THE DYCIAN CORE VALUES : AN OVERVIEW

This module will give you an overview of the DYCIan Core Values , namely, Veritas
(Truth), Sapientia (Wisdom), Caritas (Charity/Love), Patria (Love of Country/Patriotism),
Excellentia (Excellence) and Fides (Faith/Fidelity). This module will also explain the
interrelationship among these core values.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. enumerate and describe the six DYCIan core values
2. explain the interrelationship of the six core values and
3. analyze the core values manifested in one’s own personal acts of kindness story

THE SIX DYCIAN CORE VALUES

1. VERITAS (Truth) -Envisioning DYCIans who are honest, trustworthy, sincere

and who are people of integrity and authenticity. Moreover, Veritas is also the
awareness of the truth of one’s innate goodness. (Tagline: Live a life of integrity!)
2. SAPIENTIA (Wisdom)- Envisioning DYCIans who make careful, responsible,
thoughtful and wise decisions and who know how to discern, reflect and gain
meaningful insights from experiences. (Tagline: Decisions guided by wisdom!)
3. CARITAS (Charity/Love)- Envisioning DYCIans who are good, kind, loving,
empathetic, compassionate, generous and helpful. (Tagline: Charity and compassion
for the poor!)

A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THE INTERRELATEDNESS OF
THE DYCIAN CORE VALUES

THE INTERRELATEDNESS OF THE DYCIAN CORE VALUES

The DYCIan Core Values are closely-knit together and most of the time many of
them if not all are interrelated and can be manifested even in a single act.

For example, a simple act of helping people who are in need (e.g. donating of relief
supplies to calamity survivors) is a manifestation of Caritas (Charity) because charity is
our capacity to be compassionate and to be of help to others who are in need without
expecting anything in return. Caritas is also described as love put into action.

Such act of helping is considered a good act and also a demonstration of Veritas
(Truth) because the true nature of man is goodness. Scripture says that God made mankind
in His own image, and that everything He made was inherently good, therefore every
person is innately good. When we act according to who we really are and according to our
innate goodness, we become authentic persons who are true to our own nature. When we
commit to our true nature of goodness, our life is marked by truth and integrity.

How is Sapientia (Wisdom) related to the act of helping? Wisdom is the capacity to
apply our knowledge to good use as well as our ability to discern right and wise choices.
A good deed such as helping others who are in need means that we have chosen what is
right, what true, what is good and what is beautiful in the eyes of God. All these are
manifestations that our decision is guided by wisdom.

2
Any good act is a demonstration of Excellentia (Excellence), that is, excellence of
character. A person may be very intelligent but if that person doesn’t have a good heart and
just use his intelligence for his own self -benefit such as gaining material things. fame,
power or in deceiving or hurting others, then his academic excellence is empty, meaningless
and superficial. Furthermore, this person is not using his gift of intelligence in accordance
with God’s purpose and intentions. Our blessing are always meant to bless others and to
glorify God. Excellence must not only be equated with academic achievements or
outstanding skills performance. Instead, we must strive for excellence in all areas of our life
most especially in our character , manners, and quality of our dealings with others.

When we help our fellow Filipinos, it’s a show of Patria (Patriotism) or love for our
country. It is showing our unity, concern and solidarity with our fellow citizens of this
country. In helping or serving our “kapwa Pinoy” , we are actually helping and serving our
own nation.

Finally, the very act of helping those who are in need is a way of heeding one of the
most important commandments of God in the New Testament, that is, “Love your neighbor
as you love yourself.” Heeding God’s commandment is one of the best ways of showing the
value of Fides, that is, our faith and fidelity to God.

From the given examples, the interrelatedness of our DYCIan Core values are clearly
seen. It is therefore hoped that as you take up this course to complement your academic
training, may you open yourself to the challenge of imbibing our DYCIan Core values and
use them as your guiding principles even way after college as you reach for your dreams in
life.

Always remember, every time you do an act of kindness which is done out of love and
compassion and without expecting anything in return, you are manifesting an impressive
array of our DYCIan Core Values.

You may have already possessed most of these values unknowingly and may have
already manifested them to a certain degree at some point in your life. However, a value in
order to be called a real value should be something you deliberately choose from
alternatives, you truly cherish and prize and most all something you act on and practice
consistently. It becomes a part of your life and is clearly manifested not only in your words
but most importantly in your actions,
