1 Introduction
Logistics is generally the detailed organization and implementation of a complex operation. In a
general business sense, logistics is the management of the flow of things between the point of origin
and the point of consumption in order to meet requirements of customers or corporations. The
resources managed in logistics can include physical items such as food, materials, animals,
equipment, and liquids; as well as abstract items, such as time and information. The logistics of
physical items usually involves the integration of information flow, materials handling, production,
packaging, inventory, transportation, warehousing, and often security.
Logistics management is the part of supply chain management that plans, implements, and controls
the efficient, effective forward, and reverse flow and storage of goods, services, and related
information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customer's
requirements. The complexity of logistics can be modelled, analyzed, visualized, and optimized by
dedicated simulation softwarei. The minimization of the use of resources is a common motivation in
all logistics fields. A professional working in the field of logistics management is called a logistician.
Figure 1 : Modes of transport
Freight transport is the physical process of transporting commodities and merchandise goods and
cargo. The term shipping originally referred to transport by sea, but in American English, it has been
extended to refer to transport by land or air as well.
Cargo, i.e. merchandise being transported, can be moved through a variety of transportation means
and is organized in different shipment categories. Unit loads are usually assembled into higher
standardized units such as: ISO-containersii, swap bodiesiii or semi-trailers. Especially for very long
distances, product transportation will be likely benefit from using different transportation means:
multimodal transport, intermodal transport (no handling) and combined transport (minimal road
transport). When moving cargo, typical constraints are maximum weight and volume. Operators
involved in transportation include: all train, road vehicles, boats, airplanes companies, couriers,
freight forwardersiv and multi-modal transport operators.

1.1 Importance of Logistics
Even small businesses deal with finding suppliers, if not with transporting merchandise to a store.
Small business owners also conduct distribution logistics with inventory and warehousing. And,
every small business owner can tell you about how they handle reverse logistics, with returned
merchandise or refusal of services. Larger businesses may deal in all four logistic fields.
In the business environment, logistics either have an internal or external focuses (inbound or
outbound). Depending upon the business involved, this part of the chain can be simple or
complicated. For more complicated procedures, third parties often are hired to conduct any one of
the four fields within business logistics.
Third-party logistics (3PL) involves using external individuals or organizations to execute logistics
activities that have traditionally been performed within an organization itself. If, for example, a
company decides to export its product, it may hire a person or organization to help with distribution
logistics. Today, there is a movement toward building fourth-party logistics (4PL), which integrates
3PL competencies and other organizations to design, build, and run comprehensive supply chain
solutions. A 4PL general contractor would manage other 3PLs, truckers, forwarders, custom house
agents, and others, essentially taking responsibility of a complete process for the customer.
Another specialty includes logistics consulting services. Firms in this industry specialize in the
production and distribution of goods, from the first stages of securing suppliers to the delivery of
finished goods to consumers. Such firms give advice on improvements in the manufacturing process
and productivity, product quality control, inventory management, packaging, order processing, the
transportation of goods, and materials management and handling. In the process, these consulting
firms might suggest improvements to the manufacturing process in order to use inputs better,
increase productivity, or decrease the amount of excess inventory. Consulting firms in this segment
of the industry also advise on the latest technology that links suppliers, producers, and customers
together to streamline the manufacturing process.
Even project management requires logistics, as one vein of this science coordinates a sequence of
resources to carry out projects. Typical constraints in project management include scope, time, and
budget, or the same constraints involved in business logistics. The time constraint refers to the
amount of time available to complete a project. The cost constraint refers to the budgeted amount
available for the project. The scope constraint refers to what must be done to produce the project’s
end result.
Meghdoot Logistics and Infra Pvt. Ltd. Page | 2
2 Scope of the project
The scope of my project is effective and efficient transportation of heavy equipments and ODC’s
from one place to another. I am working in a logistics company in which I have to handle variety of
enquiries relating transportation of heavy materials, machines, ODC’s etc. my task is to handle these
enquiries, figure out the total cost over which add some margin and quote the final amount of the
contract to the client for approval. If the quotation gets approved then, my task is to supervise the
whole logistics related activities like loading of the equipment, ODC’s etc. at the origin site,
transportation and the unloading of the same at the destination site. We also deal in import-export
activities wherein lots of containers comes to the port in vessel then, either they are directly loaded
over the trailers and dispatch for the delivery called under the hook, or they are put off the vessel,
taken to CFS(Container freight station) and then loaded over the trailers for the final delivery. So,
these activities also come under our scope.
Our company has a variety of fleet under its name. So, it has also deal in providing fleets to various
big companies which are indulge in variety of big consignments like construction project, refinery
projects, solar projects, wind energy projects etc. All these companies require heavy equipments and
machinery which our company provides them on a rent basis. Activities related to these also come in
our scope.
We have also transport various capacities of cranes like 800 tonnes, 260 tonnes etc from one place to
another. This involves the dissembling of the crane and loaded all the crane parts and components on
the trailers (High-bed, Semi low-bed, Low-bed) to get the transportation done after the transportation
it required to again assemble the crane with the help of the another crane.
When transporting any equipment, ODC’s etc from one place to another, first thing we need to do is
route survey from where our vehicle goes to the destination. After the route survey, making of
quotation gets starts and then this quotation handed over to the client, if approved then the core
logistics activities come into play in which we made a logistics planning and execution of the plans
to get the work done on time effectively and efficiently to satisfy our client.

