Seat
assignment

We encourage interaction amongst our

passengers! We made a conscious decision
to not assign seating. Having used similar
services across New Zealand, Vietnam,
and South Africa none have assigned
seating. We feel open seating works best.
We ask that passengers be friendly and
help other couples if requested. Take any
seat and make new amigos.

Seatbelts
& Drivers
All seats are fitted with seatbelts for your
safety. You must wear your seatbelt at all
times. Our professional drivers follow
rotation schedules, we use 2 drivers for all
long routes. The alternate driver uses the Toilets
driver cabin below the passenger area
every 4.5 hours to rest. The bus toilets are for urine ONLY. We ask
all our passengers to respect this rule.

Bolivian buses
Buses on the Bolivian side of the border are smaller and can NOT include onboard toilet.
The route from Copacabana to La Paz requires a LAKE CROSSING at the STRAIT OF TIQUINA.
- All passengers must take a small public passenger boat across the lake (included in your pass).
- The bus must float across on a specially built transport raft.
All buses operating this route are restricted in size and weight. No company operating this
route has an onboard toilet due to these size restrictions.

Pick Ups & Drop Offs

All of our passes include a free pick up/drop off service. However, for obvious reasons we
can’t pick up from EVERY hotel/hostel. We limit our service to 90% of hotels/hostels. When
booking your ticket you can choose your pick up location from the drop list. If you have
booked a hotel/hostel that happens to be far off the grid, you may need to make your way
to a central pick up point. At each place, we have a main pick up location that is very easy
to locate. In Huacachina village and Paracas village we ask all passengers to move to the
central location before pick up. Traffic restrictions in these places and the size of our buses
make this necessary by law and also far more practical for our passengers.

WORDS FROM
THE CO-FOUNDERS
Peru Hop was born in 2013 from the idea of creating an alternative way to travel around Peru
in a safe and independent manner. Our goal is to offer the chance to see more of Peru’s
hidden secrets on our journey and meet other like-minded travellers. In 2014 we extended
our route to Bolivia; the painful border crossing was something we had done ourselves
and wanted to fix. We established close relationships with immigration on both sides of the
border, employed fantastic guides and have created the only safe and painless way to cross
to and from Bolivia. We are backpackers, who fell in love with Peru & Bolivia (maybe one of
us was persuaded by a girl) and we love showing people that there is a safe way to travel
around these amazing countries.

We love taking you to places that we as travelers had missed but discovered from living
here. We feel we are living the dream. Although it’s stressful at times (...we are all going
grey!) we are fortunate to have built a fantastic team around us. Our team will do everything
within their power to ensure you have a safe, fun trip and fall in love with these fantastic
countries as we have ourselves. Thank you for trusting us with your travels. Please let us
know if you have any questions or feedback along the way!

Gracias y saludos
Will, Conor, Pete and Paolo

HOW DOES
PERU HOP WORK
Peru Hop is the first Hop on / Hop off bus service in Peru. We have a recommended amount
of time at each destination based on our expertise, but if you fall in love with a place, then
hop off and get on the next bus! All our passes are valid for 1 year in 1 direction, so you can
literally take as long as you want at each place or follow our recommended schedule!

BECOME A HOPSTER
Hop on the bus and meet your Peru Hop guide, let him or her guide
you and show you the hidden gems of Peru. Receive your HOP
wristband which gives you access to exclusive HOPSTER discounts
along your travels!

EXPLORE THE REAL PERU

The best thing about Peru Hop is that not only do we cover all of
these world famous destinations, but we actually stop between the
destinations to see places that normally tourists don’t get to see.

HOP LOGIN
For bus schedule and pickup location changes, we have created a unique Hop Login system
on our websites meaning you can log in and change your own bus schedules and pickup
locations without needing to email us or call us. This is faster, more convenient, and puts
you in control!

How the Hop Login Works:

1.Check the reservation ID on your
booking confirmation email.
2. Go to peruhop.com / boliviahop.com
3. Click the HOP LOGIN on the top
right-hand corner of the website.
4. Login and make any change you
want up to 12hrs before bus departure.

