Top 100 NEC Codes for Residential Wiring - Cheat Sheet

General Wiring Requirements


- 110.3(B) - Equipment must be installed per manufacturer instructions.
- 110.12(A) - Workmanship must be neat and free from damage.
- 110.14(A) - Conductors must be properly terminated using approved methods.
- 110.26(A) - 3' clearance in front of electrical panels.
- 110.26(D) - Lighting required in panelboard working space.
- 300.4(D) - Protection plates required if cables are <1¼" from stud face.
- 300.5 - Minimum burial depths for underground wiring.
- 300.14 - 6" free conductor length in boxes.
- 300.15 - All splices must be in a junction box.
- 300.17 - Fill capacity of raceways must not be exceeded.

Boxes and Fittings


- 314.16(A) - Box fill calculations based on wire size and device count.
- 314.27(A) - Boxes supporting ceiling fans must be rated for fan support.
- 314.23(B) - Boxes must be securely fastened.
- 314.20 - Boxes must be flush with finished surface (±¼").
- 314.21 - Boxes must be accessible; no covering by drywall, etc.

Grounding and Bonding


- 250.50 - All grounding electrodes must be bonded together.
- 250.52(A)(3) - Ground rods must be 8' long and fully driven.
- 250.53(G) - Ground rods must be at least 6' apart.
- 250.64(E) - Grounding electrode conductors must be protected.
- 250.104(A) - Metal water pipes must be bonded.