3 Limitations of the project
Following are the limitations of our project:
➢ We didn’t get the opportunity to handle air transport projects and intermodal transport
projects.
➢ Maintaining a relationship with vendors and clients is very important as they can drive the
business.
➢ Time and money are the big constraints when transporting heavy equipments and ODC’s.
➢ We have only dealt in transporting heavy machineries, ODC’s and equipments but didn’t get
involved in transportation of refrigerated products, FMCG products and other light weight
products.
➢ Selecting a business giving client and vendor is very crucial for our project.
➢ Risk factor is a very crucial parameter in our project as when we transporting an ODC, then
we have to take care of our surrounding and ensuring no harm to our surroundings as well as
the ODC.
➢ Our project is very time consuming as sometime we have dismantle public and government
properties to get the transportation of the over sized materials completed and built back the
property to the original.
➢ There is huge difference between what we plan to do and what we actually do.
These are some limitations of our project which restrict us to some extent when we are working on a
assigned project.

4 Data analysis
4.1 Transportation of 800 tonnes crane from Krishnapatnam port to Chennai port
This enquiry involves the transportation of Kobelco 800 tonnes cranes from Krishnapatnam port to
Chennai port which is approximately about 200 kms. The client gives us the packing list of the crane
components listing all the components comprises the crane which we have to transport. From this we
are asked to make Logistics plan for this crane in which we have to mention what part of the crane
loaded on what type of trailer and what is the cost incurred from that trailer to transport that
particular part. As this the very huge project so, care must be taken while selecting the type of trailer
as all the components weigh different and of different dimensions so, it require different capacity
trailers to transport.
Each part is transported by different type trailer depending upon the dimensions of the components
and weight of the components. If any component exceeds the standard size of 40*8*7 then in case of
high bed company must pay RTO challan for that component. So, while transporting this crane all
these things comes into account.
On next page there is Logistics plan of the whole project of transporting 800 tonnes crane which
includes which components loaded on which type of trailer and the associated cost of hiring that
trailer. To transport the crane company need 64 trailers of different variety includes: high-bed, semi
low-bed and low-bed with three different types of variant: 3516, 4018 and 4923. Also it includes
total cost of the project which comes out to be INR Rs 24,60,900.

4.2 Transportation of Caterpillar dump truck from Rajasthan to Gujarat
This is the enquiry in which we have to transport caterpillar dump truck from Agucha mines,
Bhilwara, Rajasthan to Mundra port, Gujarat for export to other foreign country. Dump truck is about
40 feet in length, 24 feet wide and 15 feet high. The major challenge in transporting this dump truck
is its huge width of 24 feet. It weighs about 100 ton. First it gets dissembled, and then each
component gets loaded on the hydraulic axles and low bed for transportation. The component which
our company has to transport loaded on hydraulic axle (piece of 6 axles).
Figure 2 : Component of Dump Truck loaded on the hydraulic axles
We have made the final quotation for the client which includes: Basic cost, Mob/De-mob cost and
Rental cost. On next page there is a full quotation that I have made in excel.
The time taken to transport this dump truck is expected about 12-15 days. After which this will be
loaded onto the vessel for export. This consignment is very challenging for the company as this type
of consignment had never been done by the company so far. So, completing the project on time and
effectively comes out to be one of the major success for the company.