SHORT TOUR: 2 DAY FROM LIMA

RESERVATION ID - USE TO ACCESS YOUR HOP LOGIN TO CHANGE BUSES AND PICKUP LOCATIONS

A. The Hop Login allows you to see what buses you are booked on and what pickup
locations you have selected, so you can double check if everything is as you want it to be or
make any changes you wish.
B. Your Peru Hop guides CANNOT change any of your bus reservations. You will need to
update all of your departures using your Hop Login. Should you choose to ‘hop off’ and stay
longer in a city, it is your responsibility to update your buses accordingly.
C. Always remember that you can change your buses up until 12 hours before your next bus
is due to depart (subject to availability). IMPORTANT - Should you fail to update your
reservation and subsequently miss your bus, you have technically lost that part of the trip.
Penalty fees may apply to reinstate your travel pass should you miss a scheduled departure.
D. If you reserved as part of a GROUP BOOKING, any update or change that one person
makes via the Hop Login will be applied to ALL the reservations within your group.

NOTE: Making your own way? Should you decide to make alternative travel arrangements for any leg
of your trip please select (MAKING OWN WAY) on the system as your pick up location for this journey.

• Free walking tours are a great way to get to know this huge city.
• Evening visit to the Circuito Magico del Agua (Lima’s famous magic water fountain park).
• Eat Peruvian cuisine, especially seafood. Lima is Latin America’s top culinary destination.
• Visit the catacombs under the convent of San Francisco and see the remains of 75000

Lima is an amazing and underrated city. It has a lot to offer for every type of traveller with its
oceanfront setting, world-class cuisine, incredible museums, booming nightlife and colonial
era architecture.
The main attraction in Lima is its historical downtown area. The historic centre of Lima is on
the UNESCO World Heritage List and despite being damaged by a series of earthquakes
this century, is a great place to get a feel of Peru’s intricate, complex history.
Plaza de Armas: Nearly every city and town in Peru has a central square known as the ‘Plaza
de Armas’ and Lima’s is one of the biggest and most impressive. This colourful main square
was the foundation of the ‘City of the kings’ in 1535 and was Lima’s first public square.
The Presidential Palace: The home to Peru’s president. Built by Francisco Pizarro back in
1535 it has been the residence of all the Peruvian presidents to date.

walking tours, the one in the afternoon covers the highlights of Miraflores and one in the

LIMA SAFETY TIPS:

• Be careful using ATM outlets and avoid using them at night if possible.
• Be aware of pickpockets and never take your passport or credit card out unless 100%
necessary.
• Lima city centre can be dangerous at night, stay vigilant.
• Be very careful whenever stopping a taxi. Some try to scam travellers or in some cases rob

• Rent quad bikes and drive around the desert.

• Try delicious seafood.
• Golden Shadow Tour

Paracas is perfect for all types of travellers. With its relaxed vibes, this Pacific town has a
surprising variety of activities to choose from. The Paracas National Reserve is one of the
main attractions in Paracas, its main function is to preserve the marine life ecosystem. You
will find many different species of birds here, most sitting on the shore’s edge basking in the
sunshine that reflects off the water.

Just 30 minutes away by boat from the Pacific Coast lie the Ballestas Islands, also referred
to as the “Poor Man’s Galapagos”. On a tour of these islands you get to see a lot of animals
up close and in their natural habitat.

MUST SEE IN PARACAS:

• Watch the sunset along the Pacific coast.
• Witness the 2000 year old Candelabro sand sculpture that is etched into the Paracas
Peninsula and can be seen from the speedboat on the way to the Ballestas Islands.

Like mentioned before, this beach has a really relaxing vibe and you will feel it even more while
watching the sun set along the Pacific coast. Just grab a couple of beers and enjoy the view.

PARACAS SAFETY TIPS:

• Bring sunblock and a hat, it is sunny all year round.
• Bring a light jacket for the boat tour to the Islas Ballestas.
• Never carry your passport/credit card unless 100% necessary
• Avoid using ATM machines at night.
• If moving on to Huacachina after Paracas make sure you take cash out from the ATM while
you can. While there are two ATM machines in Paracas there are NONE in Huacachina.

