Allah.
- That is better than a person that has read the whole
Quran in a day and never touches the Quran again.
- It is important to do actions continuously.
- Allah loves this consistency in his believers.
- You should ask Allah to help you do actions continuously.

COMMENTARY
- A hungry stomach is when a person is in a state of hunger.
- They are physically weak and internally weak.
- Intellectually, they can’t think of anything but to satisfy this hunger.
- When you give food, you should think about the effect that you have made.
- It gives them energy inwards and outwards and a peace in mind.

one who is greedy for worldly possessions can never get enough of them.

COMMENTARY
- The one who is greedy for knowledge won’t be content.
- Knowledge is a never ending journey.
- There is always learning knowledge and teaching knowledge.
- It is never ending and knowledge never dies down.
- If you stop seeking knowledge after Alimiyyah;
it shows that you do it only for a certificate.

The most virtuous jihad is when one speaks
a word of truth before an unjust ruler.

COMMENTARY
- Jihad comes from the verb jahada - to strive.
- In Islam, it is to fight in the path of Allah.
- When doing this we are establishing injustice and fighting against injustice.
- The biggest form of jihad is to establish Tawhid under justice.
- Being someone who speaks the just truth to an oppressive
leader is risking their life so this is the greatest Jihaad.
- Once there was a young boy who was sent to learn magic.
- On his way, he saw a religious monk and the boy liked what the monk would say.
- He was late to the magician everyday because he would talk to the monk.
- One day there was a lion that was about to attack him.
- He said bismillah and the lion went away.
- From then on, he decided to go on the path of Islam.
- He healed a man from the king’s court from blindness.
- When the king heard about this, he felt threatened.
- When the king asked him who is god, the boy told him all about Allah
- The king became angry and ordered his soldiers to throw him off a cliff.
- The boy started making dua whilst climbing up.
- However the cliff crumbled and the soldiers fell but the boy survived.
- The king then told his men to throw him into the sea.
- While doing this the soldiers that were on the ship sank and they died.
- The king asked him what would kill him.
- The boy replied ‘if you say bismillah and shoot with an arrow.
- It worked and the boy passed away.
- But through this, the people that saw this became Muslim even though he had a sad ending,
- In Shariah, you should obey your leader however if they do
something against Islam you must speak the truth.
- You should always establish the truth wherever you go
and in that way the people around you can improve.

One jurist is more severer on the Shaytaan than 1000 worshippers.

COMMENTARY.
- A jurist is a person of understanding and knowledge.
- A jurist acts upon this knowledge.
- An aabid is a general worshipper and he does actions.
- The person of understanding is harder to get to than 1000 worshippers.
- The reason is because the jurist knows how Shaytaan works.
- If a person was praying and then Shaytaan comes and says you are praying
just to show off, the aabid would stop as he has pride in his heart.
- Even though there is goodness in jurists and worshippers, there is a warning for the jurist.
- A person with knowledge, the Shaytaan can use the knowledge against them.
- For example as a child, you know the numbers of the prayers, but as one turns old they
learn what nafl is and different prayer numbers, one turns lazy and doesn’t pray them at all.
- A worshipper isn’t lower than a jurist.
- Imam Malik would close his books in Ramadan and won’t teach, he would just be a worshipper. - Abu
Hanifa would pray nafl if he was trying to figure out a mas’alah when it didn’t come to him. - Shaytaan
wants to put you down throughout this pathway.
- He will try everything to push you away.

COMMENTARY
- If a person is doing abundant istighfaar, it doesn’t go to waste.
- It goes into his record and any of this person's shortcomings will be wiped away.
- There is a double benefit with this.
- Sins will be forgiven and it is then replaced by good.
- The person will be blessed in replacement with it.
- You should be consistent with istighfaar.
- Just as you win every day, you should repent every day.
- The hard part is dealing with the consequences of it.
- Whenever you want something from Allah, you need to give something back to Allah.
- You should honour your master.

COMMENTARY
- No one is perfect and everyone sins.
- Humans sin a lot but they are not aware of it.
- When one sins they should do tawbah.
َ‫ التَّ َّوابُ ْون‬is one who continuously repents.
- The conditions of tawbah are: sincere regret, sincere and
that one is determined of not going back to that action.
- Allah loves the one who sins but repents after.
- One needs to think about what leads them to commit that sin.
- One needs to think about what steps to go back on and what steps to go forward on.

many there are who pass the night standing in prayer but do not gain anything from

COMMENTARY
- When one is fasting, it is not only about abstaining from food and water.
- The fast is valid but not confirmed if it is accepted.
- One should look at the quality and one should know that fasting is only for Allah.
- Only Allah will give the reward when one is fasting.
- One is staying away from a halal act but one should fast for the sake of Allah.
- Some fasting people start losing patience and they start arguing with people.
- If one’s intention isn’t sincere or correct, one will only get the worldly benefit.
- The standing of prayer is talking about tahajjud as it is the best prayer one can do.

COMMENTARY
- One needs to think to themselves if loneliness is good for them or bad for them..
- Some people sin more when they are alone and
others sin less and do more ibaadah when they are alone.
- It is important to have a righteous companion so that one doesn't fall into sin.
- A righteous companion guides one through the right path.
- With an evil companion, one will find it easier to sin.
- An evil companion won’t care if one sins around them.
- Even if one is good and hangs out with the bad,
they will automatically rub into them and follow.

