The Problems of Gen Z

Gen Z includes people born from the late 1990s to early 2010s. They have grown up with the internet,
smartphones, and better living conditions than previous generations. Many of them have good clothes,
travel experiences, and modern education. However, they also face many problems.

Some Gen Z students feel lonely at home. Their parents are often busy with work and don’t have time to
eat or talk with them. Many of them long for cozy family meals with all members present. But they have
very few opportunities to do this because their parents have to work with clients, attend parties, and take
extra jobs to earn more money. They feel that their parents neither listen to nor understand them. Some
even feel hurt when their parents blame them instead of helping.

2
Students also feel pressure from school and family. Some parents compare their children to others or
punish them when they don’t get high scores. Even excellent students say they are scolded if they get 8
out of 10. Some students feel ashamed when their parents shout at them in front of friends.

Gen Z has problems and feels pressure just like adults. In many cases, they cannot seek sympathy from
their parents, so they commit negative actions. Some of them make friends with bad people, get
addicted, or drop out. When they are doing these things, they feel recognized, listened to attentively, and
supported emotionally — things they cannot find in their families. “Sensitive” and “fragile” are words
that Gen Z use to talk about their generation. Experts say families and schools need to listen and support
them more.