PARACAS BALLESTAS ISLANDS
• Nicknamed the “Peru´s Mini Galapagos” famous for their abundant wildlife.
• They are a group of rocky islands located off the Pacific coast near the town of Paracas.
• The islands are home to thousands of birds and animals including penguins, sea
lions, Inca terns, pelicans and dolphins.
• The islands are protected, you cannot swim with the animals and you cannot walk
on the islands themselves.
• See great views of El Candelabro sand sculpture on the way out to the islands.
2 HOUR SPEEDBOAT TOUR - DAILY AT 8AM (OR 10AM)
• TOUR OPERATOR – PARACAS EXPLORER - speedboat is safe and very comfortable,
sea-sickness should not be an issue.
• MEETING TIME – 07:45am (OR 9:45am FOR 10AM TOUR)
• MEETING PLACE – LOS FRAYLES RESIDENCIAL HOTEL - (NO HOSTEL PICK UP)
• DURATION – 2 hours*
• WHAT TO BRING/WEAR – The wind at sea can be quite cold, so wear a jumper or jacket,
a cap and sunblock, make sure to bring your sunglasses and of course your camera as well.

HOW TO BOOK ANY OF THE TOURS?

1. ON BOARD THE BUS - direct with your Peru Hop guide. CASH ONLY
2. ADVANCE BOOKING - via the Peru Hop webpage tour section. CARD ONLY

Keep in mind, the speedboat leaves the pier promptly at 8:00am or 10:00am so you must be
at the meeting place 15 minutes before departure.
* NOTE: The duration of this tour is shortened to 1 hour and a half during holiday periods (e.g.
Easter weekend, end of July).

As with everything on Peru Hop, the choice is yours, but whether you do this tour with our
partner operator, or another operator, we strongly recommend visiting the Ballestas Islands…
it would be a shame to come all this way and not see Peru’s mini version of the Galapagos.

NOTE: None of the extra tours are operated by Peru Hop – we work with the local communities. Our
partner operators are NOT the cheapest NOR the most expensive. We work with these operators as they
are safe, reliable and give the best value for money based on our years of experience trying all operators.

HUACACHINA
CITY GUIDE
MUST DO IN HUACACHINA:
CAUTION

NEVER LEAVE BAGS

UNATTENDED.
BE VERY CAREFUL
WITH YOUR
BELONGINGS AT
ALL TIMES.
• Sandboarding and Dune Buggying.
• Pisco vineyard tour. (Free Peru Hop tour)
• Walk around the famous oasis village.

This tiny desert Oasis village is located close to the city of Ica in the heart of the Peruvian
desert. The small natural lagoon and palm trees are surrounded on all sides by huge natural
sand dunes. Home to less than 100 local people, every day fresh influxes of travellers arrive
to do one of the must-do activities in Peru…sandboarding down the famous dunes!

The local guides take visitors on a tour of these dunes on incredibly powerful (and safe!)
dune buggies, flying over large humps in what seems to be a never-ending desert of sand.
This in itself is awesome, but it gets even better as you have the option to sandboard down
some of these huge dunes! Snowboarding is world famous, but sandboarding is thrilling,
faster and much cheaper…an absolute must do for anybody who visits Huacachina.

As well as Huacachina, Ica is also famous for its pisco and vineyards. Pisco is the national
drink of Peru, and Ica is often called the home of pisco. We take you to a pisco vineyard tour
where you will discover the history of pisco, see how it is made, as well as get to try a few
samples of this deliciously refreshing drink.

Peruvians are very proud of their pisco and you simply cannot come to Ica without having a
few glasses of pisco!

MUST SEE IN HUACACHINA:

• Climb the dunes in the late evening and witness a memorable desert sunset.

The incredible view of the sunset from the sand dunes is one you should not miss if you
make it to Huacachina. Scramble up the dunes on foot or catch the sunset at the end of a
dune buggy tour.