4.3 Transportation of gas tank containing nitrogen from Mumbai to Gujarat
This is the enquiry in which we have to transport a gas tank containing nitrogen from Vikhroli,
Mumbai to Jamnagar, Gujarat. This gas tank is very huge in size of about 36 feet in length, 6 feet
wide and 9 feet high. It weighs about 57 tonnes. The type of vehicle used to transport this gas tank is
hydraulic axle (piece of 6 axles).
This tank directly goes to the reliance refinery located in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which is India’s largest
refinery. This tank dispatched from Vikhroli from 8th May 2018 from Godrej compound. We have
asked to make a final quotation for this consignment. On next page there a full quotation for this
consignment.
This consignment is also very important for us as we have learnt a lot from this project. We learn
various things and jargon of the transportation industry like Bill T also known as lorry receipt, we
have seen fitness certificate of the hydraulic axles and prime mover. We have also personally visit
the Godrej compound to inspect the consignment before its leaving to Jamnagar, Gujarat.
Below is the image of the consignment loaded on hydraulic axles (piece of 6 axles)

4.4 Transporting 200 40’ container per month to Rewa, Madhya Pradesh from Nhava
Sheva port, Mumbai for India’s biggest Solar Energy project
This is the project over which our company puts its all focus. This is the project in which we have to
transport 40 feet container (Factory stuffing) from Nhava Sheva port, Mumbai to Rewa, Madhya
Pradesh. Per month 200 such containers we have to transport and come back. This is not till our
project is limited but we got a full contract involving unloading of container from the vessel, taken it
to CFS (container freight station), pay custom duty, stamp duty and other clearing charges and then
transporting the container to India’s biggest solar energyv site located in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.
This is the project which provides knowledge about import-export deals and other shipping line
jargons used in daily basis.
This is a very big project, till now our company didn’t get this type of work, so, it must be a
challenging task for the company and results in a big achievement if done carefully and properly.
The project starts from June end 2018. On the next page is the quotation for transporting one 20’
container from Nhava Sheva port, Mumbai to Rewa, Madhya Pradesh.
We have given in-charge of this project. We’ve made a list of all the CFS (Container freight station)
located in JNPT, Mumbai and also their contact details and finally, make an individual call to
everyone and enquire about their CFS charges, also sent a formal mail to get the clear response from
their side. Also, we have visited the Seabird CFS located at JNPT port for providing lorry receipt to
the drivers.

fleet)
Kobelco 2600i is the 260 tonnes crawler crane bought by Meghdoot Road lines Pvt. Ltd. the crane directly
transported to our company’s yard. We have seen the unloading of the crane parts from another 60 tonnes
tyre mounted crane and also the assembly of the crane parts by the same crane. It took about 2 days to
complete the whole procedure of assembling the crane. This is the biggest fleet bought by our company
which definitely generate great revenue for our company in the future.
Below is the detail of all the vehicle/trailers, which we have made in excel, by which the whole crane gets
transported. Also the parts each vehicle carries is also written over there and its value also. The value of
Kobelco 2600i is about 8.31 crores.

