SUSTAINABILITY
The integration of environmental health, social equity and economic vitality in
order to create thriving, healthy, diverse and resilient communities for this
generation is often refers to SUSTAINABILITY.
As a child of my parents who migrated from Rural Northern Ghana to the city of
Accra, I have encountered many life challenges and experiences and one of those
experiences that awaken me to appreciate nature and preserve it, is when I
travelled back to my village at the Northern part of Ghana after my Senior High
School. Bush burning by human activity has caused a total land degradation and
made farming in my community unproductive. As a person who like to create an
algorithm for solving problems, I wanted to tackle this one too.
Upon arrival in my village, on the third day, I planned how to tackle these
practice and to bring relief to my people in the village. With some few meetings I
formed an irrigation and tree planting Association to help revive the land of our
birth.
Sustainability has been a passion of mine before I met this situation in my village
which needed urgent attention. These experiences instilled in me a sense of
responsibility to act as a steward of the environment and inspired my interest in
exploring innovative solutions to environmental challenges. With this
experience, our tree planting Association brought back farming sustainability in
my Village.
At Colorado College, I plan to actively engage in sustainability efforts both
inside and outside the classroom. Academically, I intend to pursue courses and
research opportunities focused on Agricultural development, Food security, and
environmental policy. These areas align with my long-term goal of contributing
to solutions that balance economic development.
On campus, I hope to join sustainability-focused student associations such as
promoting green environment practices in dormitories.