HUACACHINA SAFETY TIPS:

• Huacachina is very small, try to bring cash with you as there are NO ATM outlets.
• Bring sunscreen, it is nearly always sunny and hot.
• Beware of pickpockets and never carry your passport/credit card unless 100% necessary.
• When sandboarding lie down on the board: Do not stand up! Every year this causes many
serious accidents.

HUACACHINA SANDBOARDING
The incredible desert oasis of Huacachina has quickly become Peru’s sandboarding
capital. Hop on a dune buggy and be taken on a roller coaster ride through the
stunning desert to the very top of the LARGEST DUNES in South America. Buggy up,
sandboard down! Sandboarding should be done lying flat on your stomach face first.
Accidents happen frequently to people who attempt to stand up on the boards - do
not ruin your trip. We strongly recommend this tour, not just for the adrenaline rush,
but for the stunning panoramic views of the desert and oasis.

NAZCA
CITY GUIDE
MUST DO IN NAZCA:
CAUTION

NEVER LEAVE BAGS

UNATTENDED.
BE VERY CAREFUL
WITH YOUR
BELONGINGS AT
• Fly over the Nazca Lines. ALL TIMES.

• Climb up to the top of the Nazca Lines viewing tower to see 3 of

the Nazca Line drawings (included in Peru Hop passes).
• Visit the ancient Cantalloc Aqueducts.

It is believed that the Nazca Lines were some form of religious worship associated with the
availability of water for crop growth (Nazca is one of the driest places in the world). Whatever
their reason, these lines are as fascinating as they are mysterious to both historians and tourists.
They were officially made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994. The lines vary in size from
30 metres to 200 meters and often take on the form of animals such as monkeys, lizards
and sharks among others. The lines are best viewed from above, and there are many tour
companies offering flights over the lines (the lines stretch for about 80km). These tour flights last
30 minutes and cost approximately $80. They offer the best possible view of the lines.

Alternatively, there is a viewing tower that helps you see up to 3 of the lines from an elevated
point. This stop is included with Peru Hop passes and makes for a good photo opportunity
for those hopsters who decide not to book a flight.

NAZCA SAFETY TIPS:

• Beware of some unsafe tour companies, accidents have happened on some of these
flights so please do your research.
• Beware of pickpockets and never carry your passport/credit card unless 100% necessary.
• Avoid using ATM outlets at night.
• If staying overnight, discuss with your guide as to what hostels they recommend.

NAZCA NAZCA LINES
Take a flight over the world-famous Nazca Lines! These lines, some over 2,000 years
old, have blown away historians and archaeologists for hundreds of years, and even
today there is no consensus as to how or why they were created…some even believe
they were created by aliens!
They vary from simple lines and geometric forms to diverse and complex figures.
Spreading over almost 80km of desert and mysteriously can only be interpreted from
above (yet they date from a time way before there was any means of aerial flight...). A
flight over the Nazca Lines is the ONLY way to do justice to this incredible UNESCO
World Heritage Site and the only way to see the most iconic figures including the
hummingbird, monkey and spider.

FLIGHT TOUR – DAILY 10AM – 2PM

• TOUR OPERATOR – AERONASCA
• TIME – The time of the flight can be arranged when you book with your Peru Hop guide. Flight
conditions are best during the morning when winds are favorable. Flight times vary and it is

AREQUIPA
CITY GUIDE
CAUTION

NEVER LEAVE BAGS

UNATTENDED.
BE VERY CAREFUL
WITH YOUR
TOURS AND SIGHTSEEING IN AREQUIPA: BELONGINGS AT
ALL TIMES.
• Tour or trek the Colca Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world.
• Visit the sillar route where you can observe the ancestral mining and stonemasonry
techniques used to extract the city´s building blocks, and see works of art sculpted directly
into the white rocks.
• Jump in the adventure of rafting down the Chili River, once in a lifetime experience!
• Walking tour of Arequipa Historical Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
• Visit the Monasterio de Santa Catalina and step back in time more than 400 years, a fascinating
collection of coloured buildings in Iberian style, formerly home to 450 nuns.
• Try the local cuisine at one of the ‘Picanterias’ around Arequipa.