5 Observations
This section is segregated into two parts – Transportation and Rental hiring. Following are some
observations:
TRANSPORTATION
➢ We recognise that the transportation sector is still an unorganised sector in India.
➢ In this sector there are variety of works relating to transportations of heavy equipments and
ODC’s.
➢ It is a very critical job to accomplish a particular task as any type of delay in transportation
leads to bad consequences. For example: our company transport a gas tank containing
compressed nitrogen gas from Mumbai to Reliance refinery in Gujarat, if this consignment
gets delayed then it will affect the working of the refinery sometimes at the worst leads to
stoppage of the refinery work for some days.
➢ Any type of procrastination in the consignment lead increase in the prices of some of the
FMCG products.
➢ In this industry there is a lack of skilled drivers.
➢ This industry is still indulged in bribery or unusual payments after many efforts taken by the
central or state government. A huge sum of money is given for police entry, RTO challan (in
case of ODC’s) as a bribe.
➢ This industry requires precision, accuracy and care while transporting any material, machine
or ODCs. Prevention against damage must get an attention.
➢ Assembly of huge cranes and man-lifts requires great precision and carefulness as any type of
carelessness and inattention leads to a great damage to the asset which in turn leads to lose of
huge amount of money also.
➢ While transporting an ODC, the first step should be site survey as in India the roads are not
properly build, so if we have to transport the ODC we have to visit the site and define the
route from which the ODC gets transported.
➢ Living of drivers is very bad which leads to harmful effects on their health due to which this
sector is still a part of unorganized sector.
➢ Before transporting a material, an ODC etc one must understand what it actually is? What is
its description? So that care must be taken while transporting the same.
Meghdoot Logistics and Infra Pvt. Ltd. Page | 24
RENTAL HIRING
➢ This first requires a proper understanding of the market. As to give asset on rent to another
party is a very crucial task and require steady flow of response in terms of information and
payments from both side.
➢ It becomes crucial also because there is a lack of skilled drivers and operators.
➢ Return on investment is quite low in this scenario in this industry.
➢ Proper maintenance and servicing is required.
➢ Proper marketing of the company is required so that the company can get easily recognized
by the market and gets a business from them.
➢ Living of drivers and operators is very bad which leads to harmful effects on their health due
to which this sector is still a part of unorganized sector.
➢ One must keep a tracking record of the asset so that one can easily assess at what location the
fleet is working? For how many hours it operates?
Meghdoot Logistics and Infra Pvt. Ltd. Page | 25
6 Conclusion
Here we concluded that the transportation sector is still an unorganised sector after repetitive action
taken by the government. This industry/sector has a scope for huge business as there are plenty of
varieties but the presence of unusual transfer of money and bribery makes it still a backward sector
in India.
We have made an excel sheet for making a quotation for every inquiry relating to transportation of
heavy materials or equipments through hydraulic axles and trailers. This can reduce the time
consumptions as this excel sheet is made with the help of formulas so we have to type the initials
only rest the whole quotation gets changed accordingly.
We have also made a brochure for our company so that we can easily advertise our company in front
of those who doesn’t know about our company. Also in future if company recruits a new employee
then this brochure helps him/her to get to know what the company is actually doing and what their
objectives are. This helps our company to train their employees easily.
Prevention, care and accuracy are the three important pillar of this industry upon which it works. As
we mentioned earlier while transporting a cargo, equipment or an ODC care must takes to avoid
damages to the same.
This sector provides a lot of things to learn. The tenure of 2 months with Meghdoot Logistics and
Infra Pvt. Ltd. provides me a great platform to understand transportation industry and land logistics
to the core.
Meghdoot Logistics and Infra Pvt. Ltd. Page | 26
7 Our contribution
We both are recruited as a Management trainee in Logistics and Operations department by
Meghdoot Logistics and Infra Pvt. Ltd. In this tenure of 2 months, we have been a part of many
projects of transporting heavy equipments and machinery from one place to another. Also we have
learnt a lot about land logistics and shipping terms. Our mentor Mr. Rahul Purohit (Director) taught
us a lot of things about land logistics, import-export, transportation and various types of fleets used
this industry. In this period of our internship we have gone to various places such as JNPT
(Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) Mumbai, where we saw CFS (Container Freight Station) and also
make a lorry receipt which is an important document, in which information about consignor,
consignee, vehicle and description of the material loaded is written, and is required to pass / allow
the vehicle for transporting the material to its destination. Also we have seen our company’s yard
where we saw high bed trolley, low bed trolley, semi-low bed trolley, Volvo FM-400 prima,
