Discussing New So class, why is choosing the right

Concepts and Practicing words important when inviting
(Student answer may Vary)
New Skills #2 different people to an event?
Very Good! What else?
(Student answer may Vary)

Very Good! Now lets learn together

about Diction and style.
Diction means the choice and use of
Proper Discussion
words in speech or writing.
It helps us communicate clearly and
appropriately depending on our
audience and purpose.
For example, class: When inviting
guests to Dora’s birthday party,
should we use the same words for
our friends and our teachers?
No ma’am

That’s right! We must choose our

words carefully depending on who we
are talking to. This is where Formal
and Informal Diction comes in.

FORMAL DICTION (Professional &

Serious Tone)
Definition: Uses sophisticated,
professional, and respectful
language. It follows proper grammar,
avoids contractions, and does not
include slang or casual expressions.
Example: Dora is inviting her teacher
to her birthday party. She needs to
use formal words because her
teacher is an adult and someone she
respects.
Formal Invitation Example:
"Dear Ma’am/Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I would like
to formally invite you to my birthday
celebration on Friday, at 3:00 PM, at
my house. It would be a great honor
to have you there.

Sincerely,
Dora the Explorer
Formal diction uses:
✅ Complete sentences
✅ Proper grammar and punctuation
✅ A respectful and polite tone

While
Informal Diction (Casual & Friendly
Tone)
Definition: Uses casual,
conversational, and relaxed
language. It may include slang,
contractions, emojis, and expressions
that reflect everyday speech.
Example: Dora is inviting her best
friend Boots. Since they are close,
she can use a friendly and informal
way of speaking.
Informal Invitation Example:
"Hey, Boots! It’s my birthday on
Friday! Come to my house at 3 PM—
we’ll have so much fun! Can’t wait to
see you!"
Informal diction uses:
✅ Friendly and casual words
✅ Shorter sentences
✅ Emojis or exclamation marks for
excitement

Now Class, why does Diction Matter?

Ma’am, It is because if we uses the
wrong words for the wrong
audience, people might not
understand or feel comfortable.

Very Good!
Now, who can give me some
examples about inviting your teacher
using informal? And what will
happen?
Maam! (Student example may vary)
Very good! So that might sound
disrespectful to your teacher because
it’s sounds too casual.

How about you invited Boots using

formal Diction? What will happen?

Ma’am!
Very good! It might sounds too Student example may vary)
serious for a friend.
That is why choosing the right words
is important.