The main attraction in the Arequipa area is the Colca Valley. Home to one of the world’s
deepest canyons, reaching a depth of 4,160 meters, it is also home to the famous Andean
Condor birds. The valley also has many examples of Inca agricultural terraces, irrigation
systems, and hot springs.

For all the architecture lovers, the city of Arequipa is known as “La Ciudad Blanca” or the
“White City” due to the beautiful white structures seen around the city built out of “sillar”, a white
rock obtained from the numerous nearby volcanoes. The historical centre of the city is home to
numerous religious convents, monasteries, Catholic churches and museums. For this reason,
the Historical Centre has been named a Cultural World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The local cuisine in Arequipa is arguably the most varied in all of Peru and while in Arequipa
we encourage you to check out many of the traditional “Picanterias” to try out the local dishes
such as Rocoto Relleno (Can be quite spicy so make sure to ask in advance!!).

MUST SEE IN AREQUIPA:

• Go see the Mummy Juanita also known as the Inca Ice Maiden, the ice preserved mummy
of a small child who was killed as an offering to the Inca gods.
• Check out the exhibitions from one of the many museums in Arequipa:
- Arequipa Art Museum
- Archaeological Museum of the Santa Maria Catholic University
- Archaeological Museum of the National University of San Agustín
- Sanctuary Museum

AREQUIPA SAFETY TIPS:

• Be careful using ATM outlets and avoid using them at night when possible.
• Carry small change – many taxis/small shops don’t have change, so try to use small notes/coins.
• Be aware of pickpockets and NEVER take your passport or credit card anywhere unless
100% necessary.

CITY GUIDE
MUST DO IN CUSCO:
CAUTION

NEVER LEAVE BAGS

UNATTENDED.
BE VERY CAREFUL
WITH YOUR
BELONGINGS AT
• Take a tour to Machu Picchu, with many options to choose from. ALL TIMES.

• Venture to the Sacred Valley.

• Go white water rafting (Urubamba/ Apurimac rivers)
• Visit Rainbow Mountain
• Quad biking in Maras and Moray.
• Horse riding.
• Take part in the lively Cusco nightlife.

Most travellers use Cusco as their base to begin a tour or trek to Machu Picchu. This Inca
citadel is one of the Seven Wonders of the World for a reason - dating back to the 15th
century, it is believed to have been a royal estate or sacred religious site for Inca leaders.
There are a variety of options for getting there, from the Classic Inca Trail, the Inca Jungle
Trek, the Salkantay Trek, to taking the train. Machu Picchu is a definite must do. For more
information see our page on Machu Picchu (Pg. 44).

Cusco is more than just Machu Picchu. Go on a tour to the famous Rainbow Mountain and
see the breathtaking colours of this enormous mountain located a few hours from Cusco.

The nightlife in Cusco is excellent and it is renowned as the craziest place to party in Peru.
There are bars, restaurants and clubs all situated within and around Plaza de Armas just a
walk away from most hostels.

MUST SEE IN CUSCO:

• See all the crafts and produce at the Pisac market.
• Discover the historic city filled with a mixture of Incan and Spanish influences.
• Gaze at the stars at the Cusco Planetarium.
Walking through the city’s cobbled streets, there are Incan buildings and colonial style
structures everywhere just waiting to be discovered. Alternatively, you could simply just take
a walk around the beautiful neighboring area of San Blas or head to one of the miradors for a
picturesque view of Cusco.
If you have time, take a trip to San Pedro Market to see how day to day life is in Cusco. Here you
won’t find handicrafts or lots of souvenirs but it is a bustling hive of activity for the local Peruvians.
For a full day exploring you can head down to Pisac over the mountains in the Sacred Valley
and see all the products being sold at the local market. Don’t forget to haggle for the prices as
they tend to begin with a higher price.

44
CUSCO SAFETY TIPS:
• Cusco is 3,400m above sea level so altitude sickness can take its toll. Arrive in time to acclimatize
before undertaking any trips and also get altitude sickness pills from the local pharmacies.
Another remedy worth nothing would be chewing on the local coca leaves to help.
• Pack for all types of weather…in Cusco it’s normal to have rain and sunshine at the same time!
• Choose your trekking agency carefully. Shop around and ask lots of questions.
• Be careful using ATM outlets and avoid using them at night if possible.
• Be aware of pickpockets and NEVER take your passport or credit card anywhere unless
100% necessary.

