CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD
In groups, you are going to make a poster about Christmas and New Year celebrations
around the world.
STEP 1
Decide what country you want to talk about. If possible, choose a country with which you
have a special connection.
STEP 2
Find information about your country.
Make sure you have this information:
• Name of the country
• Location of the country
• Typical weather at Christmas
• How do they decorate their houses and the streets?
• What do people wear?
• What do people traditionally eat?
• What types of music or songs are commonly played or sung during Christmas
celebrations in your country?
• Who brings the presents?
• How much do people spend?
• Do people send Christmas cards?
• Celebrations: what days do they celebrate? Which is the most important? How do
people celebrate it?
• Are there any national Christmas traditions (Christmas markets, parades, religious
services, Christmas shows/plays, tv shows/films)
• Are there any local traditions? •
• Fun facts about Christmas in your country.
• Are there any interesting myths, legends, or stories associated with Christmas in
your country?
• Do you think Christmas celebrations in your country have changed over time? If so,
how?
• What makes it very different from Spain?
STEP 3
Present your poster to the class.
Each of you must speak 1,30 minutes minimum.
STEP 4
Each of you must tell a family tradition for Christmas that you think is different from other
family’s traditions. (ex: in my family we eat Chinese food on New Year’s Day. We do that
because one year we all stayed at my dad’s house and of course on New Year´s Day
everything was closed and we had nothing to eat. So we went for Chinese take away. And
since then, we do it every year.)
STEP 5
Say merry Christmas and a happy new year in their language.
