MACHINE DESIGN 1 (ME 418)


DESIGN WORK NO. 2A
Second Semester, AY 2024- 2025

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Use short bond paper (8.5 x 11 inches), with 1 x 1-inch margin (invisible)
2. Write the problem, given, required and solution.
3. Handwritten/engineering lettering.
4. Submit the soft copy in google classroom and keep the hardcopy and submit as
required
5. Submit on time. Late submission will not be accepted.

PROBLEM 1
A bushed pin type flexible coupling is used to connect two shafts and transmit 5kW power
at 720 rpm. Shafts, keys, and pins are made of commercial steel (σ y = 240 N/mm2) and
the factor of safety is 3. The flanges are made of grey cast iron FG 200 (σ u = 200 N/mm2)
and the factor of safety is 6. Assume, τy = 0.55σy and τu = 0.5σut. There are 4 pins. The
pitch circle diameter of the pins is 4 times the shaft diameter. The permissible shear stress
for the pins is 35 N/mm2. The permissible bearing pressure for the rubber bushes is 1
N/mm2. The keys have a square cross-section. Calculate (a) diameter of the shafts, (b)
dimensions of the key, (c) diameter of the pins, and (d) outer diameter of the bushes.

PROBLEM 2

The shaft and the flange of the marine engine are to be designed for flange coupling, in
which the flange is forged on the end of the shaft. The parameters to consider are; Power
of the engine = 5MW, Speed of the engine = 100 rpm, allowable shear stress in bolts and
shaft = 60 MPa, number of bolts = 8, pitch circle diameter of bolts is 1.6 times the
diameter of the shaft. Find the diameter of shaft, diameter of bolt, and thickness of flange.

PROBLEM 3

A grid type flexible coupling is used to transmit power of 100 Hp at 1500 rpm. The shaft
diameter is 2 inches and is to be keyed to avoid the relative motion with the hub. The shaft
and the hub (with 1-inch slot length) are made of AISI 4140 OQT at 800 oF, the key of
cold drawn AISI 1020 and the connecting strip of AISI 1035 WQT at 1000 oF. The
connecting strip is 2 inches from the center of the shaft and has 30 folds. The factor of
safety is 4. Design the strip thickness considering size ratio of 10 (h/t=10).