MACHU PICCHU
Machu Picchu, considered one of the 7 New World Wonders, is the most famous
tourist attraction in Peru. A 550-year old citadel built close to Cusco in a spectacular
setting nestled between Andean peaks. The Inca citadel belongs to that exclusive little
club of true global icons, standing alongside the likes of The Great Wall of China and
the Taj Mahal as a symbol of wonder and beauty. Cusco is packed full of tour operators
and tour agencies offering every type of package to visit the Inca ruins. Controls and
restrictions on these agencies are non-existent and the quality of many are extremely
inconsistent. We recommend FindLocalTrips for operators you can trust.

Peruvian Immigrations
If you already know that you have overstayed your visa in Peru, please visit the immigrations
office in Cusco.
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make sure you have NOT overstayed your visa in Peru. If you
have overstayed your visa, you will need to pay a fine. The bus CANNOT wait for people who have
to go back to Yunguyo (nearby village) to pay this fine. It is not fair on the other passengers if we
are delayed and possibly miss the boat trip to Isla del Sol because one passenger forgot to check
their Peruvian Immigration status.

Bus on the Bolivia side

NOTE: Buses on the Bolivian side are smaller and do NOT include onboard toilet.
A HOPThe route from Copacabana to La Paz requires a LAKE CROSSING at the STRAIT OF TIQUINA.
- All passengers must take a small public passenger boat across the lake (included in your pass).
- The bus must float across on a specially built transport raft.
For this reason all buses operating this route are restricted
in size and weight. NO COMPANY operating this route
has an onboard toilet due to these size restrictions.

COPACABANA COPACABANA
A small enchanting town on the edge of Lake Titicaca on the Bolivian side. It is known
as the gateway to Isla del Sol which, according to myth, is the birthplace of the Sun
and the first Incas. Enjoy the stunning view from El Calvario or visit the famous church
Virgen de Copacabana, an important site for South American religious pilgrims.

ISLA DEL SOL

Join us on our private Bolivia Hop boat to Isla del Sol. The round trip lasts approx.
4hrs and costs $10USD (the boat ride can be purchased on the bus). You will
be dropped off by the Pilcokaina Inca Temple from where you have an hour walk
passing by the best southern viewpoint on the way to the port of Yumani. This port
is famous for an ancient Incan stairway and water fountains that still run to this day.
NOTE: this is a private boat trip and NOT a guided tour.
Public boats from Copacabana take 2hrs. to make the crossing to the Island. Our faster
twin-engine boat does it in 70 mins.

IMPORTANT!
- The boat MUST leave on time! Please DO NOT BE LATE or the boat may leave without you. Those
arriving from Peru remember that Bolivia is +1 hour time difference.
- The trail can easily be completed in 40 minutes. You have over 1 hour but do not take too long at the
sun temple or viewpoint (10 minutes at each).
- The trek is done at over 3,800m. Don’t fancy the walk? Just remain on the boat to Yumani where you
can visit the island town, have a lakeside drink and wait until the rest catch up to join you.

NOTE: None of the extra tours are operated by Bolivia Hop – we work with the local communities. Our
partner operators are NOT the cheapest NOR the most expensive. We work with these operators as they
are safe, reliable and give the best value for money based on our years of experience trying all operators.

BOAT TRIP TO ISLAND OF THE SUN

TRAIL DIRECTIONS
The viewpoint is the highest point of the trail and a great place to take photos of the southern view
over the lake towards Isla de la Luna (Moon island) with the snow - capped mountain range of the
Cordillera Real rising up in the background.
Passing the viewpoint the levels off and you can see the port of Yumani from where the boat will
depart down below you to the right.
Once you start to pass the first houses of the village of Yumani and the path doubles back on itself.
Follow the sign for the INKA FOUNTAIN... ->¨CAMINO A LA FUENTE DEL INCA¨
1. TAKE THIS FIRST RIGHT and the path leads down to the port. If you go straight and enter the
village then turn back!!
2. Within 20 meters the path splits again:
Take THE LEFT to drop down towards the port passing down the INCA STAIRWAY. Straight on will
still lead to the port but via the donkey trail which is less steep but takes a little more time.

