Hi Jordan
We're still on holiday in China, and at the moment we're staying in Xi'an. Today we've just got
back from an exhausting, and quite terrifying, day trip to Mount Hua. On the bus this morning
1
our guide announced / warned us that the mountain path we would walk was very steep. He
didn't 2mention / propose that at one point it would involve going along wooden planks less
than half a metre wide, with a sheer drop on one side!

There was no other means for / of getting to the end of our walk, so we had to go along the
4
planks, and admittedly walkers are attached to a safety line. But it's a ferociously /
compulsively steep drop, and you feel as if every step could be your last. It didn't help at all
when another walker remarked with a grin that anyone who was unattached and fell would
plunge several hundred metres to their death!
Anyway, much to my surprise, I made it across OK, and I have to 5admit / confirm that I feel
pretty pleased about that. I can certainly 7boast / concede that I've done one of the scariest
7
walks on the planet now, but I deny / doubt that I'll ever do something like that again.
Tomorrow we're doing something a lot safer. We're going to see some amazing ancient tombs
at Hang Yang Ling. I'm really excited about that.

Reading
9 Read about Naomi Uemura and match gaps 1–5 with paragraphs A–F. There is one extra paragraph.
Naomi Uemura, the man who walked alone
It's difficult to think of any twentieth century adventurer who took as many risks as Naomi Uemura, let alone someone who
faced those risks alone. Uemura completed epic journeys and climbed Earth's most challenging mountains alone. It was
something that shaped – and ultimately ended – his life.
1____
It was his shyness that indirectly led to this destiny. Uemura was taken on a climbing trip by a teacher and later decided to
take up the sport as a way of gaining more confidence. He quickly developed his skills and conquered more and more
difficult peaks. Then he walked the length of Japan – all 2,800 kilometres.
2____
With such difficult peaks conquered – usually alone – Uemura was ready to tackle Everest. He reached the summit in
1970, becoming the first person to leave the Japanese flag at the top. When later asked about the trip, Uemura was
typically self-effacing, pointing out that this time he was only part of a team.
3____
Two years later, Uemura attempted to reach the North Pole by dog sled too. The journey was painfully slow because of all
the ridges and cracks in the sea ice. Uemura recorded every stage using a special camera produced for him by National
Geographic Magazine. One night a polar bear broke into his camp – something which could easily have resulted in
Uemura being killed. On another occasion, the ice around him broke, leaving Uemura and his dogs to spend all night on an
island of ice, surrounded by water. Uemura eventually used a small bridge of ice to cross the water, but he later admitted
that he'd thought he would die.
It took Uemura 57 days to reach the North Pole, but he finally arrived on April 29th 1978. His achievement was reported in
the media worldwide, making him an international celebrity. Back home, Uemura was also well known for his books –
accounts of his adventures which are still read avidly by people in Japan today.
At the height of his fame, Uemura announced that he wanted to climb Mount Denali alone again: this time in winter. It was
a very dangerous thing to attempt. Mount Denali is frequently hit by terrible winter storms, when temperatures of minus fifty
centigrade and ferocious winds make it impossible to move.
4____
One of Uemura's preparations involved tying bamboo poles to his shoulders. The poles extended behind and in front of
him, and Uemura hoped that they would form a kind of bridge, stopping him from falling into any crevasse.
Setting off in February 1984, Uemura reached the 6,000 metre summit of Mount Denali on his 43rd birthday. The next day,
people reported seeing him from a light aircraft, his bright red jacket standing out against the snow. Then a storm closed
in, and nobody saw him again.
5____
Uemura's death was a terrible blow in Japan, where he was a hugely popular figure. To honour his achievements, the
Naomi Uemura Memorial Museum was built in Tokyo – a light, bright building where you can learn all about his
expeditions.
Four years after Uemura's disappearance, Vernon Tajas became the first person to scale Mount Denali in winter, and
return. He explained how one day on the mountain, sheltering in an ice cave, he felt Uemura's spirit beside him – so Tajas
said 'hello' in Japanese.
Solutions Third Edition Advanced Tests 6 Unit 5 Progress Test B
A After climbing the toughest mountains that Japan had to offer, Uemura started going on expeditions abroad. By
his mid-twenties, he had already climbed many of the world's highest and most challenging mountains, like the
Matterhorn, in Switzerland and Mount Denali in Alaska.
B Alone with the dogs on the ice, coping with both the extreme climate and the sheer loneliness, he was probably
very grateful to be visited by Ira Block, a national Geographic photographer who flew in several times during the
trip. And when he finally reached the North Pole, Block was there to record his historic achievement.
C In addition to such weather, deep cracks called crevasses lie hidden under fresh winter snow on the mountain.
These can suddenly open under a climber's feet, plunging them to their death. But despite these dangers,
Uemura was confident because he had prepared well.
D Uemura followed up his conquest of the world's highest mountain with a journey he later described as 'pure bliss'.
For two months he rafted alone down the length of the Amazon, a journey of 6,000 kilometres. He followed this in
1976 by travelling 12,000 kilometres by dog sled from Greenland to Alaska, setting a record for the longest dog
sled journey which still stands today.
E The chances are that Uemura tried to find shelter from the storm. But perhaps he was blown off the mountain, or
his bamboo poles failed to save him from a crevasse. In all probability we'll never know. After the storm cleared,
teams of climbers searched for days. They managed to find some of his equipment, but Uemura's body was
never located.
F Uemura was born in 1941 in Hidaka, Japan. He grew up in a country which had been devastated by war and
occupied by foreign troops. He was shy as a young boy, and nothing about him suggested that he would become
a famous explorer one day.