hydraulic axles (Piece of 6-axles and 4-axles), fork-lift, man-lift, tyre mounted crane and crawler
crane (Kobelco 2600i). Also we have seen a Godrej Compound located in Vikhroli, Mumbai, where
we have seen warehouses, overhead cranes with the help of which heavy material gets loaded on the
trailers and hydraulic axles. As we were a part of the project in which compressed nitrogen gas tank
is transported to Reliance refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat that is because we went to the Godrej
compound.
We have also made a logistics plan of transporting 800 tonnes cranes from Krishnapatnam port to
Chennai port in excel which we have mention in a data analysis section. This plan includes the
description of each of the crane component and their dimensions which are supposed to transport and
also includes the information about on which type of trailer each of them is supposed to transport and
what are the charges of the same. This logistics plan also highlights the total logistics cost of the
consignment and total number of trailers required in this project.
We have also made a permanent format in excel regarding the quotations, of the inquiry for
transporting heavy equipment on hydraulic-axles, which given to the client for final proposal. As
earlier for every inquiry a new quotation is made which is very time consuming when doing on a
paper. So, we have made a general format in excel with the help of formulas so for any type of
inquiry relating to hydraulic axles is made within a few minutes by simply putting the numbers. So it
become very easy and less time consuming for quoting rates of the consignment to the client.
We have also made a permanent format in excel regarding the quotations, of the inquiry for
transporting materials on trailers same as hydraulic axles so that it become easy and less time
consuming for us to quote charges to the client and maintain a steady flow of responses.
Meghdoot Logistics and Infra Pvt. Ltd. Page | 27
When transporting any equipment, material or ODC by hydraulic axles one must take permission
from MINISTRY OF ROAD TRANSPORTATION AND HIGHWAYS (MORTH). We have learnt
how to make a MORTH. This is basically an online application form which must be submitted to get
permission from national highways to pass the consignment. MORTH permission is necessary in
case of transportation by hydraulic axles only not in the case of normal trailers.
For many of the inquiries regarding transportation, we both have talked to many transporters
regarding the availability of the vehicle (trailers) so that we can act as a third party logistics (3 PL) to
transport the material of our client at a nominal rate with some margin from one place to another.
This experience helps me to learn how to talk to vendors and suppliers, and act as a representative of
our company in front of the market to get a business. At the start we both were a little hesitated
wondered how to talk to vendors and transporters but after 2-3 calls we’d understand and learn how
to talk and what to talk. So, this becomes a very nice experience for us.
We have also learnt various jargons / terminologies used in this industry. We have learnt a lot of
concepts regarding shipping terms which we have mention in a basic terminologies section. When
we import something what documents are necessary to be there of the transportation such as Letter of
credit (LC), bill of lading (BL), bill of entry (BE), custom charges etc I have seen all these things.
And also understands the importance of each of these things.
We have also contacted to various CFS (Container Freight Station) located at JNPT (Jawaharlal
Nehru Port Trust) to get the charges regarding their panel shipping line and non-panel shipping lines
and also their DPD (Direct Port Delivery) charges. We have maintain a record of these CFS’ in an
excel file also.
We have also design a brochure for company in which we have mention the details of the company,
company owned fleets, and all type of fleets used in this industry etc.

We have experienced many things during my internship program. From our experience with the
company, following are some suggestions to the company from my side:
➢ There must be a structured organisational hierarchy for better execution and completion of
various consignments.
➢ If this company works according to the pure project organisation, in which each person is
assigned to each consignment and is responsible for every outcome and challenges faced
during the execution, then the efficiency of the organisation can be improved.
➢ There must be a transparency in the flow of information and communication for better
outcomes.
➢ There must be decision making skill in every individual. Only big issues must be discussed
with the director of the company not the minor ones. For small issues there must be skilled
staffs who know how to resolve them.
➢ There must a proper database of all the fleets owned by the company.
➢ There must be one marketing person who is responsible for “marketing the company’s assets,
goes for big corporate meeting to market the company to introduce our company to everyone
and getting business from the market” and one operations person who is responsible for
“supervision of all the consignment executed by the company, take care of the operations part
of the company and maintain a proper database of all fleets owned by the company.
➢ Provide a proper training to the drivers and operators if possible or else try to find a skilled
driver and operator who has a thorough knowledge of the machine assigned to him.