DEATH ROAD
The Yungas Road, A.K.A ‘Death Road’ due to the high death rate of workers during
its construction, is a 69km road connecting La Paz with Coroico village in the Amazon
Rainforest. Surrounded by mountainous terrain and terrifying cliffs, the road stretches
from around 4,650 meters (15,260 ft), before descending to 1,200 meters (3,900 ft) at
Coroico. The drop in altitude means travelers experience both chilly conditions in the
Altiplano highlands and hot humid conditions in the rainforests below.
In the late 1990s the road dubbed “The World’s Most Dangerous Road” was replaced
by a wider road as the principal route linking the towns and it became popular with
some thrill seeking mountain bikers using it as a spectacular day trip from La Paz.
The adrenaline-pumping Death Road tour is suitable for both confident
beginners and expert mountain bikers.

CITY GUIDE
TOURS AND SIGHTSEEING IN LA PAZ:
CAUTION
NEVER
LEAVE BAGS
UNATTENDED.
BE VERY CAREFUL
WITH YOUR
BELONGINGS AT
• Mountain bike the “World’s Most Dangerous Road”, aka Death Road. ALL TIMES.

• Wander around the Witches’ Market (it’s as interesting as it sounds).

• Get the best view of the city riding one of the cable cars.
• Watch the uniquely Bolivian tradition of Cholita Wrestling.
La Paz is a chaotic frentic city that is abuzz all of the time. Explore the bustling markets and
chat to the countless street vendors or enjoy the view from inside one of the cable cars.
Admire the marvelous San Francisco Cathedral, or just walk around the colonial plazas and
colourful streets. If by any chance you’re looking for a potion or spell to give you good luck,
earn more money, spice up your love life or just want to visit a very unique place, have a stroll
through the Witches Market. Here you’ll find everything related to witchcraft, including rituals,
spell boxes, totems, and much more.
If you’re into Wrestlemania, then you definitely can’t miss out on the Cholita Wrestling. High-
flying indigenous Bolivian women fighting it out makes for an unforgettable event, these
ladies put on a great show.
The main visitor activity in La Paz is a one-day mountain biking trip on ‘Death Road’. Known for
its windy cliff tops and once considered the world’s most dangerous road, the road covers around
61km from La Paz to the jungle village of Coroico. Don’t let the name scare you though, the road
has been made much safer and traffic has been stopped in certain areas to avoid accidents.
Remember to ask for your “I survived the Death Road” free t-shirt at the end of the tour!

MUST SEE IN LA PAZ:

• Walk through Jaen Street and go into 5 of La Paz’s most interesting museums.
• Visit the Cementerio General (cemetery) where you’ll learn about the Bolivian traditions for
mourning the dead.
• View the whole city from various viewpoints in El Alto.

LA PAZ SAFETY TIPS:

• Be careful using ATM outlets and avoid using them at night when possible.
• Carry small change – many taxis/small shops don’t have change for large notes or will to
try to return you fake notes, so try to carry and keep small notes/coins
• Be aware of pickpockets and NEVER take your passport or credit card anywhere unless
100% necessary.
• Bring sunblock and a hat, but also bring thermals and warm clothes as temperatures can
get very cold due to La Paz’s high altitude.

SALAR DE UYUNI
Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is considered one of the most remarkable landscapes in all of
South America, if not the entire world. Stretching more than 10,582 square kilometers
(4,050 square miles) of the Altiplano (a high plateau in the south of Bolivia) it is the
world’s largest salt flats, formed by evaporated prehistoric lakes.
The salt flats are Bolivia’s most popular attraction and visitors indulge in tours of the
area that include the nearby volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and high-altitude lakes.
One and three day tours are most common.
The huge flat surface is famous around the world and truly has to be seen to be appreciated.
