PROJECT – Sub watershed prioritization of mula river basin
SUMMARY
For todays week I will be discussing about the steps involved in
creation of sub watershed of mula river basin
Creating sub-watersheds in ArcGIS is important for detailed
watershed management, allowing for targeted analysis, resource
allocation, and sustainable planning by breaking down large areas
into smaller, more manageable units for specific needs.
Why Delineate Sub-Watersheds?
     Targeted Management:
Sub-watersheds are smaller, more homogeneous units compared to
entire watersheds, allowing for more precise management strategies
tailored to their unique characteristics.
     Resource Allocation:
By understanding the specific needs and vulnerabilities of each sub-
watershed, resources can be allocated more effectively for
conservation, restoration, and development projects.
     Hydrological Modeling:
Sub-watersheds are crucial for hydrological modeling, allowing for
more accurate predictions of water flow, runoff, and sediment
transport.
     Monitoring and Assessment:
Sub-watersheds provide a framework for monitoring water quality,
assessing land use impacts, and evaluating the effectiveness of
management practices.
     Land Use Planning:
Understanding the spatial distribution of land use within sub-
watersheds helps inform land use planning decisions to minimize
environmental impacts and promote sustainable development.
     Ecosystem Maintenance
Sub-watershed wise planning and management would be beneficial
important for the maintaining the ecosystem, and recharging
groundwater
     Prioritization
Prioritizing the sub-watersheds and implementation of management
practices would be a viable technique to ensure sustainability within
the watershed
METHODOLOGY
  1. ADDING THE DATA IN ARCGIS SOFTWARE AND REPROJECTING
     IT
First the dem data was downloaded and added in arcgis
software after the project to raster tool was used for
     reprojecting the data
  2. PREPROCESSING OF THE DATA
This involves identifying and filling the sinks by using the fill
     tool in arcgis software
The next step is -
Addressing Flats:
Flats or areas with zero slope can also cause issues with flow
direction determination. Preprocessing steps include resolving
flats to ensure a clear flow direction
After that we will use the basin tool to create basin and
convert it into a polygon by using raster to polygon
After that we will right click on the created polygon and
choose data export and create final basin
After flow direction operation is done then we clip the dem
data using the flow direction
For this we will go to raster option under data management
tool here we will select clip option
Here we will use flow direction as the input raster and clip the
basin
After the clipping is done then we will use flow accumulation
tool
After flow accumulation is done then we will perform strahlers
method of stream ordering and stream to feature
After that we will create sub basin by using the pour point
method which is done by creation point shapefile
And use the watershed tool in spatial analyst toolbox
After watershed is created we will convert them to polygon
This is the output of map of sub watershed created by me in
arcgis software Here in my project I have created 5 sub
watershed
For prioritrization
In the upcoming weeks I will be discussing about calculation of
stream number and various other linear aspects