COMMENTARY
- When one speaks every word they utter will be either for them or against them.
- If it is good it will be for them and if it is bad it will be against them.
- Before one speaks, they should think if anyone will benefit from it.
- When one does good and forbids evil, they will be rewarded.
- [Tirmidhi] Mu’adh bin Jabal (RA) said:
- I said, “O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a deed which will take
me into Paradise and will keep me away from the Hell-fire.”
- He said: “You have asked me about a great matter, yet it is, indeed,
an easy matter for him to whom Allah Almighty makes it easy.
(It is) that you worship Allah without associating anything with Him,
that you perform the prayers, that you pay the zakat, that you fast during Ramadhan,
and that you make the pilgrimage to the House.”
- Then he said:
- “Shall I not guide you to the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield; charity
extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire; and a man’s prayer in the middle of the night.”
- Then he recited: [Al-Sajdah, 32:16-17]
- Then he said: “Shall I not also tell you of the head of the matter, its pillar, and its topmost part?”
- I said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allah.”
- He said: “The head of the matter is Islam (submission to Allah),
the pillar is prayer; and its topmost part is jihad.”
- Then he said: “And shall I not tell you of the basis of all that ?”

Indeed it is a good deed to meet your brother with a cheerful face.

COMMENTARY
- A sahabi narrated that ‘I have not seen anyone who smiled more than the messenger of Allah’.
- Smiling was a habit of Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) so one should try to imitate this.
- Smiling makes one more approachable to others and is a display of kindness.
- One should always smile at people as one doesn’t know what that particular person is going through.
- One should smile at everyone regardless of what religion
they follow as it could lead to them inclining towards Islam.
- Whenever one sees another Muslim smiling they should say the dua:
ِّ ‫ َأضْ َح َك هللاُ ال‬- May Allah keep you smiling.

TRANSLATION
Prophet Muhammad (‫س َّل َم‬

And indeed lying is immorality and indeed immorality leads to hell.

COMMENTARY
- Lying is among the sins of the tongue.
- Lying is to utter false information while knowing what one is saying is not the truth.
- Once a man came to Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ).
- He said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have many bad habits. Which one of them should I give up first?”
- Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) pbuh said:
“Give up telling lies first and always speak the truth.”
- The man promised to do so and went home.
- At night the man was about to go out to steal.
- Before setting out, he thought for a moment about the promise
he made with Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ).
- He said to himself:
“If tomorrow Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) asks me where have I been, what shall I say?
Shall I say that I went out stealing? No, I cannot say that. But nor can I lie.
If I tell the truth, everyone will start hating me and call me a thief. I would be punished for stealing.”
- So the man decided not to steal that night, and gave up this bad habit of stealing.
- Next day, he felt like drinking alcohol, when he was about to do so, he said to himself: “What shall I
say to Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) if he asks me
what did I do during the day? I cannot tell a lie, and if I speak the truth
people will hate me, because a Muslim is not allowed to drink alcohol.”
- So he gave up the idea of drinking alcohol.
- In this way, whenever the man thought of doing something bad,
he remembered his promise to tell the truth at all times.
- One by one he gave up all his bad habits and became a very good Muslim and a very good person.

COMMENTARY
- A ‫ َفا ِج ِر‬can be someone who sins and doesn’t feel anything about it.
- Doing something for the religion doesn’t mean we are safe
from the characteristic of not feeling anything after sinning.
- Some disbelievers who write about Islam find out more about Islam than us.
- Allah can use us as a tool to help others get closer to Islam
when we are not getting closer to the religion ourselves.

COMMENTARY
- This Hadith is talking about when people give more concern
to decorating the masjid instead of the actual worship.
- During the time of Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬
َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) there were masjids that
were simple and made of date palms and one could tell that they were places of worship.
- This Hadith doesn’t say that decoration is not allowed,
rather it says that it shouldn’t take one away from Allah.
- It is disliked as it could be a waste of money.

COMMENTARY
- This shows that the punishments of the grave are real.
- When a person is put into the grave, they will be squeezed.
- For a believer it will be like a hug.
- It will be wide and a door of paradise will be open for him.
- His grave will become a garden like the gardens of paradise.
- He will be shown what could have been his place in the fire.
- For a disbeliever, the grave will become tighter and the doors of hell will be opened for him.
- He will be shown what could have been his place in paradise.
- For a believer who was sinful, the punishments of the grave might be a form of purification for him.
- The grave is scary but with abundant good deeds it can become the most beautiful place on earth.

َ ‫ص َّلى هلّلا ُ َع َل ْي ِه َو‬

The angels don’t accompany a group in which there is a dog and a bell.

COMMENTARY
- If a group of people set out for a journey and they have a dog or a bell with them,
then the angels of mercy and seeking forgiveness will not accompany them on their journey.
- That is because a dog is impure and as for a bell, it is one of the musical instruments
َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
of Satan, as the Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ) has informed us.
- Some scholars have restricted the prohibition to the bell that is hung on animals' necks,
as it produces a melodious sound that impresses the people and causes them to find pleasure in hearing it. - For
this reason, the Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬َ ) called the bell the musical instrument of Satan. - As for the alarm
sound in watches or clocks and the like, they are not included in this prohibition,
because they are not hung on animals, and are only made to ring at specific times.
- The same applies to doorbells which are used for seeking permission to enter.
- There is no problem with these bells and they are not prohibited,
because they are not hung on animals, or whatever is like animals, and there is no pleasure
in hearing them, for which the Prophet Muhammad (‫سلَّ َم‬ َ ‫صلَّى هلّلا ُ َعلَ ْي ِه َو‬
َ ) has prohibited it.
